I used to fly the Bf-110 E2 on IL-2 Great Battles. The trick is to master the skid turn technique that only twin engined twin tailed aircraft can perform. This enables the 110 & P-38 to turn Flying with the 1CAG clan, we used to have no trouble out flying & downing enemy player pilots. On IL-2 Cliffs of Dover - Blitz, the Bf-110 C7 is way faster than the Spitfire II & Bf-110 E2, due to its engines.

I flew previously in Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3. Il-2 is a much more beautiful game. I had the opportunity of having a few early type and late model Bf110 to fly in that sim. I respect the 110 of its capacity for bombs and rocket load out. Like everything in life, it had its caveats. You have to have patience and determination even in the sim. I can only imagine what luftwaffe pilots went through in real life. It is a workhorse through and through.❤

Well said. Nobody today fully understands what these guys went thru - and nobody will as those days are gone forever. Now we do it for fun and might get a blister on a finger; for those guys the end could come at any second of inattention yet they still had to remain cool and calculating and remain a skill full pilot at the same time - let alone have human "needs" at the wrong moment...

I did a series of twin engine fighters from IL2 1946 while not invincible I found that if a 110 can pull off the most standard ACM's it can compete with single engine fighters yes It helps to have the advantage, but It is also quite rewarding to get a Hurricane to overshoot and go offensive. All of this is game specific Joachim Jabs had to be an exceptional pilot to be so successful during a real war. Thanks for a very informative video. Thunbs up 44 👍

Hans-Joachim Jabs (Pronounced "Yarbs"), was a German military officer and fighter "Ace" in WWII. Jabs was one of the few pilots in WWII that had success in two different types of aircraft being used for two totally different purposes. Jabs joined the Luftwaffe in 1936 as a Fahnenjunker (Equivalent to an E-5 Sergeant) at the age of 19. Upon graduating, he served briefly (two months) as a bomber pilot before going to conversion training as a fighter pilot. He successfully completed the conversion training and was posted to a unit that flew the ME109, the emerging premier fighter aircraft in the world at that point in time. His unit was then selected to convert to the new ME110 twin engined "heavy" fighter or what Germany deemed as a "Destroyer" aircraft. Many German Luftwaffe High Command personnel including Hermann Goring believed that the ME110 would be the backbone of Germany's air force, even over the ME109 Fighter, thus the majority of funding in the development of fighter aircraft went to the ME110 over the ME109, much to the dismay of fighter commanders such as Adolf Galland, who knew the ME109 was superior over the ME110 in dog fights and shooting down four engined allied bombers. Jabs had been trained in bombers, fighters, and now heavy fighters and was an exceptional pilot and air tactician. Jabs would use surprise, height, and position of favor being launching an attack against another aircraft. Pilots knew the ME110 was inferior to Spitfires, Hurricanes, and other single engine monoplane fighter aircraft of that era, however, these aircraft were still none the less used for combat missions for the entire six years of WWII in almost every area of the european battlefields. ME110's (and the later variants up to the successful but lacking in numbers ME410 "Hornet") were seen in the sky's throughout Europe until the later days of the war when they were seen far less often due to fuel shortages, parts not being available to fix broken or battle damaged aircraft, and also lack of experienced pilot's to fly them. Training on the ME110 was more extensive than the single engined aircraft and only the most capable pilot trainee's were selected for twin engined aircraft training. Jabs would either hunt "free hunting" (a method many German pilot's preferred), or he would be sent to an area by an air traffic controller/radar controlled situation rooms with large amounts of highly trained personnel assigned plotting the fighters to intercept points using sophisticated radar technology of that era and maps/plotting boards) in order to shoot down the incoming bombers and the fighters that were protecting them. Jabs would sometimes engage in head-on attacks, often engaging in a deadly and dangerous game of "chicken" with his enemy opponent. Jabs survived WWII and became a successful businessman after the war. He would frequently attend re-gatherings of old WWII fighter "aces" and befriended many of his opponent pilots from the Allied nations after the war, including John Caulton whom he shot down in a head-on attack over Jab's airfield when he was returning from a mission. Caulton survived being shot down, and was quickly captured by the German forces. Jabs visited Caulton at a military base he had been brought to immediately after being captured in order to meet the brave pilot who almost shot him down over his own airfield. Jabs even gave the allied pilot a hand written note to prove the two had met and even wrote on the note asking any German who found the note, to allow Caulton to keep it in his possession. Caulton kept the note. Caulton had been just seconds away from shooting down Jabs in the encounter, but Jabs, being the more experienced pilot, was able to outwit his opponent in a daring head-on attack with both planes barrelling at each other at over 300+ MPH each! Jabs and Caulton both opened up with their guns at each other while flying head-on, but Jab's bullets and cannon shells disabled Caulton's plane and he was shot down. Jab's landed safely, although his aircraft had also sustained damage. The meeting of Jabs and Caulton was captured by German military propaganda photographers.

