Hey Jehu, love the channel! Long time viewer. I'm a 20 year electrician. The heat you're seeing might be because of insufficient wire size. Baseline rule: 14 awg = 15amp 12 awg = 20amp 10 awg = 30amp 8 awg = 50amp 6 awg = 60amp 4 awg = 75amp 2 awg = 90amp 1 awg = 100amp Also relative to max load only being no more than 80% of awg rating. Also with DC, the square wave doesnt travel as far so it's good to go up a gauge from rated max load size. So I would wire that setup with no less than 8 awg. Also, on the AC side, i doubt your getting proper current for 220v out of that extention chord unless it's a 10awg chord. I would check the max amperage rating on your lift. I do realize this was just a test btw. Thanks for posting these types of tests for many years now. You have tought me so much over the years about battery chemistry

Those are good numbers with respect to limiting conductor overheating. Depending on wire length, and the voltage being supplied and the current being drawn, and the ventilation available to the conductors, heavier wiring might be called for. Especially if lower voltages are involved with same overall power level (so currents that flow would be higher than with a higher voltage), where the voltage drop of the conductors starts to become a significant percentage of that lower voltage. That’s a big part of why lots of the battery powered tools and equipment are starting at 40V DC or more.
@laymanengineer7502
@laymanengineer7502 4 жыл бұрын
@@stevebabiak6997 yes, my reference was to free air conductors. Not in conduit. Also as a power wall with wires not more than about 4 ft. Also based on achieving about 80 volts as he said
@laymanengineer7502
@laymanengineer7502 4 жыл бұрын
@Brock Obama yes, in undersized conductors, heat is wasted energy. With better conductors, He would have achieved higher voltage (less volt sag) which translates into lower amperage under load. I think 8 awg would have been sufficient as he was only pulling about 32 amps

I have a similar setup for couple months. I use two 10s automotive lithium-ion batterys in series, witch I use from 64v to 80v. These inverter has a beautiful feature - You can adjust in the menu how much current you want to draw from the battery. You can adjust low voltage turn off value, to prevent overdischarge... The inverter can continuously deliver 1800W but if it runs from the battery the power runs down to approximately 1300-1400W when voltage drop to bottom (64V in my setup). But 1400W is still good enough for transfer energy from battery to my E-UP when EVSE charger set pilot signal to 6A charging.

Another item of interest concerning the amperage for gauge wire used and the posting for the current rating. If it is stranded copper it can handle more current than solid wire. FYI.

This is nice. If they can can be tethered for 8kw on the inverters that will be great and with a 11kw solar there will be 4kw left over to charge up the battery powerwall. It would be nice if these grid tie too.

I'm wondering how these will work in limited mode on a split phase house like most in the US. You would need 2 clamps to avoid back feeding and have the software able to limit both legs individually.

@ahaveland
@ahaveland 4 жыл бұрын
If you want to use lithium, then only LiFePO₄ batteries have the appropriate voltage range and current supply of over 400A. With 18650s you would need hundreds of laptop cells to supply that current, and the voltage range of 3S and 4S packs don't cover the full 11-14V of a LA battery. Max for 3S is 12.6V, minimum for 4S is about 12V. You may be able to crank an engine with a fully charged 3S100P pack, but will overcharge it if the alternator runs.

I really hate when someone who supposedly knows their shit proclaims there might be “sparks/smoke”. It shows that you’re really just winging it and are hoping for the best outcome. Regardless, you will end up killing someone one of these days with all this bullshit. I appreciate you trying to test these battery backup systems and trying to show everyone how to build one, but the current in these systems are deadly and nothing to joke about. People are building these systems following your setup/mistakes and someone will need up doing something terribly wrong and end up burning down their home at best and at worst killing everyone in their household/neighborhood. Battery fires can really get out of control fast because of the high energy density in those packs and all the noxious fumes that are released when those batteries burn, this is deadly serious stuff.
