That's weirdly adorable though, I love that idea, though probably it didn't happen because the people behind Illumination didn't really think that far ahead? Just a guess that they didn't think it would be SUCH A BIG SUCCESS of a movie, they didn't want to plan in something so critical to Gru's character be a slowburn change, what if it didn't go well? And we didn't actually get that sequel? It could've worked great as a standalone movie, "villain becomes a more compassionate villain 'cause now he's a single father to 3 gorls and wants them happy" but they could've approached it badly idk? The Minions actually had an integral part in the second film because the main villain was using them for his own nefarious plan, which was using the mutant serum on them to become his indestructible army and it was his attempt to get Gru to go back into villainy and join him. Everything else after the second film is when the Minions would be used for mainly filler.

There's a certain window in which the moon orbit is good enough to allow for a space mission. If I recall correctly, in the movie it was about the moon being close enough or something.

Even though the franchise doesn't compare to this first film, I personally think it would have been a lot better (or at least, more interesting) if Gru continued to be a villain even after adopting the girls. Of course, he should ultimately do good things by the end of each film (gotta have good morals for the kids), but otherwise it would have a ton of potential.

But he can't "have good morals for the kids" if he's a villain, no matter what kind of things he would do at the end of the films, it wouldn't erase or downplay the rest of things he would have done, that's one of the reasons why he changed, and that's also one reason why I think the change, both for the kids and himself, is a good one, what they would have to do would be something that would work with that premise and idea, but they could do it like with him being a villain and everything else, there are tons of films with heroes too

I honestly thought that this film, along with its first sequel, which were both from my childhood, were pretty great. Then it went downhill with the more recent sequels and the Minions prequel, which I thought were decent. The only time it went uphill was with Minions: The Rise of Gru, which was a good film, even if it still wasn’t as good as Despicable Me 1 and 2. You know the only Illumination film I consider to be bad? Hop (2011)

I thought the rise of gru had potential and for some reason, despite not being part of the target audience, I was really hyped for it, but it came out pretty shitty. Despite them finally having the chance to go deep into Gru's origin story and fully show us what led him to become a supervillain, as I should have expected, they instead focused on the minions entirely and completely forgot what they had originally planned for his character in the first Despicable me. At this point I am starting to believe Illumination regrets making my childhood and they're just actively trying to destroy it.

Hey, they also tried with the second film as well. I’m not going to sit still and let Despicable Me 2 get the Illumination hate treatment, so I’m going to defend it till I die. The second film tried to continue Gru’s arc of being a family man in a natural direction by having him find his soul mate and the film did try to give the Minions some plot relevance with the main villain kidnapping them to use the mutant serum on them to create his own indestructible army.

Man, some of these background music choices are great deep cuts. I've been on a bit of a Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness nostalgia trip on KZbin and didn't expect it to continue in a Despicable Me review. 😆 Great review. I think I can agree with all the points here. Very fun movie. Nothing super heart-wrenching, but enough to feel meaningful and let you connect to all the characters. Love the analysis about the architecture and interior, as well as Nefario being metaphors for Gru.

The original is the best because it has more storyline with Gru and the girls while having the minions as actual minions. They don’t overdo the minions screen time which I absolutely respect. The later movies just have a lot more of the minions in it than the other characters.

The second film has some effort and heart too with amount of focus on Gru and his new life as a father and finding his soul mate to help with the gorls and the Minions actually are used cleverly in the plot with the main villain abducting them to inject a stolen serum into them that turns them into indestructible mutants and use them in his plan to wreck havoc on the world.

Illuminations now has a second billion dollar movie franchise in the Mario movie and probably other Nintendo franchises because of how popular some of them are. But there is a big difference between the Minions and Mario, and that is that Nintendo is in complete control of the movies, they even created their own movie studio to help and control everything. No matter what illuminations does, if nintendo wants to make the next movie better than the original then illuminations is forced to try to make it better, and since nintendo is a game company and game sequels are almost always better than original and nintendo's trauma with the live action mario movie that's probably exactly what they're going to do

Have to admit the first movie was the best one, and only real one because... He wasn't really Despicable after that movie. Now if he stayed villainous, but used his evil to counter evil other evil villains. Only really being heroic for his adopted daughters and later Lucy. *Who would Pretend to be his enemy as a cover, while in secret they date then marry after she fakes her death* That could work. Also kinda surprised they didn't reveal the Orphanage owner was a supervillain the whole time in a later movie, or Lucy just... Framed her after hearing how she treated them.

Funny enough I only recently went and watched this movie since I've started my own little journey of studying animation and there was a funny moment of my love for music and animation coming together. If you've ever played Bomb Rush Cyberfunk or listened to the soundtrack the track Lightswitch uses Gru's "Listen up please" as a clip.
