I think it is the sad world we live in that people think it is ok to critique every small thing someone does wrong. This dogs behavior changed and that is all that matters. He got to stay with the family he loves and love him because he was getting better trained. It is so hard as a pet owner to decide what is right for my dog when I see so much conflict in the politics of the dog training world. It is something I love about this channel that it does not bring others down by showing clips and critiquing them when they were not there in the moment the issue happened.

Here to second this - after speaking with Tom regarding my dog Roux and then implementing the training we discussed, of COURSE he was stressed at first. And now he actually can ENJOY being a dog and getting to go places and having more freedom and choice because he knows the rules of engagement and is so happy that I am actually leading him now and removing the anxiety of "what do I do" from him in stressful situations.

I love Tom's realistic expectations. "What is the success rate?" Answer: "That's the wrong question/mentality." "Why isn't it working at home after the first couple days?" Answer: "It takes time for you as a handler to learn and for your dog to understand things they've never been taught." I hope this family built some skills because it seems they went in looking for a quick fix like most busy families. The mom's insistence to two-handing the leash was very interesting. I hope Mom gains some confidence too. Beautiful dog, great work.

It's quite telling that it was the mum who asked that question. She wants the dog 'fixed', like she could get a car fixed and then it's done and good to go. It does not work like that with a living creature. I hope she now understands that training does not stop when you leave class, or even after a few weeks at home. It's al life-long thing.

Tom, you constantly and consistently amaze me. My children have learned to read dog body language and I specifically ask them to watch you!!! My 18 year old daughter, who was viscously attacked by our English Mastiff in November, recently started working at a doggy daycare & is more in tune with behavior than all of the other workers b/c of the valuable lessons you teach us. GSDs are so smart and trainable. I think Tom gets fast results because he has a fresh relationship with the dog and the dog quickly figures out that Tom will treat them fairly and give clear communication so they decide hey! I like this guy! Whereas the existing family has to work extra hard to reset and rebuild their relationship with the dog

Sometimes you get frustrated because you want improvement so fast, but you are missing that you have already come a long way and things improved already. If I look where I was with my dog 1 year ago ... we did so much improvement. But there is always stuff to work on and you get frustrated so easily. Take a depp breath and be proud of the things you accomplish.

And a lot of people really don’t understand that German shepherds are a working dog. They are just like the Belgian malinois they have an intense prey drive and an incredible drive-in general. They should not be pets in my opinion unless you’re getting a temperament tested low drive, German shepherd that would be good for average pet home. People like this they get a GSD just because it looks cool, they get it overweight, then it develops issues like this because it’s not worked. People preach so much that Belgian Malinois can’t be pets but nobody ever considers that German Shepherd‘s shouldn’t be pets either. They need to be working dogs to be completely happy but of course if you have a low drive, German Shepherd they will be happy with daily 30 minute to 2 hours of exercise. My German Shepherd is not a pet and she gets six hours exercise a day because she needs it

I’ve watched you grow as a person and as a trainer and it’s been amazing! I LOVE seeing trainers care so deeply about their clients both dog and human. It’s (I’d say) 99.9% human error and mistakes when dogs act this way. As a trainer we train humans more than dogs. Humans can be so much more complicated and stuck in their ways because it’s all they’ve known. Dogs seek the guidance and structure. Once they’re shown that structure they absolutely thrive and absorb it like a sponge and melt in your hands in relief. Beautifully done!

I’ve never seen a single animal, dog or horse, not be stressed the first time the behaviors are corrected. All you’re doing is replacing one behavior with another healthier behavior. Generally the behavior you want to correct doesn’t actually have any benefit for the dog, it might even cause more stress or destruction (chewing digging) - but when you correct the dog and redirect that energy to something productive or comforting, slowly that dog gains the tools to deal with his own stress. It only seems like the dog is getting more stressed during the initial correction because that’s all the dog has ever known and changing habits can be stressful. Changing them to good habits teaches the dog to self comfort and destress at the same time. It’s just so valuable. You should always always always work with a trainer for higher risk behaviors.

