I grew up playing chess in the 90’s in tournaments with Emory Tate. I remember at a Glendale, Indiana tournament he was drinking between rounds. I also remember him with his two sons (turned out to be the Andrew Tate everyone knows today) having a chat before a tournament shortly after. The world is a small place sometimes.

So in that sense he is one of the best players in the "world". But professionally speaking he barely cracked the top 2000. If 2,000 players are better than you in your field, I wouldn't really say you're one of the best. GM's occupy that category
