Image-based barcode reader vs laser scanners

Thought it was interesting you put a big X when Laser B beeped indicating it acquired a scan. It's not like it needs to create an image of the area.

Why do most industries use lasers? even though cmos is more durable and perhaps more precise?

The german laser reader i use would read those codes no problem and with much larger reading field and depth of field can we see some more demanding codes ?
