Personally, I think it would've looked better if the numbers and icons within the colored circles were pushed back to being the layer right on top of the colored areas so that the shadows were cast on them. Other than that, the end result was fantastic. I guess I'll try duplicating this with those characters placed where I want to see them and find out what it looks like myself.

First of all thank you so much for your kind words. Basically, color selection is a bit of science, a designer's taste and common sense. If you want to create a good color then you should understand basic color theory. Finally, practice makes perfect.
