In War Thunder I was playing as a B-29 bomber and I've lost part of my right wing but I still managed to successfully complete the mission I only had three engines though I couldn't turn left because I had a hold left just to stay up but I also had some support with another B-29 who put part of his left wing under my right wing to help keep me up because him and I were the only two left idk how him and I survived 8 bf-109s but we did it

The majority of bomber losses irl were due to engine damage, or pilot hits, not structural failure. The reality of heavy bombers is that they still hold together with entire chunks blown out of tails, fuselage, even the wings. Go watch documentaries where pilots, German or otherwise, talk about how they approach a bomber. They target engines, pilots, and gunners, they don't try to saw through the entire thing. I'm sure you could saw a B-17 tail off with 30mm cannons, but you'll expend a lot more ammo than if you just put a burst into the engines. And that ammo is needed when the B-17 formation is 50 planes not 5.

The only times I remember seeing footage of a B-17 losing its tail, was because of friendly fire via dropping bombs. It went out of formation. Mind you, I’ve seen tons of footage, and listened to many stories at the VFW years ago in 2004 before the greatest generation began to dwindle. The craziest thing they ever saw was a german plane ramming them, unexploded flak in the wing, a giant hole in the left wing (heh) and two B-17’s colliding. In war thunder, it can be brought down by simple 7.7’s. Like so much for those big steel beams everywhere, huh....

Even Japanese .50s can do that shit, as well as at a level flight engagement. You didn't seem to get my point which was that the damage modeling is ass in the game, and especially with bombers.

First time playing Bombers in WT, but big fan of the B17 and it’s history. What I learned in game that mimics real life - the formation is your life. Break formation, you die. Formation flying is HARD, especially during turns with different models of aircraft. If you get to the target, the bombing run itself is pretty anticlimactic if there is no flak. Also, 30s are relatively useless against German aircraft, 50s are your friend. And finally, Bo is a total WT aviation wizard, turn fighting Zeros in a B17. Kids, DONT try this at home! Lol. Hope y’all have as much fun watching as we did making it!

Never reduce your engines unless you are dropping bombs. You need all the speed you can to climb and run from fighters. And always climb. A bomber only has 1 true defense: distance. Always try to make a fighter stall to climb to you, or keep them behind you so you have the max amount of gunners facing them. If needed, turn away and run while climbing. And keep your bomb bay closed. If you leave it open, it creates more drag and slows you down.

My friends and I love playing bombers. We found that the B-17 by itself is very easy prey, but the 3 of us combined were nearly unstoppable. One match we had 9 kills between us. People just couldn't resist 3 bombers flying in formation close to each other, that's like 3 easy kills.
