Thank you Professor Pappe, I am 84 yrs old and in 1947 I saw the Pathe News film in my Cinema, Palestinians, old, young, babies, mothers and some men arriving at the borders of Gaza and forced into Gaza by Israelis at the point of their bayonets. I was appalled and told my father and mother what I had seen. Mum was a Christian Zionist and approved what was happening. My father, an ex soldier had been in Palestine said, Son, it is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees, those Palestinians can trace their ancestry for over 80 generations, the Zionists only 5 generations. The Palestinians will never leave whilst they still have life in their bodies! He was right. If the Zionists are successful in Gaza they will also gain the oil and gas reserves off the coast which are worth 70 billion dollars. That never gets much coverage in the Media. Ed Freegard

Balfour was prime minister in 1905 when the UK passed the Aliens Act which was designed to make it difficult for Eastern European Jews to come to the UK. The act was supported by many wealthy British Jews who had positions of power and influence, they feared the effects on their status of huge numbers of of ordinary Jews who did not speak English and would be a threat to the jobs of British workers and be a cause of riots. That is why the influential Jews supported sending them somewhere else. The leaders of the Jewish community were not pro Zionist. Lord Rothschild, one of the wealthiest men in Europe, was in favor of creating a colony in Palestine because he would make money. These are some of the reasons why the Balfour Declaration letter was sent to him.

I took part in the occupation of the LSE administration building in 1986 against LSE investment in South Africa, meeting inspirational visitors like the late, great David Kitson. On a more serious note, I don't think encouraging Israelis and Palestinians to believe any of us is ever going away is useful, it's only prolonging the suffering. There are currently around 7.5 million jews and 7.5 million palestinians from the river to the sea. Not enough of either side will leave, die, or dramatically change culturally. We must find ways to live peacefully together in a one democratic state or two states.

Sorry, I thought this was about the Arab invasion of the Holy Lands in the 7th Century AD when they killed much of the original population of Christians and jews and when many of the survivors fled to Europe. The remaining Christians and jews had to pay a tax muslims did not have to pay to keep their religion, such that poor Christians and jews had to convert to survive.

They allowed the Jews long exiled from Palestine and Jerusalem by the Romans to return and live in there again. As for tax, the muslims paid their own tax which is called Zakat, and in many cases this was more than the tax paid by the Jews and Christians which was called Jizya. Moreover, priests, women, children, the poor and not working of the Jews, Christians, Zoraostrians who lived under Muslim rule were exempt from Jizya. Read history before you write again.

They fought with those empires against the Muslim Arabs who were invading from Arabia. Go look up the Nabateans, The Ghassanids, The Lakhmids, etc. The problem with western foreigners for whom race is a big thing, which isn't in the East, is they project their racial hierarchist/essentialist worldviews onto the East and naively confuse race and religion. For them/you the Arabs are Muslims, and the Christians of the East were not Arabs because they weren't Muslims.
