True. It's not like he copies the reference exactly as it is anyway, he exaggerates certain features and changes the line of angle to give it a more "animated look", clearly showing skill in using references.

As som one who illustrates himself and hopes to do it professionally, I don't get that complaint. Sometimes a reference is needed, and it's not cheating, it STILL takes work and effort for to make the image work.... Heck, it takes about as much effort to make the photos viable references.

Currently my grandpa is still great friends with Alex Ross and I've actually met him once or twice. I even have one of his pieces signed hanging in my room. Alex Ross's style virtually demands reference material. He has the technique to create stunning hyper realism. If the anatomy and lighting isn't perfect, it would fail.
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 4 жыл бұрын
Look at the Shazaam art next to its reference: the posture, proportions, setting, figurative prominence, facial structure, and elasticity of the costume are *all* different. He took a picture of someone indoors for exterior artwork, and it still turned out perfectly. Even if the model was standing by a window, he's still not being lit the same way as if he'd been outdoors. Yet that's one of the only things he used. So, I don't think I can agree that his style demands reference. Maybe it does, he's the one deciding to use it after all, but he cans a lot of it in the end. I'm really impressed by how useless that reference feels in comparison to the finished artwork.

I always liked the way Romita Jr drew Spider-Man when he was in costume during his run with JMS in the early 2000s. But yeah, his faces can get samey and there's a boxy-ness to some of his characters that can look a bit stiff.

But that is the general color scheme of comicbookcs, particularly Marvel to have heroes in Primary colors and villains in Secondary. P.S. Magneto's got the purple cape, gloves, and piping. It really is a conscious decision they made. And very evident if you look at Spider-Man and his Rogue's gallery. It's not 100% uniform for obvious reasons, like the Hulk. But, in general, that's how they do 'em.

Well when you look at Alex Ross when he started out; he was basically doing stick figures with blobs of color around them, he vastly improved because he got proper training, both from an arts school and from his Mum, Lynette Ross, who is also an artist. So it's possible for anyone to get that good, only reason he got to be that good was because of his formal training (the people in his art are so lifelike because he tends to hire real people as models that pose for him too, he then paints on the superhero garments), and you can try learning some art theory and copy his artworks if needs be, but at the same time; don't be afraid to search for a style that resonates best with you.

The thing with color themes in comics and other types of media is green is usually used to represent bad or evil things like poison or villains while red, blue and gold/yellow tend to be hero/good themes i/e health potions. While it’s not exactly a rule it an ordinary thematic choice.

Guyver by Yoshiki Takaya. One of the longest running manga series, it has been going since 1985. What fascinates me about it are the extremely complex and detailed character designs. Takaya took influence from many Tokusatsu style sources. As manga styles have continually evolved as the years have passed many (not all) more modern series have moved towards more stylized less detailed character renderings I have always found it heartening looking back to the series that have been going constantly since the 1980's such as Guyver, Berserk, and JoJo and being blown away by the sheer amount of drawing and inking that went into each individual panel. An intricate style that has slowly been disappearing for many years now.

I almost can't even comprehend what Alex Ross gets out of using reference images, the end result is often *so* different, when you consider that the _details_ - the things most likely to be helped by reference - are often left out, altered or exaggerated in such a way that you can imagine being second nature to a career artist, you're almost left to wonder if he needs them as much as he thinks he does.

@PopCross Studios I recommend checking out Tetsuo Hara's art especially in Fist Of The North Star as he was basically one of the few artists who started the trend for the manly anime art style and depicted the anatomy of bodybuilder's and famous action stars quite wonderfully. I would recommend checking out both his older stuff as well as his last pieces. His use for complementary colours is great which in turn accentuates the story and character's emotion. Also, unlike newer artists, he primarily used watercolour paints for colouring. Sorry, this was long as shit but hey I got a lot of good stuff to say about Hara's work.

Mike Migola is one of my favorites because his work is drawn in a way where you wouldn't even need color to make the panels work, just the inks. His style lends itself so well to serial art. Having a simpler style means he can focus more on the story and emotional impact, rather than just getting a super detailed and accurate drawing. If you're an independent comic artist a style like this could be incredibly useful.

The reason so many spider-man villains and just comic villains in general had the color scheme they did, was because back in the day, the only colors available for the printers were CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black), and the printers' were also able to print certain percentages of these colors, giving them 64 possible combinations of colors, though darker colors were harder for printers to handle. The percentages were determined by the amount of dots per inch; if you look back to old comics before they were digitally remastered you can see, if you really zoom in, lots of dots that trick our eyes. Publishers would then send color guides to print houses which would use separators to individually cut out each color and lay them on clear acetate sheets and then get photographed, so that printers could then reproduce them. This lead to superheroes getting bright primary colors and villains getting the opposite. Also, Colorists would purposefully overly saturate colors so that when they would be printed on the newspaper, the would appear more muted, because the printers and papers were so far behind to what we have now.

I must admit, I lost a tiny bit of admiration for Ross' work after finding out how much photo referencing he uses, and I wouldn't feel that way if not for the fact that I can really tell when/where he DIDN'T have references cuz it wasn't as good in comparison. But having worked with various mediums, I have ton of respect for anyone that illustrates with watercolors.

Ross uses Gouache. The references Ross uses are his own. He does his own poses. 3D models, etc. If anything, I have more respect for him for being so dedicated to his craft. The reason why many of Spider-man's villains are green are that green is considered a "villain colour", especially in combination with purple (green goblin, mysterio, The Joker and Lex Luthor to name a few), with in turn is the reason Hulk's pants are always purple (to make the reader feel uneasy and see him as morally conflicted, kind of)
