Hello. Nuclear engineer here. TLDR: No. Just, no. First off, I would like to remind you that the whole Chernobyl incident was the result of soviet technology and safety regulations intentionally removed, just to see what would happen. Despite popular belief, there was no actual explosion, and the other four reactors in the facility remained IN USE until 2006 when a more advanced plant was constructed. Secondly nuclear energy is NOT as popular belief would suggest a controlled explosion but simply an adaptation of the steam engine replacing energy dense slugs for coal. Third, and most importantly (seriously I cannot stress this enough) there are MANY many many redundant safety measures in place to ensure that there is no contamination due to meltdown. In the entire history of nuclear power there have been 58 fatalities due to radiation leak, or meltdown. 54 of which were Chernobyl, three of which where due to the earthquake in Japan. as compared to the 100 + coal miners who die underground every year worldwide. As compared to the 80+ individuals who die every year due to petrol related explosions. Nuclear power is clean, efficient (7300000 times as fuel dense as gas) and surprisingly enough, renewable. If people would stop being afraid of the technology and embraced it, the "energy crisis" could have been solved before the 90's.
