Saw Fred McDowell and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee in concert in the early 70's and had a great time. Fred came out first and performed for about an hour and a half then Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee did about an hour and a half. After that Fred came out and joined them and all three played together for about an hour. It was a great concert and it was free.

Blues is built from the pentatonic scale. A series of naturally occurring musical tones.... Around since the days of ancient Greece (refer Pythagoras). So, the musical genre may only be 200 years old, but its soul has been around forever. I could go on with the history lesson, but I'll leave it there. For the record, I appreciate many musical genres. From Classical, Folk, Jazz to African rhythm, or the intricate scale use of Asian composition. It all has a place. Maybe you need to grab your self a good aged whiskey, sit down and educate yourself with some Robert Johnson or Blind Lemon Jefferson. And CHILL man!

When I was a teenager many years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and started playing a bit. Magically I started wanting to get to the roots of guitar, I can’t explain why but it made sense at the time. I looked for albums to feed my need and I somehow found this record in an independent record shop nearby the local college. I think that must have been in the mid 70s. I played the heck out of this thing....Well that album is long gone probably sold when everyone went to cds (what a mistake)....so here I am in 2020 re-united with my old friend. Good music lives forever.

I was fortunate to hang with a bunch of guys in the late 60’s, early 70’s, who introduced me to the blues, and Mississippi was one of our favorites. BB King was underground at the time, but became an international sensation. There are very few people with such unique style and talent, and it was great to see this. This is awesome! Freddie is basically giving everyone a tutorial in how to play Northern Mississippi slide blues. The way he says "Take yer time, Take yer time", and then plays the song at like half speed means he is trying to pass on knowledge. But he also shows the listener how fast he can really go, at the end. How fast, and how complex he can get with his playing. It's an incredible gift from one of the blues masters.

This is best Fred McDowell album-"I do not play no rock 'n roll".Orginally released on Capitol Records as LP EST 409 in 1969 & re-released in CD format by Fuel 2000 Records in 2001 with additional 5 bonus tracks.Both edition are in my my blues collection among other twenty Fred McDowell's discs.That was time when I've started interesting myself in real deal good music.
