I met Emory Tate and Yasser Seirawan at the 1994 Indiana State Chess Association Class Championships in South Bend, IN. I won the Class D title that year, scoring 3.5 out of 4, drawing the last game. Emory won the Masters Division.

As someone that’s from Indianapolis I can tell you that for the last 40 years, the city planning is centered solely around hosting conventions. If you want to have a convention, Indianapolis is the best city. If you’re there for any other reason, besides the Indianapolis 500, oops.

Driving through Indianapolis really makes you wonder if life is supposed to be this bland and boring. Every street is a reminder that people so colorless that they should be rather called ghosts live and work in such a meaningless place. Shadows of life. Mere survival of vast emptiness lost in a place that feels like it belongs to a, rightfully so, forgotten world.
