Odia is one of the six recognised classical languages of India along with Tamil, Sankrit, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. The curved appearance of the Oriya script is a result of the practice of writing on palm leaves, which have a tendency to tear if you use too many straight lines.

Odia is not North Indian, but an East Indian language (part of Magadhan lang grp ie descended from Magadhi Prakrit). Script wise its descended from Siddham script, so yes very unique.

Is that true? Can you really understand 90%? I'm a native Hindi/Urdu speaker, and I can only understand maybe 15% of the free-form dialogue. Some of the basic words listed were easy though; I recognized most of them.

The Odia flag is similar to the Buddhist flag, and the Buddha spoke Magadhi Prakrit/ Pali that is considered to be the Ancestor of Odia and other Eastern Indo aryan languages.

Since Bengal and Odisha are neighbouring states Bengali and Odia have similar sounds and words. I as a Bengali understood 90% of it. Hundreds of Bengalis like me visit Odisha every year in order to meet Lord Jagannath in the holy city puri. Please Andy make a video on Bengali 🙏

I'm not very familiar with dialects from India. I only know Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Gujarati. The only word I know is "namaste" But I'm very interested in every kind of language and was curious if there are influences of Austronesian languages like Bahasa Indonesia. Only because of Bhasa but that caught my eye

They both are sisters as they originated from the same source. Bengali and odia both came from the Magadhi Prakrit. They are the two fruit from the same tree that's why they are very similar.

One can say that if one adds the sound 'o' to a Bengali word then it becomes an Odia word. I liked the o sounding of many Odia words. Btw, I liked the sound of Odia more than Assamese. I think pronunciation wise Odia is closer to Bengali than Assamese.

Although it is a classical language, native speakers never speak the language like this. There is still some deletion of “Ô” at the end like Bangla.

It depends on which dialect you speak. In western and northern odia dialect 'ô' sound at the end is not pronounced. But in kataki/eastern dialects 'ô' sound is pronounced.