Frustration is a real struggle when dealing with a strong willed dog, but patience and practice will get you to where you want to be. I struggled at first when training with my dog, but with daily training he is a completely different dog to walk and I love it. We aren’t close to perfect by any means but we improve daily. I just love how positive he is with every single person. No matter how bad they are, how delusional, how many crazy things they've done before coming to him, and even how little progress they make in the session... he always mentions the positives that they are doing or have done. Anyone who has tried dog training knows the hardest thing is the owners. The dogs are easy and will follow what you say and love it.. It is the owners that mess up, don't listen, have bad attitude etc...

The mom doesn't have a lot of patience, sorry to say it like that but it shows. Growing up in a house without dogs is no excuse, I grew up in a house without dogs and we got our puppy during COVID from a high-kill shelter. Yes it was difficult and i will be honest somedays you don't feel like you are making any progress. But you keep at it and one day the dog will follow every command you give. It also is a moment of joy and pride to see your dog transform into the vision you had for them. It's exactly like Tom said "They don't know what you want...you have to show them". I have learned a lot from his videos and i will continue to do so. Thank you Tom for all you do.

SORRY but that mentality is why she wanted to get rid of the dog in my opinion. Dogs will do what you want them to if you let them know EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT ! While people may feel uncomfortable watching a dog being totally stressed it's way better than that dog paying with its life for something it didn't know what they wanted from it . the dog was feeding off the owners vibe, lack of structure and lack of leadership. GSD's are so smart and powerful, they need a leader or they will take over. Bless you Tom for all that you do, including dealing with tough clients who are stuck in ego of wanting to have it all figured out. A lot of us have been there. We have to get out of the way, breathe and be humble. Animals and our pets deserve it.

Buzz's body language and panting when stressed reminds me so much of my super reactive mutt Mia during difficult training sessions. I have also felt intense frustration at times, just like this owner. I constantly have to remind myself that the biggest variable that slows down my dog's progress is me. His stress is like a child going off to schol for the first time - many times parent(s) are just as stressed as child. Usually by the end of day or week, it becomes 'no biggie'. Similar with training, I think. With structure, guidance, and being consistant usually stress levels on both 2 legged n 4 legged starts to ease up. Good on this family trying to make a difference.

He's definitely just an anxious reactive dog. I work in a dog kennel, and I see shepherds like this all the time. Reminds me a lot of this shepherd, Hans, I work with. Very obedient, but loud and snappy around his owners, turns his anxiety into handler guarding. Needs to be told exactly what he's doing otherwise he doesn't grasp it

Fantastic video, Tom! Their dog needs to lose about 30 lbs. He is overweight and the weight will be hard on his joints. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. The owner "must" train their dog every single day and walk him at least twice a day, because I don't feel the owners are able to handle him without consistency! The owners appear to be overweight, too, and I am not sure they are willing to keep up with their high energy GSD. As you know, a GSD is not for a sedentary lifestyle. They need exercise, playtime and training every day. They need a job. I will pray that the owners will adjust their lives so they can give their dog the time he requires. A GSD is not for a couch potato. 😱 A GSD is not a lap dog. It is a powerful and high energy dog. I hope the owners make the commitment to spend the time it takes to help the dog find joy in his life and don't abandon him without trying.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

That mother was too much. I completely understand she’s upset at herself more then anything because she wants a dog who just does what she says and she wants to not make ANY changes to how SHE thinks it’s to be done. HOWEVER her dog needs are completely different and she being the human owner needs to step up to the plate and learn how to be with her dog. Take some accountability for her own actions. Some responsibility for her life choices would be nice. She needs to learn not the dog. The dog caught on very quickly. It was obvious to me she was the problem as to why the dog wasn’t listening to her. It’s because as we all saw she was doing it ALL WRONG. She is a grown adult and she needs to put her ego aside and LEARN how to handle her dog PROPERLY. That’s a beautiful dog right there and he loves his family. Thankfully he can’t understand that she was just talking about abandoning him. I have a lot of respect for this dog trainer, how he can sit there hearing that BULLCRAP from her after not following his instructions to THEN blame the DOG!! For HER errors!!! Such love in your heart man for those animals. Thank you for helping so many dogs live much happier and let’s face it, much safer lives when their humans are more knowledgeable on how to handle them. 🙏🙏🙏

I think this situation is more complicated. She never wanted the dog, and the husband should have respected that. Now it's a big mess. German Shepherd ain't a goldfish, they're a lot of work. Bad breed for this family.

