“Cry Baby”. Janis had the ability to sing two notes at the same time (polyphonic overtone singing) and it is quite evident in the opening note in her banger “Cry Baby”. A must see! ❤

Hope someone has already pointed out that this song, which has been covered by dozens of artist, was written by George Gershwin in 1934(!) for his groundbreaking musical "Porgy and Bess."

A bit of trivia. The premier production of P&B was Sep. 30, 1935, with Todd Duncan as Porgy. 1955, Todd would be the 1st to sing Unchained Melody (in the 1955 movie, Unchained).

Loved Ira & George Gershwin. "Rhapsody in Blue" probably a favorite. George died in the 30s but Ira kept going...didn't know this song was that old, probably knew at some point, but thanks for the info/trivia!! Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, etc. Love the old Hollywood musicals and the Gershwins as composers.

"Piece of My Heart" was Janis's first hit, and must be her best seller. "Me and Bobbiy McGee" was another big one. In the second case, it's interesting to see what she did with a country song. Much of her popularity, as with many "psychedelic" musicians of the time, was due to albums rather than singles

The saddest story I heard was about Janis Joplin being bullied in High School. So she decided to change her life and become a big rock star. She went back to her High School Reunion, and the people who used to ignore her... Still ignored her. It didn't play out the way she imagined. They treated her like dirt when she was a student, and they still treated her like dirt during the reunion. RIP Janis.

Yeah, she took two boyfriends with her to the reunion to stick it in her old classmates' eyes. Turns out they were so provincial they didn't know she was a star. Port Arthur still doesn't accept her.

I went to Woodstock 1969, yes I'm that old. My friend and I managed to sneak up onstage (it's a long story) while Sly and the Family Stone was performing. The stage was huge and other performers were dancing to Sly including Janis. I looked around and was shocked when I saw her right next to me. She offered me a sip of her Southern Comfort, her favorite drink. That moment was the highlight of my life. I love her so much, my all time favorite. I'm lucky that I grew up with the best music and went to lots of concerts and saw so many of the greats.

I used to drink SoCo & Lime...co-workers at a hi-tec company, I was the assistant basically, tried to drink me under the table without telling me - just buying - and that was a night where I could just not them back...they gave up and told me what they'd been trying to do. Ha ha. My first concert was Dokken and Dio, I think...born in '69. Seems like Monterey was better than Woodstock but they always talk about Woodstock. Memories, huh?
@doloresdrew8023
@doloresdrew8023 Жыл бұрын
@@KellyKellyKellyKellyKellyKellymost of the bands that were at Monterey were also at Woodstock. It wasn't just about the music, which was great, it was the whole experience. Five hundred thousand people there with no violence and all taking care of each other and having a great time. The reason Woodstock is more famous is because it was a once in a lifetime experience and I'll never forget that feeling as long as I live.
@KellyKellyKellyKellyKellyKelly

@@doloresdrew8023 I thought that just some bands were different but the "bad acid" and "mud" looked unpleasant. Yeah, I know it was once in a lifetime because the 2nd Woodstock "appeared" to me to kinda suck - wasn't there. I remember, the "Chili Peppers" or "Limp Bizkit (?)" telling girls to throw dirty tampons onto the stage. Yuck.
@doloresdrew8023
@doloresdrew8023 Жыл бұрын
@@KellyKellyKellyKellyKellyKelly I wasn't at the second Woodstock either. But from what I've seen it was pretty bad. They tried to recreate something that was unique to the culture of that time. That was impossible thirty years later. I can't explain the feeling but the mud was just part of the experience and didn't bother anyone. I didn't take any bad acid or any acid at all, so I can't speak to that.

My favourite female singer. But I can’t listen to ANYTHING by her without tearing up or crying a bit. Her vocals were so true and primal, her life story is so sad, and she was lost to us so early. I first heard her sing when they played a bit of Piece of My Heart on the news the day she died, and just that little snippet electrified me, and I was barely 11 years old. God bless and keep her. My suggestion for a song is A Woman Left Lonely, but only after Piece of My Heart, Cry Baby or Try.

Bright blessings to you ADogg for honoring er a lady who, along with Bessie Smith, is quite possibly the greatest blues singer to have lived. Bringing her music back, is a wonderful gift especially for those like you who are influencers. In terms of Summertime, that gorgeous Gershwin number, is not sung often by pop singers, there is another rendition of it that I heard Prince play on the piano . Everything that Prince did was excellent, but like Janis, he was one of few to attempt it. I wonder how serious pianists would have reviewed it. He could have been a jazz star, so much good music gets buried when time passes. One song that was a Janis masterpiece, was called Piece of my Heart, I think you will love its wildness. Janis was not for the timid at heart. She would not have minded Trump using her recordings. Hell, she would have sung at a rally for free.

When I was thirteen, I saw her walking down the street in SF. A highlight for a teenager. Never got to see her sing. A regret.

Enjoyed all of your reactions to songs by Janis, so thanks for that. She was fabulous and it's really sad that she was gone at such a young age. Also enjoyed your reactions to Led Zeppelin but it's too bad you quit listening to them, especially since you like blues. LZ was a blues rock band at their core but you didn't give any of their blues tunes a listen. If you're interested, give a listen to You Shook Me, I Can't Quit You Baby, How Many More Times, Bring it On Home, Baby Come on Home. I think you'll enjoy them a lot. Edit: Subbed to hear what else you'll be reacting to. :)
