MATTHEW CURTIS, tenor, recently performed with the Grammy award-winning Chanticleer, where he held the position of Assistant Music Director. He also sang with the internationally acclaimed Rose Ensemble in 2009 and the Santa Fe Desert Chorale for one summer in 2009. Matthew began singing choral music at age 7 with the La Crosse Boychoir and sang with the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman Gallery Singers for nine years beginning in 1999.
A Wisconsin native, he received his bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education as a Liberace Scholar from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 2008. He continued studying for a year in the graduate school at the University of Minnesota focusing on opera.
Matthew's solo performances include light, lyric tenor roles. Matthew played the role of Steva in Janacek's Jenůfa and the lead tenor role of Male Chorus in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia at the University of Minnesota. Viterbo University roles included Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Monsieur Vogelsang (Der Schauspieldirektor), and Policeman Chorus (Pirates of Penzance). Past oratorio performances include Messiah and The Creation.

Your soprano tone just amazes me. I'm a female and I can't even produce a tone like that. Amazing job, Matthew!

Matthew: really wonderful, thank you. I'm curious about how you record these. What software and microphone do you use? You obviously use some reverb, but do you add any other effects? Do you use any pitch correction (I suspect not)? How many takes does each track usually take? Thanks for posting your singing.

For me, he's cutest with the beard; Rounds out his face, and brings out the eyes. // Matthew, if you are out there, i encourage you to keep on doing multi-track recording. Choirs are great, but it's very difficult to control the echoing when your are in a space. These isolated recordings sound great, and i like the fact that you are not doubling any voice--a very pristine effect, compared to a large choir. I'd love so hear you adding big cathedral-sized reverb to your dry mixes. Could be unique. You could even put out "Cathedral Versions" of each piece! Also, (and i hope i'm not ranting at this point), try this. Record the exact same line twice, but putting one recording to the stereo LEFT, and the other, stereo RIGHT. This will take twice as long to record, but you'd be surprised at how much body and texture this would naturally add to the recording. -- frank montoya in Bent, New Mexico
