It is too bad cotrubas didn't do this in the late 70s when her voice was and it's Prime. My favorite lyric soprano of all time. My daughter fell deeply in love with her when we bought her Traviata . I as well I was so impressed by her beautiful voice so expressive and true. I think her Traviata speaks for itself it's the best I've ever heard and I've heard many of them. Cotrubas' soprano voice is my favorite. The shimmering color, tender texture and red wine timbre soothes my ear with poignance warm, and mysterious. One of the best Violettas for her three dimensional incarnation and artistic dedication. Watching her and the GOAT tenor Domingo in the 1981 Met production with the wonderful MacNeil as Germont, Levine conducting. When the dream cast and crew collaborate like that, well, timeless magic. I love her attention to the meaning of every word in the text, the way she caresses the word 'Carlo" with her voice and lets 'miei verd'anni" drop away as though she's resigning her youth right then, beautiful

I agree. I think that Cotrubas is a great singing actress. Just her delivery of "Francia!" is moving.

I agree with some that the aria might be slightly too big for her. However, she really considered about the role, music and lyrics, and found a different approach to sing this aria from other big names. And I shall say, she did much more than than singing --- she acted as well; in the second half, her expressions, eyesights and movements really touched me.

The great Romanian Soprano Virginia Zeani is now posted singing this magnificently. Her generous lyric voice matured into a full spinto, ideal for Elisabetta.

I was very skeptical about it only to be positively surprised! Although she does not have those spinto top notes which are so vital for this role, her creamy and even though all registers lyric soprano plus her discipline and feeling for Verdian lines makes for a great rendition of this aria! She also has a level of legato unavailable in most of singers in this repertoire! Fabulous Cotrubas!

Ileana did the great job! She is one of the greateast Elisabeta like Montsterrat though she could sing this part slightly earlier

I think she once said that in her later years she dared to sing other Verdi operas than Traviatta and Rigoletto: Alzira, Otello, Don Carlo (and maybe Simon Boccanegra??), although they didn't fit her voice well. She tried a more lyrical approach.

I love her voice, her manner, everything. I don't care so much that the role may have been a bit big for her except that singing such roles may have sped her vocal decline. Still, it's such a gorgeous tone.

yeah the orchestra is a little big for her, but I am glad she did not try to blast her way through them, we bless her for that. Lovely legato, which is what I expect from her whenever she opened her mouth.

Oh, I don't know. Caballe and Ricciarelli both did pretty good ones, as memory serves. I always figured she had that much power but was very, very careful.

if you like the french original get the dvd of the chatelet production with Alagna, Mattila, Hampson, Van Dam and Meier. Brilliant even though I find Van Dam a bit light for Filip and Meier's french can a bit strange

I absolutely love her voice - it has a uniquely plaintive timbre - but note that she does rather too much sliding in and up to notes to compensate for the heaviness of the role - that isn't all just expressive portamento but a survival technique which probably wasn't great for her voice. Nonetheless, the result is very touching and very much better than the shrieking wobblers we have to endure these days. Luis Lima - supposedly a second-rank singer - is pretty good, too - makes you realise what a dearth of great tenors there is now.

Buen ejemplo del repertorio que la gran Ileana debería haberse ahorrado. No suena italiana, no puede mantener las frases largas de verdi sin respirar en el medio. Una pena que una magnifica cantante le entrara a este repertorio tan elejado de su técnica, su voz y sos dotes interpretativas. Prefiero a la joven Freni o a la Ricciarelli de los años 70 antes que a esta magnifica rumana que brilló en otro repertorio

it isn't written in the Italian style because it was written for the Paris Opera to a french text. I actually prefer the french 5 act version, which was recorded by Ricciarelli and Domingo.

Lovely timbre and her sweet voice was always a lyric one therefore unsuitable for almost all Verdi roles. Gilda should be ok earlier. This is a voice for Mimi, Marguerite, Susanna or pure lyric parts.

Substandard in every way, both vocally and dramatically. Elisabetta requires a much more substantial and imposing (in her grief) rendition.

Are you insane. This is exactly what Verdi wrote for. Elisabetta is a young woman who is in love with the first person she is betrothed to and then stolen from him by the man who should have been her father-in-law. She should not sound like some "imperial queen" but a young woman forced into queenhood who can still remember the love of her youth.
