@Dang_Near_Fed_Up Жыл бұрын
True, but I would like to see an option where it is skill / craftsmanship used to make the lock / release not any kind of pre-made let alone electronic device. In the past a fine cabinet makers skill was displayed by the number of secret compartments that carpenter could hide in a piece of furniture.

Nice table! I appreciated your monologue about receiving a knife as your first tool and the importance of carrying one. Knives are often thought of as simply a slicing implement, but they are incredibly versatile and powerful tools. They can be used for scoring, puncturing, prying, peeling, untying tough knots, cleaning narrow spaces, and many more purposes. Knives really are a primary example of mankind's mechanical advantage, and a fantastic representation of what makes humans so incredible.

You make some sensible points about carrying a knife. I have always carried a knife, for the reasons you mentioned, since I was c7 and am now approaching 70. You are so right when you say that a knife is [should be] a tool and not a weapon.
@john.h.richards1 Жыл бұрын
Very cool! I like the RIF lock too but I think I would have gone with a low tech magnet lock that doesn't require batteries. The secret is that you would be the only one to know where to apply the magnet key. Also may have gone one further and add a spring into the locking mechanism that the key would have to be the correct strength to unlock the lock... meaning too strong and it would pull the locking bar too far and keep it locked... too weak and it wouldn't pull it far enough. Just a thought for future use. Thanks again !

For the knife part, I got myself a leatherman skeletool CX close to a decade ago. I never leave my appartment without it, and it's been handy so many times. As for functionnality, it's pretty limited, with only a locking blade, pliers, bottle opener and a screwdriver with 4 bits, but realistically, in a pinch I've never needed more than that, and it stays pretty compact.

This is a great project that I can see building myself...and others in the family when they see it and ask for one for themselves. I really like the RFID locking mechanism. I'd have to incorporate a stop of sorts for the sliding portion since I can see myself opening it too far and dumping everything on the tabletop onto the floor. Poor lamp...I really liked it~! Thanks Bob~!

Cheaper and more reliable than the RFID is a simple steel slug in a brass body with a spring, that is in the wood, so you use a strong magnet to pull it back, then slide off. No batteries to fail, no leaking ooze from Durahell mess, and the magnet can easily be explained as a thing to hold the lego figure to a polished steel lamp base, with a few around to hide this.

Love the build, I am thinking of doing something similar for a coffee table and having a compartment for the laptop, although I was thinking of making a locking mechanism from magnets. Ramon Valdez has some great designs using magnets. As for carrying a knife here is the uk it is illegal and can lead to a jail sentence. It's a shame as one would have came in handy a few times when I have been out in the country side with the dogs and there tails get tangled in the brambles. .
@Iliketomakestuff Жыл бұрын
Go for it! Magnets are a common solution for this. That would certainly be helpful if you are opening it often. There are some baby-proof cabinet locks that work similar. I really like being able to choose the "key" rather than it being any magnet, but they would totally work for a secret opening. 👍

Way better in my opinion. I have not tossed the other piece yet, but something that can go in the upcoming garage sale for sure! Will let someone else make that call. The same sled you would use if you don't have a jointer. Also called a straight line sled.

Might have pointed out the depth setting on the biscuit joining, too. It is kinda important for keeping the top (and bottom) surfaces aligned. It's cool you have enough space around your bed to have the top slide sideways! Most bedrooms I've ever had are not that large! Therefore I'd have to 90° your plans so it slides out frontwards. Meantime, you have given me ideas to fix the bedside tables mum made for me when I was 18-20yrs old. The top is glass and there's a kinda central shelf with a drawer underneath that she has resting on ledges, however, the sides are hollow as are a pine frame with cane mesh inserts so the drawers can actually twist and then hit the rear part of the frame so they don't fully close, whilst typing this I'm now thinking to suspend the drawer somehow. Drawer slides wouldn't work as would need to be in the side voids, hmm, back to the drawing board. Nice hidden cavity though, I have some RFID items for use in my escape room builds, hmm, ideas abound
