Flying Circus - Volume I
From the team that brought you Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War comes a new, re-imagined Great War combat flight-simulator as part of the IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles series. Fly some of WWI’s greatest aircraft in thrilling air to air combat high above the trenches of No Man’s Land. In planes made largely of canvas and wood, dogfight to the death against cunning enemies and see if you have what it takes to become an ACE! Experience what is was like to be an early aviation pioneer and test the tactics and machines that would forever change warfare by bringing it to the skies for the first time. Discover the bravery and courage it took to do battle with no parachute and no radio to call for help! Are you the next Guynemer, Ball, Bishop or von Richtofen?
Flying Circus includes ten legendary WWI combat aircraft that you can fly alone or with friends in single-player or multiplayer scenarios. Flying Circus also comes with a map of the Arras sector of the Western Front in WWI.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Flying Circus - Volume I is part of the IL-2 Great Battles series of products and can be played as a separate stand-alone product or be integrated with other Great Battles titles such as Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Moscow, Battle of Kuban and Battle of Bodenplatte. Right now there are only the two scripted campaigns for the Sopwith Camel and the Fokker Dr.1 in game. Flying Circus II has been anounced though and should feature a dynamic campaign. Other than that one can of course always use Pat Wilson's Campain Generator (PWCG) to generate a single player campaign :)

You ask what the enemy planes are made of. Well, its a much more accurate damage model than that in Rise of Flight. The reality is that rifle calibre bullets against wood & canvas do little damage unless they hit something vital, like the pilot, fuel tank etc. Otherwise they just go through causing nothing more than a hole, easily patched. The Hurricane was able to absorb much more damage than the Spitfire for the same reason with its similar rear fuselage construction. In Rise of Flight the aircraft are far too weak structurally & the airframes fail very unrealistically. Also the flight models of the aircraft are very different & tend to be somewhat harsh in IL2, resulting in stalls that tend to be somewhat unrealistic & occur too easily & incorrectly - particularly in WW2 aircraft which stall at high speed way too often, at least in the versions I've played. And before anyone asks, I have studied aerodynamics & read extensively on aircraft flight characteristics & how & when they depart from normal flight. That said, more videos please!

Interesting stuff. I wonder if the changes were made for 'gaming' reasons?. I wonder if the Camel is easier to control in this than it is in ROF?

Sadly, the wings falling off situation is just as bad (actually, probably worse) in Flying Circus multiplayer...they added an update which introduced damage to wing spars (which aren't actually modelled - the angle of shot gives a certain % chance to "Hit a spar")...the result is that _any_ amount of damage, no matter how small, seems to result in structural weakening, so the usual higher-G manoeuvres that players pull usually end in a wing breaking off after taking minimal damage (Largely seems to affect Entente planes - Central ones are generally tougher with some exceptions). The worst I saw was a Dolphin disintegrating after being hit by a single bullet...you don't tend to notice so much in FC single player as the AI are typically a lot more reserved in their manoeuvring.

There is one major mod for RoF(can´t remember the name right no; didn´t play RoF for ages now) which make the wings much stronger. But it is far from the optimum

While the fuselage and empennage of the Dr.I are mostly empty space, the double box main spar and D-tube actually make up a pretty good fraction of the Dr.I's wing area (about a third). The S.E.5 and Sopwith Camel both have wings that are considerably more "open" when viewed from above. The wings in Rise of Flight are definitely too fragile, but this level of tankiness seems kind of ridiculous.

