I've been using a Jarvfjallet every day for the past two years to WFH and I think it's great. My chair does not have any noises and feels comfortable enough. Much better than any other Ikea chair I've trying or owned before. I think eventually I would like to upgrade to a higher end chair (like the Aeron) but for now this chair is working great for me.

I am 1,74 cm - 70 kg, a bit thiner..and purchased one slightly used Jarvfjallet for 100€, I have the same tailbone problems as some people mention here, but I used a "coccyx pillow or cushion" so it really got better... Before this, I had the Markus for 2 years and I think it was more comfortable than this one, but I still had to use that pillow... Also, it got even better when I went to the gym and did back exercises and buffed up my back muscles a bit and improved my overall posture, so, I guess this counts as a tip too :))

Those casters need to fit the European norm EN 12529:1998, that's why they are working this way. Ikea must go by this norm to be able to sell their office chairs in Europe to business and government clients

Bought Jarvfjallet a month ago, I do not have that squealing sound but a creaking sound from a lumbar support which is annoying. I hate armrests not for being hard plastic but for loose feel and play in every director. Also there is a slight play in a seat due to that seat depth adjustment, though it isn't noticeable while sitting. And casters... I'm kinda got used to them.

only thing i really don’t like about this is the hard armrests. I’d happily pay a bit more for softer armrests and it would make for a really great chair for that price, if it’s as solid and reliable as the markus which i’ve been using for years, and it seems it is. The armrests is the only thing I hate about the markus. they should make a 2nd gen with better, less intrusive armrests. anyway jarvfjallet would probably be my next chair and maybe i’ll buy some cushions for the armrests

I just bought this chair a few days ago because I was having lower back pain! I was using a used Humanscale Task chair (no headrest or arms) which was creaking and annoying as it had no back support as it just would push back fully before it gave any resistance and could not be tightened or locked, then it actually snapped at he front base which i jimmied up with a plank and a ziptie... So i hope the Jarvfjallet does the trick. so far so good apart from the Armrests being hard and too small (they could be about half as long again (say 30cm long) at the back so they work when you use in the reclined position in my opinion) I might try the Humanscale castors on this thing if these start to annoy me (on carpet) EDIT: Humscale castors are a larger diameter rod so do not fit.

I have a first generation Jarvfjallet, and in short its a dissapointment (after owning it 2 years now, WFH) which is such a shame as I love IKEA and my old Markus. The overall chair is fantastic, build quality and the back support is brilliant (pretty much what you expect from IKEA) BUT I 'upgraded' from the Markus (as I wore it out) and beyond the back support being better, the overall chair is worse. The seat cushion is incredibly thin compared to the Markus and wears out within days/weeks of owning it meaning your arse hurts within an hour of being sat on it (big-ish bloke), and whats worse is that getting up and walking around to take a break doesn't resolve the discomfort. The second point is on the arm rests, them being solid plastic has caused long term elbow pain, even after removing the arm rests entirely. Them being solid and thin width plastic is incredibly uncomfortable. Such a shame as the Markus was an absolutely fantastic chair in every way, its replacement however is not.

I read the reason why they made the seat cusion padding firm compared to the Markus was because they were getting a lot of returns on the Markus due to the foam wearing out quickly. Also the adjustable arm rests on this are significantly better than the arm rests on the Markus.

Owned the 1st gen Jarvfjallet (with the non-adjustible armrests) for about a year. For reference, I'm 6'2" and around 180lbs. Other than the fixed armrests being useless for me, which the 2nd generation obviously fixes somewhat, I also found the seat cushioning to be a bit too firm, and it definitely bottomed out in the tailbone region after a few hours of use. This made the chair a pain for me, especially for a whole day of use. Also, the proportions are a bit weird I think - the minimum seat height seemed to be a bit on the high side, and yet the seat depth is a bit on the low side (which I did mind, as I think it contributed to tailbone pressure problems), and the fact that it slides out doesn't help enough (again, tailbone pressure!). I'm not sure what height people would be best served by this. On the other hand: overall stability, the headrest and lumbar cushion, the backrest, the adjustability, and the fact that the seatpad fabric can be easily removed with a zipper - which made adding some extra cushion foam, at the critical tailbone region, a relative breeze - are all pluses. It's not a terrible chair, but the tailbone pains on that seatpad are no joke. I'd definitely caution anyone in my weight range to try it out IRL, ideally for a couple hours, before purchasing. (In other news, I replaced the Jarvfjallet with a Secretlab Titan XL 2022, fabric version. Nearly double the price maybe, but none of the issues, and *lots* more comfort and flexibility.)
@JellyLancelot

I had the EXACT same issue over the same time frames, thus now hunting for a replacement haha such a shame as everything else is fantastic about the chair, just the seat cushion is such a huge downgrade from the Markus and makes it painful to sit on for extended time periods, even getting up and walking around DOESN’T solve the issue. The arm rests on the 1st gen also caused me severe elbow pain and I took them off. They are hard plastic and terrible, again massive downgrade over the Markus.

I have used the markus, I cannot in good concious reccomend anyone buy a mesh chair for over 100-150 because of the poor quality and short life of a year or two before sagging. Your chair should last you years if you are spending hundreds on it. Unfortunately the markus has low quality mesh and the back sinks to the point of almost zero support unless reclining. If you have back problems, the markus as well as this similarly designed chair will really do you a diservice after a year or so. When you are approaching $300, buy fabric 100% your back will thank you

Please do some basic research before you claim or say you’re surprised that parts of this chair are real leather. A quick look at Ikea’s product details section for this chair states that this is NOT REAL LEATHER. It specifies that these parts are PU leather, which is the absolute worst material for chairs and a lot of other things. They will start flaking in no time. We’ve owned several different PU leather chairs and they were a complete waste of money. Do yourselves a favor and only purchase fabric office/gaming/lounge/sofa (or any kind) chairs. I’m not a 100% sure but I don’t think IKEA even sells products that are real leather. We do love the light and uniform color of this chair though. However, IKEA hiked the price for this chair up by $80 in just 6 months, which is insane! It now costs $369.

Ikea, rule of thumb, never buy a bed, a chair or couch from them, I speak of experience. I once, way back in the days had a bed which was well, cheap. A set of chairs that well felt like sitting on a bunch of rocks, and of cause the couch or dear where to start. So yes the office chair is also not ideal, at least not for $300. Its like those "Gaming-Racing" chairs for $499 with ERGONOMIC back support, its all bs. Go with a Herman Miller chair if you want quality for a bit more, but you have no issues afterwards.
