Lofi didn't necessarily "begin" somewhere, but producers like JDilla, Madlib, and Nujabes are often cited as being some of the producers who helped establish the lofi sound as it is today. Really, oldschool is where everything started, and vinyl sampling has been there since the start, which is where the lofi aesthetic really comes from in general, plus the old analog samplers which were cutting-edge at the time. Oldschool RZA beats definitely had a lot of warm lofi sound to them.
