I used to do this a lot when starting digital art, making collages from stock photos and painting over them, I had no idea it was a real technique and just felt bad for tracing 😭😭 it's so cool to see a tutorial on the proper and really effective ways to do this!

I suppose they mistake photobashing for tracing, or imagine something as shown at the start of the video - insert a character, insert a bg, then put 3 filters over it; done. ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯

@@ImadAwan It's significantly easier than say .. drawing it from imagination though, which is what a lot of non-art people would assume one did when they see the piece, cut the people some slack :D
@NicolaosSoldal2 жыл бұрын
@@aqua-manlet2540 Significantly easier is a bit of a stretch. Artists use reference materials at all times, the largest portion of work on this stuff is shading and detailing, just like any free hand drawing. But I guess the point of it is, its not "EASY" by any stretch of the imagination. Which is what some people start to think. "Oh I could do that its just tracing" which is certainly not true 99% of the time.

Imo photobashing adds ALOT of components to a painting and often the beginner will get overwhelmed with the complexity and just give up. I like to take out the color and work on it grisaille style and once I'm happy with the composition then I'll reintroduce the color back it and then the lighting and then the finish. This way it's a step by step system that works on the piece one fundamental at a time.

Do you have any method of keeping track of layers? Or do you just create some stuff on a layer, then after a bit create new layer, create some stuff on it, etc. In video I couldn't pick out any pattern in when you created new layers. Some people I can tell they're doing all warm highlighting on single layer, then all hard shadows on a single layer, etc. I'm wanting to learn to do more painting, so curious if you bother keeping up with your layers or if you just toss some stuff down and make layers randomly.
