The AI bit is worrying at first, but they do seem to have made it completely in-house, so it seems ethically made. This kind of thing isn’t really uncommon in music either, the AI features at least. Popular vocal synthesizers like SynthV and Vocaloid come to mind, they’ve also got AI features that they’ve had for a while that seem similar to what they’re describing. Even before now there were things like vocalistener that’d let you plug in your own voice to sing through a Vocaloid voice bank. It actually sounds kind of like Imogen Heap’s team have made a more complex version of a voicebank to me. Which isn’t bad. Generative AI is the real issue, and that doesn’t seem to really have much presence here thankfully

Just a PSA: AI is NOT inevitable. People make a conscious choice every day to participate in a practice, THAT actively steals from living artists. As well as, wreck the planet further from an ecological level due to the carbon emissions produced from using AI. I adore Imogen Heap’s music though I think AI in this manner can detract from it. I’m hoping with this it is more-so a voicebank then straight up Generative AI and a mashing of others work. However, the normalization and overt coveting of AI is very alarming. There is millions of other ways to invigorate the mind and create that we ourselves already have access to! If you read this, I implore you to go out and create on your own, collaborating ethically with others, and resist platforms like AI which will overtly hurt living artists in the long term.

So well said, it's not the technology, it's the people and ethics that surround it. It's so powerful to hear artists saying this, as it was mentioned artists are some of the most concerned about the impacts of extractive AI. But ironically if AI were *generative* in the philosophical sense, it would be made by mature companies who are prepared to have granular conversations about their training practices, and the rights to residuals derived from the learning, acceptable and unacceptable use cases for derivative products, etc. Can't wait to hear Murmur!

For years I've been watching Imogen become increasingly obsessed with technology, and her music getting gimmicky, overprocessed and cold. I remember the glorious days of Speak For Yourself and Ellipse - those albums captured Imogen at her creative peak, and the moment she balanced tech and soul masterfully. Ever since Sparks, the technology in her work has been growing more and more overbearing. 😞

It's a tool, not a replacement, it never will be. And they said it's not generative. What it does allow though is for talented lyricists and writers to make a pipe dream become a reality and get their words into song. Not everyone gree up in stable households that could afford music lessons, or they have disabilities that impede them. So listen to what was said in tge interview, its more an effects unit than anything. And I been used for years professionally and is used a lot more than people will admit. Timbabland now works for an AI music generation company. It's what got me back into electronic music after a 10 year break, I've gone out bought few synths and I getting a macbook to write on. I'm also going to keep using AI, its great for loops and samples.
