There is a young woman / was a young woman with a large black GS at my local walking spot. One day she was pulling into the carpark, me and my dog the only living things around, and all I could see was her dog barking madly between the seats at my dog. She reversed the car and pulled over down the road. I left my dog in the car and went to see if she ok. The side of her face was red and she said she feared he was going to take her ear off. We talked for a bit about training suggestions, but every time I saw her after that she was still being dragged around by her dog who was still wearing a harness. I haven't seen her for some weeks now. I hope she, or someone else, wasn't injured.

@@patrickm7483 I've just recently talked to both a vet tech and a family member about dogs smelling changes in human body chemistry. We smell different, especially during heightened emotions. I know that my anxiety affected (especially) one of my prior dogs and certainly doesn't help my current dog, so I've already asked if we can do vet visits the way we have during the past year, and they were very receptive to the idea. The weirdest thing for me is of I'm dealing with another person's dog or say a dog from a rescue that I'm transporting, I don't get the same anxiety. So my homework right now is taking the time to work through why that changed for me and how to get back to the way I was before, all so that I can be the great guardian my dog needs and deserves.

A bad dog owner does not take their dog to a probably very exspensive dog trainer and spend hours trying to save the dog and other people . A bad dog owner would just get rid of the dog or have it killed . People love to judge others when they are doing something not right in their lives . That's all it is .

I can personally vouch for Tom's behaviour change methods. We fostered a rescue two weeks ago and he is very leash reactive and chokes himself out on the slip. All fear based reactions. I've watched almost every video on the channel and my herm sprenger 2.25 arrived today. I made sure I placed it correctly, secured a safety clip to his flat collar and oh my god. Different dog. He engaged with me, tail wagged and even wanted to play. He watched dogs nearby but didnt growl and looked like he was just interested in his surroundings rather than nose to the ground and thinking of me as a weight to be dragged. I cant wait to help him become a more confident, happy dog. Now if I can just get him to stop going totally bonkers at the doorbell.

Thomas... of all your video content, I would rate this as among the top 5 most important, must watch videos. German Shepherds are a strong breed and can be *lethal* if the owner fails to be an assertive leader. Your patience and the owner’s desire to learn and modify their own body language and energy projection are key to a successful outcome. Responsible dog ownership means learning about critical factors such as dog body language and needs for mental stimulation and exercise.

You have a great presence, clear understanding of canine behavior, and it's obvious you're passionate about your work and helping dogs. Your blunt honesty with the owner without sounding like you're scolding or talking down to her is very helpful and I admire your skills, I think I sometimes get frustrated with the owner if it just isn't sinking in and I that's not helping anyone, it's somethinog I need to work on. As a German Shepherd owner, it’s quite sad to see so many dog owners that get these breeds and have no handle on their dogs. People really need to understand the type of dog they are getting and if they match up to a German Shepherd. This isn’t just a lap dog, it needs full training and not just sit and stay commands. You’re setting up yourself for failure, you’re setting up the dog for failure without understanding your own situation and who you are when getting picking this breed.

It is always usually the owner who causes the dog to act like a royal a******. For me,, It was always harder to train the owner than the dog. I really needed to see this...just last Sunday, my rescued Cane Corso yanked me off of my feet on a walk lunging after someone who was walking by on the other side of the road. She literally knocked the wind out of me, but I had a death grip on that leash knowing full well what she is capable of. I do use a hermspringer prong collar on her but I was totally devastated, and shaken to my core, so I was so angry I called my husband to come get her. I feel like a total failure. My husband keeps telling me that she is too protective of me and that she does not do this with him. We also have an e collar and had her at a trainers for 2 weeks and received a 10 minute training with her when we picked her up. I know now that this is certainly not ideal and was at the very least inadequate training and money wasted. I wish I knew you before we went there. I some how stumbled across your videos and became hooked. You have helped me so much but I have a lot of work to do.....Everything in this video is what I needed to hear and it is ringing in my ears very loudly. Same story here. You're not alone. I've got an enormous half pit half rot that outweighs me by 30 lbs. He loves all humans but if he sees an animal on walks he loses his mind, lunges with everything he's got, becomes explosive and no longer hears or responds to me or my commands. I love in fear that ill have to put him down if he gets ahold of another dog. So for that reason I always tie the leash in a knot around my waist to ensure he can not break free from me. We still go on walks every day but if I see another dog being walked up the way I'll turn us around and avoid the inevitable incident all together. Its all I can do. I wish you the best of luck. Cane Corsos are extra stubborn.

I can always improve myself. I have 3 dogs. Each one has different training needs. I have a lab/german shepard I adopted at 2 years old with major issues. He has more issues then any other dog I've had in my llife. I had to change how I did things with him. Herm springer is the best prong collar I have ever used for training.

