When Michael Jordan was drafted, he was considered small, despite having a 6'10" wingspan. The Bulls' management was disappointed because they couldn’t secure a dominant center. At the time, the NBA in the 1980s revolved around big men, who frequently won MVP awards. Building a franchise around a guard like Jordan was uncommon. However, today’s NBA has shifted to a guard-oriented, pace-and-space style of play. So, how did the league transition from a post-up, center-focused game to a faster, more spaced-out style of basketball?

I can't believe you don't mention the impact of illegal defence. You mention zone defence but that was prohibited until the early 2000s. Defenders were not allowed to leave their man if their man was on the weakside above the free throw line. Just look at how the Utah Jazz exploited this to the max by stationing 3 players there who were just watching Malone posting up or Stockton and Malone playing pnr. When illegal defence was gone in the early 2000s team defence evolved and started to overload the strong side, making it way more difficult to post up as now double teams came from the "blind side" of the post players. Offense needed to counter this and the initial (dumb) idea was to isolate more further away from the basket. Don Nelson and Mike D'Antoni were the first coaches to figure out they needed to go pace and space to attack before the team defence was set and/or lure them away from the basket. Orlando with Hedo and Lewis as big forwards that shot a lot of threes were the next step in the evolution (Nowitzki really didn't shoot a lot of threes). Then Miami was the first team to go 5 out with Battier and Bosh. These teams laid the foundations on which the succes of Steph Currys Warriors was build.

Great video! The great Chuck Daly rejected the narrative that his pistons teams were responsible for slowing the pace of the game. He maintained that his were among the league's leaders in points scored. The offensive rating of the pistons in the three seasons Coach Daly lead them to the finals was right on 110. And the pistons were not afraid to run the ball and score in transition. Things went south as the team got older but in their prime the bad boy pistons were an offensive juggernaut.
