jacqueline Du Pré is one of the really greates cellists. I remember about her interpretation of the elgar-Celloconcerto.

Inbal Segev is an absolute sorceress on cello. she is amazing!! I am hugely influenced by her playing. she has a KZbin channel and I have spoke to her through comments she is beautiful, warm and elegant as a person too!

I’d like to give it a shout to Anastasia Kobekina (particulary with her Rococo Variations) and Lucia Swarts, hearing them is really really worth it, I strongly recomend it

I currently study with Wendy Warner and she never stops to impress me when she demonstrates/performs.

I heard for the first time Brahms' cello sonata for cello with Wendy Warner, so I went to get the video on KZbin and found it spectacular, too beautiful, the cello looked like part of her body from so much mastery of the instrument

Before Guilhermina Suggia, a French cellist named Lise Cristiani was touring and performing as a professional cellist in the 1840s. She sadly died of cholera in Russia while on tour. There isn't a lot of information about her online, but Felix Mendolsson's Song without Words (the manuscript is titled as a Romance without Words) Op. 109 is dedicated to her. Another favorite woman cellist of mine is Raphaela Gromes, a German cellist whose beautiful album Femmes is inspiring people to play and listen to more women composers.

My favourite is Jacqueline du Pré. I love her passionated play. To me she brought every piece she played "alive" - and deeply touching.

Christine Walevska should have been in this video an extraordinary Cellist. I just saw her Student Sol Gabetta. Christine Walevska’s numerous recordings on Phillips label are phenomenal. Dvorak, Saint Saens are 2nd to no one.

I’m so glad you did this video I never heard of the ladies you mentioned here except Jacqueline Duprey. and they are indeed fantastic musicians. I’m a student cellist and I love to discover more professional cello players that I can mentor, but there is another incredible female cellist that you didn’t mention here and that’s Ofra Harnoy (Israeli-Canadian cellist). she has such a warm and powerful tone she is truly amazing.
@Gerardo02168 ай бұрын
You should have mentioned Raya Garbousova because of her legacy as a cellist and all the pieces written for her like the Barber Cello Concerto

A “newcomer” who just won the Queen Elizabeth competition a few years ago who absolutely deserves to be on this list and she is absolutely mind blowing is Hayoung Choi. Du Pré is my favorite cellist of all time, and I love many on this list but thank you for showing me many new cellists to learn from.

One of the greatest of all time is Christine Walevska. She is an American classical cellist. She is known for her numerous recordings with Philips Records and performing concerts worldwide. In 1975, she became the first concert musician to perform in Cuba under the regime of Fidel Castro.

From this list hard to pick a favourite. Gabetta is like the Queen, and Segev has these amazing Bach interpretations so full of life. I would say to anyone else, of course Camille Thomas and Anastasia Kobekina are good to listen to also. Astrig Siranossian, is like my speciality pick though. She has a very unique take on cello performance as well as being an amazing singer.

😂DuPre for her interpretation of the Rococo Variiations. Today we should consider Weilerstein. Thanks for presenting this topic. Nelsova is also one of my favorites.

Rostropovich said that the only student he had who had the potential to surpass him was Jacquline Du Pre. She is for sure a contender for the greatest player ever male or female. Incidentally her name actually originated from Jersey Channel Islands rather than France. I definitely think Beatrice Harrison and May Mukle deserved a mention. Two of the greatest female cellists in the world in the early 20th century.
