Back in WW2OL I used to infiltrate enemy airfields with an antitank rifle and fire a single shot into oil pans right as planes would start their engines (muffled the sound). They'd take off just fine and usually wouldn't notice the leak until they were over our territory, and by then it was too late and their engines would suddenly burn out. I called this "the quivering palm" technique.

@ Bismark, can you adjust the fuel mixture to the engines in IL-2? What Bo was observing on the gauges before engine 2 stopped was typical of a fuel mixture that is too lean. The engine will run too hot and eventually lose power or seize up. If the fuel mixture is too rich the fuel isn't burning efficiently so unburnt fuel will carbonize on the cylinder head until ignition ceases. Both situations are terminal if you lose the engine. What you want to train Bo to do is watch the fuel temp gauge and feed back to you when it falls (too rich) or rises (too lean) sharply. I wondered with you guys diving through low altitudes ranges in cold temp conditions if that is playing havoc on your engines because the O2 levels are richer in the colder dense air on the Russian front.
