I wonder how close this is to the banter of actual combat pilots during that time. They were all quite young.

Banter wasn't really an option cause you had to keep actively sweeping as much as your neck would allow, occassionally checking on the rest of the planes in formation, checking instruments to make sure sure everything is okay in your aircraft as well as maintaining navigational correctness, so there really isn't time for inane bantering especially when theres a chance the radio chatter will be picked up and homed in on. Most of the flights would be dead quiet with occassional radio check-ins and then when the fight begins thats when everyone will start gettin chatty, with calls for assistance, maydays and maybe some post action battle banter. Its not like the movies in most cases... ^.^
