Ilaveezha poonchira is a hill station on the way to Thodupuzha from erattupetta which is 60km away from Kottayam is gaining tourist importance.
Located among three beautiful hillocks Mankunnu Kudayathoormala and Thonippara ilaveezhapoonchira is a place of picturesque charm. Legends say that the pool here was a bathing place for Panchali the legendary heroine of Mahabharata. The D.T.P.C. is developing this place into a trekking spot. A tourist bungalow with rooms and dormitory to accommodate 15 people has been constructed. The beautiful valleys of Poonchira are spread across thousands of acres. The verdant landscape punctuated by the gigantic hills each rising to around 3200 ft. is an ideal place to unwind. During the monsoons when the valley fills up to form a scenic lake this place unveils yet another beautiful slice of nature. Ilaveezha poonchira means valley where leaves don’t fall and is named so because the place has no trees. This is also one of the best places in Kerala to witness both the sun rise and sunset.
Ilaveezhapoonchira road is now neatly constructed up to the view point junction and canan bridge is on the way to ilaveezhapoonchira. You can enjoy a small stream of water from this bridge. Muniyara dam is also an attraction on the way to ilaveezhapoonchira. In muniyara cave one can hear the sound of water flowing with force from outside.
It has got a narrow opening but once you reach a few feet inside, one can walk straight and can see water falling from a stream that never dries up. The Muniyara cave too used to be frequented by tourists.
Police wireless station is also picturesque old building in ilaveezhapoonchira top point. You can also enjoy the cochin refinery, alapuzha beach light house, malankara reservoir view and thodupuzha town from the top view. Ilaveezhapoonchira is just 14 km away from illikkalkallu.
The cold breeze and the fog that rolls through the mountains during most parts of the year are a delight for visitors. Besides, the sunrises and sunsets at Ilaveezha poonchira are also the most spectacular in Kerala.
