When I was growing up my dad told me to do good in life . To better myself as a man physically, mentally , and economically . I didn’t pay much attention but driving around in a beat up car and dressing in over sized clothes I realized how badly you get treated by people. People treat you how they see you . Today I can assure you how differently I get treated with how I dress and carry myself . You’d be surprised how much respect I receive from people at restaurants, women, friends etc etc . Doors open for you and people even trust you a lot more . So yes physical appearance does matter a lot . The fellas need to take care of their appearance . Even if it isn’t for anyone but themselves .

When I was in the corporate world, I worked for a company that allowed employees to dress 'casually'. I told my team, I never want to see you in a t-shirt or dressing casually in any form or fashion. My team was always buttoned up, and performed better as a result. When we were in meetings, when my team opened their mouths, they were taken a lot more seriously than someone wearing a t-shirt in the office because they looked and carried the part. Now these same employees are now Directors at larger companies making $150K+ a year. They thank me all the time for the high level of expectations that I instilled in them. Kevin is not steering you wrong. If you think otherwise, you'll continue to be passed over in life.

@@InfamousBlackGuy and I 100% agree. They don’t make you smarter. However, clothes can reinforce a positive image and remove one less barrier to overcome. The main problem is that most people have not reinforced this positivity, credibility, and overall professional presence etc., which would allow them to move freely regardless of how they dress. I would much rather someone master the basics, and slowly remove elements they don’t find “enjoyable” vs. struggling to succeed and not understand what’s holding them back.

I was a construction worker for most of my life I had a gastrointestinal problem that almost killed me I had a surgery after about 2 years that started out now I'm good as new but I'm in sales now instead of construction since my physical condition forced me to learn how to do something else and nobody wants to wrestle plywood for a living given the choice, I never cared at all what clothes I put on six to seven days a week I was wearing clothes that were totally destroyed literally because they were already destroyed and I didn't have to worry about destroying them, now that I'm in an environment where image is extremely important (which is something that I've had to learn through experience) Im basically having to learn how to dress myself all over again, and you have helped me out a lot. I would have never in a million years gotten the idea to pick up a pair of Monk straps on my own but those things are a cornerstone now.

This works in any realm even blue collar. Just this morning at 4 a.m. I walked into a truck stop to get a coffee and a woman who worked in the subway immediately said good morning. Was another black man who got upset and said I've been standing here for five minutes and she hasn't said nothing to me. I asked him if he really wanted to know why she probably hasn't spoken to him. You took the bait and said yeah you tell me. We're both about the same age in our late 40s. I plainly told him that the way you dress commands a certain level of respect... especially from women. He's wearing ill-fitting pants and an oversized Looney Tunes t-shirt with tennis shoes on....

If you breakdown what he’s communicating here, it is consistent with his message until his passing. He spoke to men here, his later message was to men and women. He talks about accepting your outcomes. That was a major theme of his. It’s ok to be average or even below average, just accept the outcomes that come with that. On the other hand, if you want above average outcomes, you must engage in above average behavior (image, work ethic, etc).

Good advice, the guy talking about expensive things is one of those guys who think having a 500$ versace t shirt = they know fashion. I always try to inform people about quality and fabrics. Cause some shirts are sew a different way that makes it better quality, etc. Kevin is exactly right. Just because the shirt is $150 doesn't mean it's high quality. A lot of times with high end brands your paying to be a walking billboard. Not to say don't buy high end, but inspect the quality and fabric and how it fits, compare it to others and then make a decision. Most important is fit, and fabric so that you know your purchase will last a long time as well as fit properly.

Interesting topic. I’m reminded of how my parents used to dress me as a kid. I had plenty of sneakers and sweatsuits but also a lot of cardigans, polos, and button ups. Honestly, this wasn’t at all unique back then (early 80s). I think our community realized how important it was for us to look the part first because society wasn’t going to give us a chance to “audition” otherwise. Sadly, that reality seems to be lost on a lot of our men, who fashion themselves as “entrepreneurs”, entertainers, or influencers who don’t need to conform to a particular dress code. I’m not saying rock tuxedos to the grocery store, but every “adult” man should at least be able to pull a suit or dress slacks out of the closet. There are people who can afford to look however they want. We’re not those people.