Great video , i always wondered about the 110 ,derided as 'Gorings folly', but then i noticed there were some 110 aces made during the Bo B, that got me thinking, it could not have been 'that bad', there was a lit of propaganda going around to bolster the publics resolve on both sides, so things like that have to be taken within the context of that, but the question remains in my mind , why tie it to the slow bombers,if it had slow acceleration, why not use it like the similarly heavy jug P- 47, in jumping from altitude tactics, and going right up again using the inertia, of its weight...rinse and repeat, the jugs achieved sucess that,with the same poor accelaration charectaristics due to there great mass,or am i missing something about the 110's flight characteristics....was it a lack luster diver perhaps?
@BlueMax109
@BlueMax109 Жыл бұрын
Early in the war tactics and concepts were still being tried and tested. The assumption of mutual protection was also made by Curtis Lamay to the great peril of the 8th Air force that nearly lead to its complete destruction at the hands of the Luftwaffe. The Luftwaffe in general did not listen to the likes of Galland and Molders in regards to operational tactics right through the war. And Gunther Rall said Ernst Udet despite being a WW1 ace wasn't well suited to a strategic operational role either. In terms of the dive characteristics insofar as the simulation is concerned I find it to be the best tactic for staying with the faster single seat single engine types. But you still have a small window of opportunity to make your shots count. So must be skilled at gunnery to pull it off and also know when to break off the attack. I did another video on P47 tactics you might like where I discuss precisely those characteristics you mention. It's widely held that this sim poorly models the Thunderbolt as there is a perception due to its kill ratio that it was a much better performing aircraft than what is modelled. But according to my research the allies themselves admitted it's only advantage over axis fighters was its dive speed. And they deployed it in accordance with this and achieved great success.
@maxoutyoutlife5261
@maxoutyoutlife5261 Жыл бұрын
You brought up my point I was about to make. The P47 has some operational similarities to the 110. When the P51 was mass produced, most USAAF fighter squadrons transitioned to the P51 and lauded its performance over the P47, save for one squadron (can’t remember its number atm), who kept with P47 and defended its performance and had operational success against luftwaffe fighters. Using the 47’s strengths to make energy attacks, their “boom and zoom” accounted for many kills. The 110 could be deployed in such a manner as Jan’s demonstrated.

Your basing this on a computer simulation is laughable. Many aces was made flying the Me-110s in combat against single engine fighters. My friend John Vasco has interviewed Me-110 drivers and written many books on the aircraft type. The Luftwaffe pilots that he interviewed knew their aircraft and flew them to emphasize their strengths so combat against single engine fighters wasn't as difficult as you make it out to be. Thats why basing research like this off a computer simulation is laughable at best.

I am basing it on history. The fact that you can't accept the historical record is what is laughable. I see this is your second comment and you still haven't even watched the video...

"Many aces was made flying the Me-110s in combat against single engine fighters" - This entire video is about one of the top BF110 ace's who got multiple kills against single engine fighters. I also provide a complete list of all 110 ace pilots at 2:27 in the video, meaning you didn't even get two minutes into the video before coming to the comments to criticize it. "The Luftwaffe pilots that he interviewed knew their aircraft and flew them to emphasize their strengths so combat against single engine fighters wasn't as difficult as you make it out to be" - I literally demonstrate this in the video. And emphasize exactly what you have just described in almost exactly those same words at 10:10 in the video. You wouldn't know this though because you clearly have not watched it.
