IKEA Refund Scam with a Big Twist - IT WASN'T A SCAM!

I purchased some items from my local IKEA back in mid December. A month later I received a number of text messages claiming to be from IKEA telling me that I was due a refund and to call a number to receive it. I was skeptical as I hadn't returned any items.
I called the number to see the scam through and in this video I reveal what happened and why it wasn't all that it seemed. In fact, IT WASN'T A SCAM!

In America we would report something like this to our state Attorney General office. Something is definitely amiss here, as the store would have your card number in their database for a refund. Also, why would the store contact someone to issue a refund? If this happened to me I believe I would report it so that it could be on file. If others had reported similar incident, they may wish to start an investigation into this. This sounds like an old con with a new twist. Offering someone a refund that was not due them to play on their greed. As always, great video Jake.

I had a similar situation with Nespresso. They wanted my card details over the phone and I said no. Turns out it was legitimate but I get those calls a lot. Can't be too careful these days to be fair xD

they do normal ask for the long card number and expiry to know which card to refund on. the one way you can tell its a fraudulent text number, is that A. it comes up with No additional texts, like you shown there that text came up on the same feed as your confirmation text to say your items were available for collection. B. they will not know your name or address. But you still did the right thing by being over cautious.

They should only ask for the last 4 digits to confirm the card. Scammers can easily get people's details from different sources including hacked websites

Thanks for the vid Roger, good to know , although are you aware that sometimes simply dialling these numbers is the scam ( call centre in Cayman islands £50 a minute ) so if you KNOW you don't need a refund just simply delete the texts.

It whould be a lot better handled if they asked you to do the claim through a genuin form at Ikea webpage. But it's also easy to spoof a Web page too. Here in Sweden Ikea also call if someone has a complain, and it happens that they ask for bank account for refund. The best rule is to never trust if you have not asked for it. It's even possible to get scammed through services that should prevent scam. In Sweden we got bank id and mobile bank id. Some call eldery people and do scam by asking them qustions and logging in to accounts and stealing money. But they have secured it a lot with QR codes etc.

You cannot be too careful. If you end up upsetting some poor operative then so be it, they will just have to grow a thicker skin. Much better than having your account emptied. Bob

Definitely, a lot of red flags to justify your skepticism. Definitely some bad decisions in light of the current threatscape with wanting the card number over the phone.

If I ever get any messages, similar to this I call a publicised number for the specific company, and not the one in the message, if it’s genuine they will get you through to the right place at some point, and if it’s a scam they now know about that one too.

Over Christmas, I sent off for a 10.5 inch Samsung tablet but the company in question sent me a 7 inch Alcatel tablet instead. I bought it via the Amazon website and sent an email to the company through the Amazon email system. I got no reply so I requested a refund from Amazon which I got very quickly.

I got a call claiming to be from the Department of Work and Pensions saying they thought I might be due an increase on my disability benefit and a corresponding back payment. I played along for a while, as being an ex-Law lecturer I can have fun with scammers over fine legal points, and answered a range of questions until the guy said "thanks, that's all I need, we will send you a letter" and the call ended. But he hadn't asked me for any financial details. A week later I received a letter telling me that I had indeed been awarded an increase and back payment, of for me quite a lot of money, and the call had actually been genuine. As anybody familiar with the UK benefits system and the DWP knows this is a very, very unusual occurrence!

As a rule of thumb, it's probably not a scam if you've had to wait at least 10-15 minutes to speak to a human followed by 2 or 3 call forwarding to "different" departments. (departments being Larry on the desk opposite)

Why did they send you a text instead of phoning you. The problem seems to be their system because that sort of txt message is what scammers send. Sounds like they really need to sort their systems out. They should have given you a voucher gift for the error and wasting your time. They may have known your name but scammers can get that info from a hacked website database

How would phoning be any more secure? you can spoof caller ID. The exact same problem would exist. Their main flaw is not using the main phone number and linking to the official "contact us" page from the text, so the customer knows they are using the genuine number from the genuine website.

Quite right too! Asking for your card number to be 'beep - bopped' into your phone is sooo 1990's. I just wouldn't do this today either. Well done. It is IKEA who need to change this. Stay safe n' sensible. :)

Some banks have savings accounts where you can have people paying in, but they can't use that accounts number to take money out.

Have you checked your bank statement for a duplicate charge because they duplicated your order by accident? I've had that happen.

Interesting. If I receive an unexpected text or call, then the first thing I do is search for the number first via a search engine. If nothing comes up, like yourself, then I would call the number on the suppliers website. You’re correct to be cautious in this day and age and I would have done the same so well done that man. Ahh yes but it did all scream “scam” initially, didn’t it? Asking you to input your debit card number on your phone etc for a refund that you knew you hadn’t done. In Birmingham. In this day and age with scammers becoming more sophisticated, you have to keep your wits about and it’s better to be cautious. Right, I’m off to give a stranger my American Express card number to pay for processing fees to claim my lottery win...in Kansas that I never entered. 😉

To be honest I think Ikea is a scam as a whole because they to often use the cheapest materials but coat it in think in a plasic skin that hides the truth.

What happened to the good old days when the company would send you a cheque and then all you had to worry about was the people in the postal service who stole the cheques. They were quite clever and the crooks who did it got to recognise the envelopes that contained cheques. It cost the tax man ~ that is us ~ when I had over £8000 stolen in refunds before I finally got the cheque. I occasionally get people who claim they are either in the army and want me to process some money for them and I will get a commission of many millions of dollars. Or someone who works in a bank and wants to give me Millions of pounds.

If it’s came through on exactly the same number as your order confirmation then how can it be a scam. I know you can mask email addresses but physical numbers I don’t think can be done. My wife had it recently with T Mobile but it came from a different number to all the usual communication so sticks out like a saw thumb .

It makes complete sense why you believed that was a scam. The refund could have been made to the card made for the purchase and i fail to see why that card number needed repeating to make that refund transaction.

Relevant Information missing from this video : the guy's accent. I would not buy from IKEA anyway. Stores are one of the Circles of Hell, making you walk in convolution to pass every item on sale in the hope you will buy on impulse. Duchess nearly fainted with claustrophobia induced by the barriers they place to your finding the exit. In retrospect I wish we had simply used a fire door to get out.

It sounded like a scam to me too, you never give any personal info or data to someone do don't know. I buy from IKEA but if you google IKEA complaints there are a lot of them and they run the gamut of issues. Even with the number of complaints about IKEA, very little to nothing has changed so I don't expect them to learn from this either. I do agree with some of the other comments that this might have been an internal employee scam attempt.

A classic scam. Set up a KZbin channel, get 60k subs by making videos about scams to make yourself look legit then make a video about how a fake Ikea refund scam is actually legit. You forgot one detail though. When I rang the number the voice answered "Hello there". Nice try Dr Scammer.