The Sopwith Triplane was the model between the Pup and the Camel, though it was only equipped by four squadrons of the RNAS.
@tomsbasement4884

The Camel hates turns and rolls to the left due to the rotational force of the spinning engine. It tends to always want to lift the nose when going that direction and reacts slowly due to fighting the effects of the engine spin. When rolling/turning to the right it goes along with the rotational force and reacts much more sharply. Its like a standard screw, Lefty-Loosy Righty-Tighty.
@conmcgrath7502
@conmcgrath7502 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear that. I knew the Camel would 'turn on a sixpence' in one direction for the very reasons you just gave and I was wondering if the 'game model' would reflect those characteristics. As far as I know, it could out-turn the Fokker Triplane on a right turn (I think right turn because you just 'called it'). This is 'hear-say; just something I was told so I have no idea if it is factually true but it makes sense to me? When they were developing the Camel, they experimented moving the engine forwards and backwards through a 10 inch range, doesn't sound like a lot but those inches made huge differences to the 'balance and handling' of the aircraft, they settled on a mid-way point as anything 'further back' made the plane just too skittish? If flown by an expert they could almost spin the aircraft but they could also rip the wings off! So they 'pacified' the handling somewhat to accommodate 'ordinary' pilots. Thanks for the comment, as always, Pax Dude.

Definitely go for the enlarged upper wing window - it'll make keeping track of an opponent in a turn fight quite a bit less frustrating, and a 2kph is next to nothing. Oh - and those are Bristol F2B's not FE2B's.

Your crash landing onto the wings was what they taught RFC pilots to do rather than smash wheels down. The wings crumpled and absorbed a lot of the energy. Wheels down meant to bounce then go over your nose and death as you got crunched into the ground.

"What did they build this out of? Volvo steel?" LOL, absolutely my reaction, too. Most of the hits are going to punch 0.303" holes through the fabric but that was a LOT of hits without any noticeable structural damage. You hosed the Dr.I from directly behind several times - and scored hits - which I would have expected to damage the main spar web and D-tubes. (The Dr.I has a secondary spar, but it's miniscule.)

Would love to see a campaign in this beauty of an aircraft. By the way as a bit of an aircraft nut if I remember correctly The Camel was a challenging plane to pilot, for two reasons. Firstly, the controls were very sensitive by the standards of the time. This gave skilled pilots a lot more ability to achieve impressive maneuvers, but it also meant that small mistakes could have a big effect

Oh yes, they were flying a 'figure-of-eight' pattern at two different levels, I think Taff 'lucked-out/stalled out' at decisive moments and failed to understand a very terminal situation, damn fine escape! Look at this from the other perspective, Taff is saying 'what are these planes made from? Well the two tri-planes that had 'bracketed' you are going' what the 'eff'! Just about to open fire and he stalls the plane and leaves me firing at the ground, the guy approaching from below is going 'sheise' where did he go? as Taff dives past and then gains airspeed, jammy jammy bar'steward. Long might it continue, effing great entertainment, thumbs up every time, you lucky lucky person you. Pax always.

More RoF or this would be great. I'd say to fly Wings Over Flanders Fields as the ultimate campaign sim for that era, but I'm not sure how viable to your recording format that would be. In a Camel you should focus on the glory of the right turn. Left turns will put you in a nose-up attitude and right will be nose-down. That means that it will naturally want to Yo-yo or Sliceback depending on which way you turn, and fighting that will increase your AOA. It was said it was quicker to turn left by turning right. Also, the better visibility with the larger window and the better gunsight should help. The extra 3kph or so likely isn't worth reduced awareness and ineffective gunnery.

The SE-5A was a much better fighter, much easier on the pilot and much faster; don't use turn fighting in this airplane, you should use its speed advantage to boom and zoom targets. The Camel was a good fighter for an exceptionally good pilot. Poor or average pilots tended to get killed by the tremendous engine torque, and ground loops at takeoff were common.

