See how Birgit Koopsen creates image transfers on the Gelli Arts® Gel Printing Plate using Copic markers!
Birgit places her gel printing plate on top of an image and starts to trace the image with a Copic marker. She uses a variety of colors and takes her time. Birgit allows the markers to dry thoroughly. She then applies a thin layer of acrylic paint on top of the drawing, places paper on top, rubs firmly, and then carefully pulls the print.

This is awesome! Do you have to use alcohol markers or can you outline in a water based marker?

You can use water based markers on the plate but as they are water soluble you can not add a layer of paint on top as the would reactivate and smear, so you have to print while the ink is still wet.

I tried this, using Copic markers, doing it exactly as demonstrated, and the trace did not print. Now my Gelli plate has a drawing on it in Copic ink and I can't get it off at all. Soap, baby oil, baby wipes, nothing will remove the Copic ink tracing from the Gelli plate. Can anyone explain what went wrong? This is very frustrating!

Great tutorial, Birgit! Question about when to add the clear gesso: if you're planning to use the water soluble crayons, do you brayer the gesso on the Gelli plate at the very beginning before drawing with the Copic markers OR after pulling the initial print, do you brayer the gesso on the plate, and then place the first pulled print back on the plate to coat the print with the gesso? Thank you so much!

I have read her instructions several times because I was confused as well. From what I understand, she rolled the clear gesso onto the gelli plate and then put the image back onto the plate and pulled it as if it were another print. I imagine it gives it some tooth and allows the crayons to be blended. I'm not 100% sure, so I'll be watching for the correct explanation from Birgit.

I paused the instructions throughout and I believe she indicated gesso step happens AFTER first print pulled off of the magazine image.

Gesso was added after making the print. You could apply it straight to the print but using the gel plate gives you a very nice, thin and even layer of gesso.

Yes, I wasn't clear on that. I meant AFTER she already pulled the first print.

I also do not understand the steps fully....? I re-read over but still unsure if gesso goes on the pulled print or not? If so, couldn't you just brayer the gesso direct to the pulled copic marker print????

Birgit answered above - she said, "Gesso was added after making the print. You could apply it straight to the print but using the gel plate gives you a very nice, thin and even layer of gesso." Hope that helps :)
