I'm a solitary engineer, & I usually think things through really well, but I was going to add a small fan inside of a flexible dryer duct leading outside, with a fume-hood inside. But then you said "fumes passing over a motor" & I couldn't believe I missed that part in my plans. Thank you sir.

I still would not recommend his fan setup. Yeah the fan motor is outside the air flow, but that blower cage is not explosion proof due to the rotating cage bearings and overall construction. Better to get an explosion proof fan.

Daisy chaining the ventilation system to accommodate the laser, paint booth, etc is a great idea and solves having to have dedicated systems for each! I plan to add air filtration to vent fine particulate dust to the outside in addition to my air cleaned inside.

GREAT BUILD! If I ever get a shop I am building this paint booth. Right now I just work in a large shed outside and I just leave the two big shed doors open when I spray paint so no need for a ventilation system. The small paint booth like space is right at the front of the shed right by the doors that will be staying open while I paint something.

As a guy whom does duct work for a living, I was screaming about upsizing until I saw the note about you changing to 6". Came out great and looks good. Great project and video as always. In the future you can use a "ductulator" (they're like 20 bucks on Amazon) to figure out pipe sizing based on desired/required cfm.

One thing you may want to add is a fresh air inlet vent, otherwise you may get reduced airflow from the negative pressure. I currently just open a window when running our laser extraction fan, helps increase airflow. In my other shop I added an external inlet vent for when the paint extractor fan is on.

Great video! I'll be planning a spray booth soon at my new place and don't have a lot of space so the fact that this design can be sized is good to know. One thing with the coroplast is that it's usually better to use washers with the screws, especially on those edges that will experience movement like around the doors. I used to work a lot with coroplast at a couple of sign companies I worked at. You will see the coroplast wear around the screws over time.

Very interesting video. I did a smiliar project for a welding fume exhaust system in my basement. I used a fan like yours and made the same initial mistake of using a too narrow pipe with it. I started with 4 inches, like you, and I ended up with an 8 " one. Works great !

Great project Bob! I was just talking to my wife about building a small spray booth in the garage and finding a way to eliminate fumes so it doesn't leak into the house. I'll have to see if I can modify this design to fit my shop. Might be able to link it to a larger plastic spray booth so I could spray finish on tables and other larger pieces as well.

I really like this format, and I don't care how long you make your videos. I will watch every one you put out. I used to core drill concrete as an electrician, in this case you would want to turn off the hammer drill function (why the mortar vibrated out) and just use it as a drill. A water drip would negate the dust and prolong the diamond coating while helping remove the waste.

Nice. I have a small basement shop. I am designing a knockdown booth because there's not enough space for a permanent one.. I only use water borne finishes, so it's easier to get right. This video gave me some ideas for sure.

@@Iliketomakestuff The aluminum tape actually works much better, as ventilation piping is its intendid application. It seals better, and has a much better longevity. Air leaks tend to dry out the gaffer tape.

I just did a side-by-side of this video, the Christmas Cannon (best way to decorate a tree ever!!) plus a few others, old and new, and I do feel that this video's voice-over was better. Maybe it was your delivery, proximity to the mic, or post-processing but it just sounds warmer and clearer to me, but, like a lot of things, audio is just about personal preference.

I'm not an electrician but I'm pretty sure you should add an independent ground cable to your blower's housing. It can build up static electricity and potentially ignite paint fumes, even if your motor is not in line with the fumes. Awesome build though, paint booth has been on my list for a while, definitely going to borrow some of your ideas

The glue in the duct tape is going to dry out and lose any seal you had... Foil tape lasts darn near forever! And its shiny! Great build though!!!

Yeah, silver flashing tape would be better, as it's designed for this application. (I've seen enough This Old House to know never to use Duct Tape(tm) or it's variety of knock offs.) BUT, if the pipe is piped so that the direction of airflow goes with the male ends of the pipe point to the exit point and the female ends point back along the path to the machine, it shouldn't be too much of an issue? He'll just have to make sure he periodically inspects the system for leaks. (Maybe it's time to invest in a smoke machine?)

FWIW I’ve had issues with gorilla tape staying stuck over the long term the adhesive separates from the tape fabric. If it fails you, a great sealing alternative is foil tape. It’s quite a bit more sticky and you can burnish it down into the gaps and such to create a nice seal.

Great video, thanks for sharing! You may want to make it fully enclosed in the future, so that you’re not pulling dust or particles over the part you’re painting. A simple suggestion, you could add a filter to one of your doors for return air and maybe drape plastic over the front opening.

May be able to use HVAC flex ducting as well since it isn't sucking in hot air so you could get even more air flow. Great video! 3D print a bracket for the dryer vent to sit on to fill in the gap around it.

So, here’s a quick and easy way to increase the draw on your booth without having to put larger ducts through your shop... add a plenum (just a fancy word for an air tight box) to the intake side and run multiple smaller ducts to the booth. You’re still going to have to run a large exhaust duct to the outside (or multiple exhausts off an exhaust plenum). Just be sure the surface area of the diameter of the intakes roughly equals the surface area of the exhausts at their most restrictive points and you should achieve the best flow possible. (Example: a 4” joint of ductwork has about 12.5 sq. in. of surface area). And be sure you allow about 1 sq. ft. per ton of the furnace unit your squirrel cage fan came from or you risk burning up your motor quicker than normal. Great vid!!

I think I can honestly say this is the first time I've seen a maker use duct tape in a build for duct tape's intended purpose. Great work Bob! I needed to re-do my paint booth for airbrushing and this gave me some great ideas.
