@@lurs21 all things are relative. if you want a decent mid level guitar the made in mexico fender standards are a good, versatile workhorse option. and yes, they currently are more expensive than they used to be, thanks fender. of course it does cost more than an entry level squier, but it is much less than a custom shop fender, so relative. anything much cheaper will probably be made overseas in asia. in the context of the video i think i made the comment i did because it is the cheapest way of attaining a playable iconic guitar (strat, tele) compared to the thousands it costs for a les paul or es335, rickenbacker etc. i used cheap to mean good value for money rather than meaning available for pennies. merry christmas, i hope like in a christmas carol with scrooge and bob cratchet, your boss gives you a raise and you can get your dream guitar.

Fender Telecasters are also super cool, I’ve never owned one but any time I get ahold of one, they’re a blast. Honestly, just go to a store and try some out. I have a couple and even though they are nice, they are also very limited as to what they can do. The guy shows it at the end of the video when the song becomes heavier. They are very good as rhythm or second guitars, not very nice for leading as they lack sustain and gain (even using high gain pickups, compared to a Fender or Gibson as an example).

I've watched the video like 10 times back now: my review. Les Paul sounds so warm and full. Good example of why the Les Paul is often the benchmark guitar. If there is one criticism it is that the LP seems to lack the clarity of some of the other guitars have but it is very versatile. How much clarity you want is also a matte of taste and style. The Stratocaster has a very distinct sound that is clear, chimey, and higher than most of the others but I consistently liked it less to be honest. That chimey aspect just didn't appeal to me. That said; a lot of songs are best played on a Stratocaster. Hello Nirvana. The PRS something seemed off about. In isolation it didn't sound bad but it didn't sound good either and seemed upstaged in every category by 2 or 3 other guitars. Did the best with the gain. The Ernie Ball was really impressive to me. It has such a rich tone, great clarity, but also versatility. It made the PRS look bad every time. Maybe the PRS just sounded off because it was followed up by the Ernie Ball. Also I would have been really interested to hear the SG compared to the Ernie Ball and LP; something about the Ernie Ball was reminding me of the SG and it might have been that it sounded like a clearer LP but I don't remember the SG sounding so rich. The Rickenbacker was both brighter and warmer than the Stratocaster and even though it wasn't quite as clear it lacked that chimeyness which made me like it better than the Strat pretty consistently. Also has a distinct beautiful higher tone but for that reason strikes me as a guitar that isn't as versatile. Rickenbacker wins the style contest though. Absolute work of art to look at. I'd want one just to mount on my wall even if sounded like shit. The Gretsch was also an all round stunning instrument to listen to. You can really hear that bigger hollow body give it a vague but rich acoustic character and rounded out sound. It didn't seem to particularly lack in versatility either although its character is probably more suited to some styles than others. Super impressive overall and I wish I could think of more to write about it. Wish it wasn't so expensive. I'm going to group the Ibanez and Jackson because this test was poor for them for the same reason. These both shine as metals guitars and I think this video shows why. They don't have much if any character of their own so in a test that mostly relied on their built in tone and characters they seemed very lackluster, flat, and boring. But they both have a lot of clarity and easy to work low action fret boards suited to the high distortion and settings in most metal music. If the style of music the guitar is meant for is very mods and settings heavy that clarity is important and the lack of character isn't an issue because it is given character that way instead. And for something like power metal they will probably sound much better actually. That is why both of them only started to not sound hilariously bad by comparison until the very end when there was more box settings to give them something other than flat boring clarity. Best Overall Performers: Les Paul, Ernie Ball, Grestch Niche sounding guitars: Rickenbacker, Stratocaster Other Niche: Ibanez & Jackson IDK what to think: PRS My Personal Fav: Ernie Ball Music Man Axis (Ernie my man why you gotta be $3,000?) I kinda wish there was a video just like this but with lower price point guitars and not models that mostly cost $3,000+ so it could help inform my buying decisions better. Also wish an SG was included in this test and as Gibson's best selling guitar it probably should be.

I was actually surprised by the clarity and brightness of the Jackson in the clean picking part. Sure it didn't have much "character," but it was clean like a humbucker while being bright like a single coil. I agree with the assessment of the EB, but the bridge pickup with distortion sounded cheap and weak.

Not that versatile. I own a g5120 sunburst. Great guitar, but trying to play on the higher frets is a pain in the ass compared to something like a strat or RG. They are also a pain to setup well (you have to sand the bridge to perfection or it will move on hard bends), and it's very easy to damage the jack input wiring, but it's very hard to change it (when compared to something like a strat). Upgraded to a roller bridge just for the looks, but it might have made it a little bit more tune stable when using the bigsby (maybe it's just in my head). They also develop cracks around the jack. I've installed a long socket and a jackplate and it looks like it fixed the problem. In my opinion it's one of those guitars that you either love or hate. Mine may have all those flaws, but when I plug it to the amp... Damn, does it sound good.

There are two types of 'shootout's that make sense in comparing guitars somewhat fairly - this is one of them. Question 1: What do they sound like when we play them as much the same as possible through the same settings on the same amp. That's what we have here. Useful. Question 2: Since each guitar has multiple differing characteristics from each other that will inspire different playing techniques and styles - even implying the need for different amps - What is the sonic and physical differences when we play them as they tend to be best at. Accepting that we can really use any instrument any way we want to, they really do have different areas where they tend to shine more here or there. Also useful, but in a different way. Between the two comparisons, a player can get a really good idea of what guitars might suit them more for different ways of playing.

@carlcushmanhybels81595 жыл бұрын
Agree. Strat's can have a thin -if expressive- sound, so i like having other, 'fatter'/ rounder sounding guitars in the mix (as here) to balance it. Agree the Ibanez does great with overdriven tones. He didn't show the clear round mellow or 'jazzy' tones the Les Paul can notably do much better than a Strat. But for clean Rock wailing, the Strat has long been preferred and notable.