The value part is important. I'm fresh out of college, and I used my first check as an engineer to buy some new clothes. I bought a button down, some khakis, a necklace and some T-shirts for about $800. It was the most money I spent on clothes and it was worth every penny.

I do corporate branding and make companies look beautiful to stand out from their competitors all day, but somehow I don't treat myself like the brands I make. After this video I'll be working on that. Thanks Kevin. Some men hear you, actually. New Fan From Africa

Nobody understood a message like this more than black men and women in the 50’s, 60’s, and early 70’s. Their incomes never stopped them from looking presentable at all times. We are long overdue from looking and conducting ourselves as a whole in a way that demands respect.

Exactly and there was more poverty back then than there is now in the black community. But to be fair there wasn’t any hood/urban clothing brands back then so that plays a factor too.

@@southsidesaiyan8641 I don’t have anything against hood and urban brands being successful. Even though I find their prices to be outrageous, it is their right to set those prices. It sets the balance of supply and demand. But I find it crazy and irresponsible to pay that type of money, pretty much giving these clothes and sneaker designers the green light to fleece the customer base that they know can afford the clothes while not affording anything else. I always thought it was crazy when going into a no name convenience store and always see black and white T shirts and tanks. I asked a shop owner one time about it. He said that dudes will come in daily just to have a new clean shirt on 🤦🏾‍♂️.

My dad used to tell me when I first graduated highschool that no matter what to do or where you go, be the best version of yourself you can be. And that included dress code. He couldn’t always afford the finer quality things but he would make a 100 outfit look like 300-400 due both his style and his ability to carry confidence every where he goes. People always thought he was a celebrity. Even his vehicles stayed clean and newer. He works hard to be everything to his family and sacrificed much but that didn’t stop him from being the great man he is. And he had a wife that supported him and did what ever she could to fortify the great man she loves and married over 30 years ago.

God bless my father. He use to take me to his personal tailors. He taught me about the power of clothes fitted suits, shirts, ties and shoes. He use to say even if you wear older clothes make sure you wear beautiful a pair leather shoes as people look down them up at you. He taught me to pay for expensive not cheap clothes. I wear tailored shirts and cufflinks. When I wear my tweeds and waistcoats I always get comments from strangers and neighbours. Women know what time it is when I dress up and smell good.

Couldn’t agree more on value versus cost. I bought a pair of Chelsea boots paid $60 for them, they had leather soles etc in three months the leather was cracking, the heel was coming off... Per month of use they are probably the most expensive pair of shoes I’ve ever owned. With few exceptions (like watches) brand names should be taken on face value...

This is good life advice. Go watch any nature documentaries on Discovery Channel to understand this concept. Life on this planet is a warzone and you need to wear camouflage to survive. I really despise the current culture of victimhood instead of educating someone about reality and how you can use it to your advantage. People don't want to hear it but it's their loss.

Kevin, this video should be watched by every man on the planet. Hot fire, brilliance! I try to explain the concept of value to many, they don't get it. "What's your budget? How much do you want to spend?" Value! I'm looking for value! I'm fine with a $200 t-shirt if it lasts, fits, and most importantly makes me feel good.... like Tobacco Oud and Grey Vetiver do :)

Sir, I’m a born again Christian, and I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has a purpose for all of us who God created. I believe that our purpose is tied to the building of God’s Kingdom on earth. What I am learning from you is how I carry myself and the image I reflect to the natural world can impact my future on a daily basis. If God created me with the purpose to create a business and thrive so that I can in turn help finance the work of the Kingdom and the Word, if I don’t do what I must do as a man to improve my self, my network, and my value, I may never fulfill what God created me to be and accomplish. Sir, I’m grateful for your knowledge, experience, and wisdom that you share as a teacher. To all the lion cubs who want to challenge a King Lion in his domain, to want to encroach and rule in his kingdom, you’re disrespectful and out of order. If you don’t like what the man has to offer, simply leave. We don’t need to disrespect a leader on his grind making the effort to help others like myself realize my full potential as a man. God bless you Mr. Samuels and continue teaching!!! You are definitely on your purpose!