Liked it. From taking off in the knee high weeds to the "sheep " to the AI 2 plane tactics with the DR1s. More detail and challenging than ROF. Definitely need a better controller. I would definitely like to see you run a campaign through this as you learn how to fly the Camel versus the German triplanes. She's a different plane and superior to the Nieuports, but flies with her own strengths and weaknesses. Play to hers and avoid theirs. That means learn hers and learn theirs. Surprised that escorting the bombers doesn't mean once the bombers disengage and put enough distance in there if it isn't the escorts job to break off and disengage with the Germans and get back to escorting the Fb2's all the way home. Something that wasn't obvious to me from the briefing. Plus, we were escorting, why weren't we up above, behind, and closer to the bombers ... their being engaged fire a long time before we got there could have become a failure point for our part of the mission. Congratulations on getting two of the attackers. Let us not mention our part in the contretemps of the mid-air collision, I'll bet the Germans were as surprised as we were. Yes, I think that larger window will help keeping visual contact. And, i believe it is "larger window" and not "larger wing," I also think it's the same 18 meter (square footage total of the two wings) single seat front line fighter version of the Sop C at this point. There's a partial autobiography, taken from his letters home, mostly, by Dinsmore Ely from WW1 from flying with the Lafayette Escadrille and then seconded back to the Americans after they came in and who fought and died in that very action in 1918 resisting the German push. Published posthumously. Available free from Gutenberg.org for downloading and reading, and it's not too long.

Alfie West (not his real name) wisely faked his own death as his rising fame made his unmasking increasingly inevitable, and the hangman's noose loomed. He is currently in a PoW camp in Germany learning to speak French from his fellow PoWs, under yet another assumed name, which may or may not be Adrian Wright to match the initials sewn into his clothing, all other identification being unfortunately burnt with the wreck of his aircraft.

They have tubular steel frames instead of wood. The wings are internally braced and they're very strong that's why they don't have a bunch of bracing wires on them like the Camel does. Because the wings on the tri- plane were internally braced, they did not have the external struts that you see on the version that's flying. Test pilots noticed the wings flapping on the early version and absolutely insisted that the struts be installed, lol. I can't say that I blame them. I'd hate to see my wings flapping as I went through various turns and maneuvers...

You will need a joystick with a twistgrip (for rudder) as a minimum but, ideally a HOTAS (hands on thrust and stick) setup together with Track IR (head really needs to be on a constant swivel to survive)...rudder pedals would be a good idea but you can manage without. Costliest part to the above would be the Track IR, really...got mine for about £160. Hope that helps.

Enjoyable flight. But you have to watch out for poachers. A campaign would be nice.

First time flyer of the Camel here, how do you keep the bloody thing level? She wants to fly upwards yet her pitch is so sensitive that I end up porpoising for the whole trip!

I think you got the pilot on the DR 1 kill.

yeah it was, at first glance i thought that the cause of the crash were bullets that caused damage to the rudder, which jammed it to the right causing that spin, but upon further inspection, the pilot is very clearly slumpted over, indicating him being uncouncious from that burst.

Any further plans for this addon ? Would buy it if they add dynamic campaigns and more aircraft. Man, this looks so much better than RoF :-((

FC2 & FC3 are in the pipeline with the idea being to supply us with the whole western front by the end...full careers are to be included from the drop of FC2.

They didn't have parachutes for pilots in WW1, the planes seem to be made out of steel, and the damage models are crap. Just some of the many reasons that I prefer Rise Of Flight over Flying Circus. I hope that you return to it. IL2 does WW2 wonderfully, but they need to do a lot of work on Flying Circus before it would be as historically accurate or realistic.

the damage models are realistic, it was just wood with cloth, bullets went right through without causing Any damage at all, the only things you could damage are the engine or the pilot, in order to cut off the wing, you would need a good amount of bullets in a single line, much like how someone made a comment before, the very same principle applied to the Hurricane, it was a lot more Sturdy because it was so weak, the bullets and cannon shells just went right through without fragmenting or blowing up, all it did was cause a tiny hole, Take modern day examples, FMJ bullets go right through your body, causing little damage, but hollow points(idk their exact name) Disintegrate into multiple fragments, causing a TON of damage, almost like a "shotgun" once it enters the body, the only reason the military uses FMJs instead of HPs are because HPs are useless against Plate Carriers since they can't go through them, while FMJs have no issue. (i might be wrong on the types of bullets, i'm not exactly an expert i just like guns but i have bad memory to actually memorise everything about them)

Some German pilots did have parachutes during the last weeks of WW1. Ernst Udet was saved by his.
