Illustrator Reacts to Requested Comic Book Artists

In the short time that I've been doing 'Illustrator Reacts to Good and Bad Comic Book Art' I've gotten hundreds of requests for different artists who's work I should go over. So in this episode I'm going to talk about the manga, comic, design and fan art of a bunch of requested artists.
In this episode we've got Junji Ito, the widely requested artist of some pretty freaky horror art, Lee Bermejo, Akira Toriyama (the creator, writer and illustrator of Dragon ball) Esad Ribic, David Finch who's course to draw like him is linked here www.thegnomonw..., Jason Fabok, Skottie Young, Gabriel Picolo, Tsutomu Nihei, Andrew Wildman and Mark Bagley. It's a lot more artists than I normally talk about so I hope I did them all justice.
This was also a bit more of a genuine reaction. In the last few episodes I've spent more time researching a smaller number of artists, so I hope this episode is still as informative and entertaining as the previous ones!

Since a lot of people don’t know about Junji Ito’s personality: he’s actually a really big scaredy cat.....he did a tour of the Winchester Mansion with Crunchyroll (it’s on KZbin) and he was creeped out quite a bit

It's a TON deeper than that, but you got the main part. All of Ito's work has shade towards Japanese culture baked in. Gyo is about the horrific war crimes Japan committed during WWII, Tomie is about how beauty is regarded more than anything in Japan, Melting Classroom is about the absurdity and weaponization of apologizing in Japanese culture, and this one, from My Dear Ancestors, is how the weight and pressure of your ancestors forces you into a role. Those are all the ancestors of the protagonist's spouse, connected and feeding off the youngest head of the house. The older generation refuses to let go, and the weight compiles every generation, each new head feels the weight of all that came before them.

I highly recommend Hirohiko Araki's, specifically his more recent style. His more modern art focuses on more 'realistic' bodies and figure doing abnormal things, whether it be pieces skin peeling or just overall blizzare movement and poses

Yes Goku's hair are inspired by Astroboy's. Also consider that Toriyama had to rush a lot, during the creation of DragonBall. He had to release a chapter per week, with only one person to help, and without internet or fast communication. Considering that he had to give the sketch to the editor, do eventual corrections, having a bit of back and forth, it's a miracle he did it, at the time, that's why during that period his art was a lot angular and imperfect. They were essentially inked drafts wi a bit of definition. The Super Saiyan look and the usage of empty/desolated environments are all compromises done to spare time. If you read is last comic 'Jaco - The Galactic Patrolman' you'll see is Real and improved style.

I honestly couldn't stop laughing at your reaction to Ito's work. It does what it needs to do extremely well; I don't often get put off in any kind of way but a couple of his stories (particularly Gyo) have really made my skin crawl -- which is great! I haven't looked deeply into it but as far as I'm aware, he likes to take sometimes extremely simple ideas/scenarios or concepts and just makes them terrifying. They don't even always look that horrifying, but then you'll end up staying awake thinking about that one thing. Maybe starting with his Cat Diary is a good place. It has the less greusome looking work but gives a hell of a good introduction to his style of artwork.

I love the way Junji Ito uses shading in his artwork. All the shading is very dark, and obscures details, playing off the fear of the unknown. It makes your imagination fill in the gaps

The best thing I think with Akira Toriyama is that he’s just such an amazing manga artist and each panel just has such good composition and it’s so easy to fully understand the exact action that’s going on and where everything is which is great since most of the characters can fly and air battles are pretty common

perharps its because a majority of reader focusing on character, story line, and its kinda sad that most of manga or comic now a day has so shallow action base story type and sexualize their character to the point its ridiculous, where as Tsutomu's works arent focused on both of them. But because of that his works are the some of the most amazing things ever created. Highly focus on environment, atmosphere and can be interpreted any way you want. There's a video on the philosophy of his manga BLAME! about Existentialism which is really nice.

definitely. I get the impulse to talk about as many artists as you can (there just are so many out there) but a deeper dive just teaches you more. Like for junji ito it could have been interesting to talk of the caft that a lot of his characters are pretty "bland" in the sense that they are idealized, almost doll like, which contrasts nicely with the gross elements. And his art is also distinctively japanese but nowhere near "mainstream" manga styles. On a side note, themed episodes could be cool. picking a theme can tie this analysis together and compliment an in depth approach. Say you tackle Ito in a halloween special, you could compare and contrast the way he uses i=his art to disturb and shock with other horror themed art, maybe compare horror from different cultures, etc... BTW, it would be awesome to have a metal hurlant themed episode, talking about such artists as Moebius (or maybe he has already?) Enki Bilal, Caza, Philippe Druillet and others. There art was and still is very influential, but mostly in a "subterranean" fashion: they influenced famous movies and such without their work really popping outside of the comic book pedant world.