I love you, that's weird coming from a stranger I get that. But these videos, your passion to save these owners and rescue these very misunderstood dogs. I can't help but be so thankful and very loving of everything you do. I have a 2 year old German Shep who has allot of nervous/fear aggression ever since I was attacked. Training him and myself has been VERY hard, but your videos KEEP me going and keep me focused on what i want his life to be and not what it is now. He is finally showing a lot of improvement, and I'm feeling a lot more confident walking him again. We both have a LONG way to go, but couldn't be more grateful for your videos. Thank you

it baffles me how people get these extremely reactive breeds that are often bred to bite people, get no training for them and then are shocked when their dog becomes a reactive and aggressive. Especially very intelligent dogs like GSDs which notoriously need strong confident owners. Thank you for helping this dog, too many dogs like this get put down in our line of work because owners are not willing to go the extra mile and pay for training. And props to the owner for taking the criticism so well and sitting down and actually getting help. Because that dog was indeed a walking liability.

"Don't let the dog be in front of you". This! basically for any dog. So valuable and something I learned when I trained with my dog

My GSD will be having her first litter this May, and this is what scares me the most. Even if you find a loving forever home, they create a dangerous dog... Thank God that these people have access to the information that you share.

Awesome job Tom... This is an excellent class in behavior, training etc. I use your tips at the kennel where I volunteer. No talking, treat the dog like a dog, aim for peace. Yes, dogs can be put to sleep for the kind of behavior we see here at first. It's a wonderful feeling to get things under control. When benevolent leadership is in place, you can see the dog visibly relax. Thank you for your work and honesty! And bless the owner for taking your advice to heart...

You telling the owners they are the problem, at first, it made me anxious. But, then I realized true communication to the owners is just as important as the communication with the dogs. Your use of all the tools is epic. To see you try things, and if they don't work you work out, you find a way that does. Well done Tom!

Owner was great at listening to you and taking healthy criticism. I have 2 Swiss White shepherds and they definitely need structure. I use the e collar with fine tuning and they try little things to see if I ll correct especially the 8 Month old testing me everyday lol . Smart breed they need mental stimulation not just physical walks . Tom your brilliant how you break everything down ....,I always learn just that little thing more about dogs. Cheers Buddy from down under 🇦🇺👍

AWESOME!! The information about dogs correcting each other is SPOT ON! When one of my sheps has attitude, I reach over grab a handful of cheek and give it a little twist. Straightens it right up. I may be blessed with that reaction from them but I've seen mammas do it and they get an immediate reaction when mamma does it. My male growled at me when he had a chew and I walked by. I stopped when I heard the growl, grabbed his cheek, took the chew and went to the kitchen put the chew in the freezer and never said another word. He didn't expect my reaction, I never said a word. He has NEVER growled at me or any of the other sheps since. Was I hesitant? Oh yeah, but that was way unacceptable and it had to be done. I've been bit before and if he was going to bite, that was the time to have it happen. At home with me. Not out and with a child, another person or another dog. That probably wasn't the best way to handle it, but it worked? Been two years plus and he's never growled at me since over anything he felt he had to guard or protect. Did I handle that wrong, Tom? I guess I got reactive lol

The criticism here is on point. And I don't mean that, mean. It's just awesome to hear a trainer lay it out there and not sugar coat it. Because this is what can cause a life or death situation for the dog, other dogs, and even people.

This is a great video! Your videos have helped me with my leash and boundary aggressive GSD. By watching you videos I have learned timing is very important when it come to corrections. Luna was corrected for lunging at my neighbor and we turned around and went back to the fence and she sat there like a perfect lady. Now if I can just get my husband to stop talking to her in sentences. He doesn’t get that’s why she does nothing he tells her to do.

Best video I've seen of yours. You can tell how passionate you are in what you do. You did not sugar coat anything, you were straight up, genuine and knew if you weren't with her this dog was going to hurt something or someone again. 👏👏👏 thank you for sharing your knowledge and filming your trainings with us💟

Good explanation as to why the beautiful dog isn't listening. It's easy to fall into the habit of treating a dog like a human, but as you say, it means nothing to them and doesn't help them. Most excellent!

Wow! Definitely held my breath for some of this one! So true about talking to the dog, great analogy with if you were speaking another language how frustrating it would be if you don't understand! Props to the owner too! I know how hard it is to realize you are the problem, but I can also say how much better life can be when you put in the work. It's hard work sometimes but absolutely worth it! ☺

I am guilty of babying my 1yr old aussie sitting on my lap, sleeping with me, spoiling her with treats. But as soon as I had her at 4 months I was training and i am still training. the reason I baby her is because I've been so thorough in training (place on command, off, heel, and even off leash.). Dogs are dangerous babies. Show your love by setting boundries. So keep up the good work!! Love your videos.