The daughter really will be the driving force behind this dogs rehabilitation, they way she listened and handled him was amazing. The mother tho really got on my nerves. I must say a dog is for life and you should be aware of the monumental task that is required with some dogs. Great video

That woman need to relax a little bit :) She transfers that anxious energy to a dog and all together are falling in a circle of frustration :) Buzz won't listen,because her "sit" and "heel" don't sound like she means it. She has no authority over him. He feels that tension in her,so emotionally unstable person who can't control dog,usually puts all the blame to a poor animal,which in end finishes in cell,2 with 2m2 :) I wont say that it is always the case. There are absolutly dogs who are damaged by genetics,so its not always the owners fault,but in this case,Tom,you showed how can be done.That dog with you is in the paradise :) Also i noticed that girl,who is she? is she a daughter of that couple? She knows the stuff man,and dog is better with her,so much. :) Greetings for your patience and love which you have for animals :)

I don't think he's aggressive. I think he's stressed, unsure what's expected of him, and fretting. This has been really helpful. I adopted a young dog 2 months ago who is very sweet and will follow the basic commands but is wary of all and exposed to little. While she's a great little dog, my focus to date has been letting her know she can trust me, that she's safe, and that I will advocate for her. Her confidence is growing but I have struggled with her remaining in place following a command until released. It was important to me that she doesn't rush the door if someone visits, So we have worked on that from day one and she will sit/lay on comment when I answer the door but then if I talk too long, she sneaks forward until she's at the door to see who it is. (Doesn't jump or bark but my fear is she'll run out). I'll try adding in a release word which I haven't been doing. I totally understand it's my lack of experience at giving her clear direction of when to go vs her thinking she's waited long enough.

The way the mother just gave up on him broke my heart. It’s so sad to hear sometimes when people give up on their pet. It’s never the pets fault it how the owners make it work. If u have an attitude like “ oh I got this we can make it work” good things will happen. But if u have a loosing attitude it doesn’t work.

Being a GSD owner I really like this dog. I can imagine how much energy he’s not getting to expend if they wouldn’t walk him not to mention how bored he would be.. I’m glad they’re getting him help. He’s beautiful.

The mom is scared of their dog. Her fear of XYZ is only causing more stress and not opening herself to the idea that she can be a good handler herself. The daughters did great with him. If the dog senses that you feel nervous, uncomfortable with them, then they're not going to listen to you and do as they please.

As a family, they have to learn, know and make the same things about Buzz, wich is almost imposible in a family of five. You are absolutely right: the dog doesn't know what to do with the lady, because she doesn't know how to do it even some times Buzz is looking for someone like he was saying: somebody help me please and some times he is shaking from the ears to the tail. Any way is another case of succesfull when all of them decide to learn the way to comunicate with Buzz . Congratulations Tom Davis !

Buzz is a great student, and Tom is so precise and patient training both fur baby and handlers! I have a 2 year old male GSD that Has noise phobia, he is coming along very slowly so I understand how difficult it can get especially When you have a large dog that bolts when hearing squeaky brakes ect. Buzz just needs that clear direction Which Tom brought to him. I see a Great dog here! Good luck to the owners you have the tools and Don’t give up you have a beautiful loyal forever friend in Buzz.

Tom, I am very thankful I found your videos. Watching your videos has helped me tremendously with my dog who all of the sudden became aggressive towards my other dog. I cannot thank you enough for posting your videos to educate us who are dog owners. The music is definitely appropriate and in line with the dogs psychy as each human handles him 😑 very confused with mum...arguably just inexperience but there also seems to be a little of hopelessness and the dog checks out mentally instantaneously. I hope all humans can get that communication and leadership tunes right up for this Super intelligent working dog. He needs it!

Sadly like most dogs in my neighborhood, not do enough activity- sadly also overweight - and not his fault, he needs to be physically worked a run in the backyard won't do it, he needs to be out and about similar to my terrier mix rescue over 2 years of work with him with a lot of patience and tuning in with his level and bonding and engaging ....people are the one doing wrong to these beautiful creatures - Thank you for all your videos they taught me more than any dog trainer I ever been with
