Honestly, I feel like it's a bit funny that people need such a video. I'm not an old man by any means, but thanks to the good amount of terrain detail (unlike in say, 1946 where the terrain was a mostly a bit too basic yet), navigation in Il-2 is exactly the same as navigation in real life with a paper map and a compass, but even easier because you get to choose your height to look around from - which isn't so quick or easy as a pedestrian. The thing you learn in this vid is basically something you shoulda long been taught in school. What if your phone/GPS device runs outta battery? lol The only challenge there really is about airborne navigation in Il-2 is when you cannot see dry land (either due to being in clouds or over sea)... Or if you don't keep track of where you started from and what rough heading you've been flying from the start. The maps are sizeable, but the irl issue of going off your paper map or whatever is nonexistent. Either way, nice vid.

Before I always heard just advises like watch the landscape to see forests, cities, lakes to orient yourself. I guess that helps too but boy from up there everything looks the same. This video is exactly what I needed!

As a first time player (1 day) I'm very thankful to you for your detailed navigational planning. I wondered how to use the map in the first place, though technical it is very much realistic. I gave it a big thumbs up and I too will adopt this technique once I get a little fly time and better understanding of mapping my joystick out properly. Always the hardest thing to do is get used to the keyboard layout when applying different flight system controls after flying FSX for sometime. Cheers mate! :-)

Stop apologising for yourself, you know your stuff and explain things clearly and concisely. Certainly very helpful for me, having just moved to il2 BoX from RoF (I know, late to the party), but keep doing your thing man. Actually practical and useful.

Hey, my buddies and I are getting the game very soon and the main thing that we want to do is man a huge bomber like the He 111 H6 or something like that. We decided that I was going to be the navigator even though I have no experience with navigating in this game and real life. I appreciate that you made this simplified, beginner guide to navigating. But I was wondering if you would be willing to make another, more in-depth guide? So that I could learn the advanced stuff down to the nitty-gritty.

Shane67000 Hi mate, yes I’ve been thinking of doing that but I just need to find the time. Honestly, the methods shown in this video is all I use despite being a real world pilot. If you plan a flight using an accurate speed and hold a heading you should be able to find everything. Introducing wind drift corrections etc opens a whole other can of worms! Just don’t forget to start your click on each leg ;)

Are IAS and GS the same in IL-2? Usually you have to use your GS to calculate your timing for the legs.
@darbz2k
@darbz2k 5 жыл бұрын
Martin Brehmer No, there is wind in IL2 so the GS and IAS will usually be a little different, but to assume they are the same for simplicity works fine.

Thanks Darbzy, you make it sound so simple. I was expecting to have to dust off the trigonometry I never quite mastered many years ago in high school! While I finish setting up my flight controls I'll look out for a timer of some sort. Apart from an Iphone, what else is commonly used?
@darbz2k

JayGee It’s a piece of cake with a little practice - and very rewarding! I’ve actually started using the cockpit clock as I’m now flying in VR. An digital egg timer would work too ;)
@jaygee5693
@jaygee5693 5 жыл бұрын
@@darbz2k Thanks for the feedback. I'd considered an egg timer, but was thinking of the old analogue twist-to-set type which would have been a bit clumsy. I'll look for a digital one then.

Haha fr I'm no boomer but I find it funny that people need to be taught basic paper map+compass navigation in Il-2 instead of school. Only unorthodox thing about Il-2 nav is the default keybind for map view is O instead of M.

Darbzy Its popular because as you said most new players struggle with navigation I remember when I first started with cliffs and spent hours flying around with no idea where I was...didnt enjoy the game at that point. Luckily the nav in BoX is much friendlier. Maybe if you lowered the gain on the audio you may be able to clean it up a bit? You dont notice these things over ts etc due to extra background noise/poor audio quality over ts.
