He was super smart for dropping out of the Houston World Championships. The decision probably didn't come from him but probably somebody higher than him who had his best interest at heart. I kind of knew the politics would be a little different in the United States.

Michael Shipman I know he did it pretty far in advance, I read the same interview. It may not have been his decision but someone else's, a coach or someone higher up. I didn't expect him at The President's Cup, nobody ever competes or tries to lift world records at the President's Cup except in 2011 when David Bedzhanyan and Natalya Zabolotnaya set world records. I think Zabolotnaya had to post good enough total to make the Olympic team which she did and made silver when no one expected her to do it. They must have paid Ilyin really well to lift at the PC, there was no competition for him whatsoever (he didn't to wait on other lifters, because he's the last guy to lift), just a routine heavy workout for him in front of an audience. It doesn't look like he's peaked yet and if all goes well he should obliterate the competition in Rio. He's very well protected and has the full endorsement from his government and president when comes to money.

Michael Shipman He's already qualified for Rio. He didn't really do that well in London if memory serves me right. In any case, Ilyin is going to distance himself away from any competition he has once he starts totaling 440kg. If Akkaev or Aramnau were still healthy they're the only two that could've kept up with him.

Giulio Di Cienzo Nuridinov didn't make any world records in London, he lifted in the 105kg class. He totaled like 404kg and managed only 220kg in the clean and jerk. Ilyin beat him by 14 kilos and was lifting as a 94.

People seem to think the only reason he lifted this is because of PEDS.. I challenge you to find another 105kg who takes the same drugs and maybe even more drugs who can lift this so easily..

i have two, and they lifted even more, Stefan Botev 250 kilos and Yuri Zakharevich 252 kilos, and Zakharevich has the best record in snatch 210 at 1988 olympic game

+Player One Keep in mind that Ilya Ilyin is about 10cm shorter than klokov. Klokov could not have any fat in the 105kg class because he is so "tall". If Ilya was 105kg with very low body fat percentage it would mean he had totally insane amount of muscle for his height. Now it's only a little bit insane :D

Keith Greenan he's been training a LOT since then and recently but he is much lighter so his lifts are only like 170/190 OR something around that

Time to re-structure all the categories thanks to all of the current and past lifters in all categories. All records are drug tainted. You probably gotta go back 70 years or more to find no drugs in weightlifting.