I think I've read so much Junji Ito that I'm not remotely bothered by it anymore. I do recommend the manga he did about his cats. He digs into his horror art style for everyday cat things for humor and it works really well. My suggestion list: Akira - Katsuhiro Otomo Vinland Saga - Makoto Yukimura Hellsing - Kouta Hirano Olimpos - Aki A Bride's Story - Kaoru Mori The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún - Nagabe Genkaku Picasso - Usamaru Furuya (This is a more anime generic style for him but it also shows off his work in several different styles). Gunjou - Ching Nakamura Children of the Sea - Daisuke Igarashi Sanctuary - Ryoichi Ikegami Kuro - Soumatou Dr. Stone - Boichi

I love Junji Ito, when people bring up "masters of horror" like Stephen King, George Romero etc, it is an absolute shame his name isn't mentioned in the same category. His art and stories are so cerebral and horrific.

You should definitely check out Boichi’s work specifically “Sun-Ken Rock.” He likes to flip between ultra-hyper-realistic close ups to simplified almost Chibi drawings of the characters and it meshes together beautifully.

If you do Moebius, it's almost essential to compare his sci-fi works with the more grounded work he did as Jean Giraud, for example Blueberry. The contrast is really interesting!

May I add one more and suggest that if you do talk about him, it would be cool to talk about other artists from the metal hurlant/heavy metal scene? Philippe Druillet, caza, Enki Bilal are the first to pop to mind but there are others who published in that era and style.

Always fun to see someone reacting to Ito's art. Might we see more Japanese artists in future videos? One I can strongly recommend is Hirohiko Araki. His earlier work starts out pretty generic, but he eventually finds his own style that looks fantastic and unique.

In my opinion, what sets Jason Fabok’s art aside from many others is his extraordinary use of contrast with any beams or backgrounds against the characters in the shot. In the first one you showed, the whip just completely feels like a magical item when it outshines everything else in the shot. Or take for example the middle one you show in the group of three, where the sky is emanating and setting it’s own presence, than it basically allows for Batman to be emboldened while still not distracting from him. Essentially I would call it light shadowing, but I don’t know if that’s even a term or not

You should see and talk about Brian Bolland's art of the birth of the Joker from Batman: The Killing Joke.

The Killing Joke is gorgeous, don’t know why they even bothered making a movie if they weren’t going to match the art quality. Half of that comic’s story is shown through detailed art, and the movie looked slightly better than The New Adventures of Batman and Robin

8:25 I remember seeing that Tsutomu Nihei panel and just staring at that pipe for 10 minutes trying to figure out how the hell he did that. He was an architectural designer for industrial plants before he started doing comics, and apparently he does most of those insane backgrounds without a reference. He's amazing.

Definitely agree with your comments about Fabok's skill with compositing splash pages featuring a large number of characters, in a way that feels cohesive. There's a lot of comic artists skilled with portraying a "big" moment, with the energy just exploding off the page, but Fabok is someone I've come to really admire specifically on that front. Was first introduced to his work through the Justice League event "Darkseid War", and definitely recommend checking out some of the artwork he did for it!

Ito's works are absolutely wonderful, and I think when checking out his artwork was the first time I had ever felt left out from not feeling something. His story "Glyceride" is incredibly disgusting conceptually, but it didn't even really phase me at all, despite this. I'd love to see you react to that. You seem really genuinely grossed out by his (admittedly somewhat tamer) artwork.

that Ito image of the weird repeating trail of scalps was creepy in multiple ways too: it looks like a millipede, a pretty creepy bug, but also kinda looks like intestines spilled out on the floor, which is gross. That on top of the fact that its made of freaking scalps.

The last piece by Fabok also had a pretty sweet triangle/heart-shape being formed by Supes, Batman and WW. From afar that shape stands out and almost look symmetrical and you're quickly drawn to WW's shield, which most likely was placed there to make sure you start in the middle?
