I was in his maps of meaning class. His lectures always start interesting and thought provoking, but the guy just went on and on for 2 hours. No knock on him. If anything it shows that he’s dedicated a lifetime thinking about these things. Regardless, as a prof he wasn’t the best at keeping the class engaged in that way. When he speaks about seeing yourself as a guard I had to pause the video and think upon it for a moment, and I finally understand what he meant. When humans are able to convince themselves that what they are doing is right and good, everything can become evil in their eyes. And when I saw myself as that guard, I could feel the lack of remorse I'd have for those Jews because in this thought, my mind went to "they are criminals who are trying to destroy our great country so of course the deserve the worst fates". And now I see that I can be a evil human being too. Thank you Professor.

I'm not sure I would be thinking as you describe, if I were in that situation. For the purpose of the question, I assume that that camp guard was "me" as I am now, and not as a young person with a decade's Nazi indoctrination behind me. It horrifies me to say this but, faced with that massive military machine and the fate of dissenters, my moral resolve would leave me and I expect that I would be thinking ... "better them than me." I think that may be Dr Peterson's point.

In Krav Maga classes my instructor used to run weekend self defense courses for the general public, and sometimes we (his regular students) would help out. It is quite surprising how many people find it hard to be aggressive and carry out the techniques or spa properly and actually hit their partner, even in a controlled environment using gloves and padding etc. It was quite common to have to remind people to really punch us, or actually try to strangle us (so you can use the defense technique correctly). Sometimes, as part of that class, the instructor would put on full body armour and would get everyone in the room to take turns to attack him as hard as they could so they could experience that true aggression and know what it takes to repel a real attacker. One time we asked him if there was ever anyone who didn’t attack him and he replied : “No, there is always a button that you can push which will get the person to attack, no matter how peaceful the person thinks they are.” This was backed up by observing friends and family - no matter how much of a pacifist a person was or claimed to be, there was always at least one subject which would get the mist descending. If others can find a way to manipulate those feelings, then undoubtedly they could get the person to act in a way they thought “justifiable”, yet completely misguided. And if anyone thinks “not me”, just watch a news article about a sadistic pedophile torturer, and then say you don’t feel the rage, that if someone pointed out the alleged perpetrator in front of you and said that they were targeting your family, you wouldn’t want to exact “justice”. Then imagine after exacting said “justice”, you were informed it was the wrong guy - mistaken identity.

Sounds like you had a good instructor. I taught self defence for 10 years and getting into people's minds, for them to realise there was a beast inside that they could (and should!) access given the appropriate circumstances, was sometimes the hardest but always the most rewarding part.

My goodness this is just super! I am a Christian man (or trying to be!) and the essence of the Christian religion as I understand it is to acknowledge that we are all in need of forgiveness. This requires an acceptance that we are capable (all of us) of evil. In this brief extract I understand this postion better. I have frequently thought of myself as a "good" person. How can I have been so stupid!

One of the most important and misunderstood part of the scriptures is the part where the woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus and they question whether or not she should be stoned. At first he doesn't answer but then he proposes the challenge of "he who is without sin cast the first stone." He was challenging them to look into themselves and admit they were themselves sinners, no different than the woman they were trying to kill. In the end she was saved. One thing I noticed in this story Jesus doesn't throw anything at her either. In another part of scripture someone referred to Jesus as being "good" but Jesus states that only God can be good. Being a good Christian means you have to look at yourself and recognize your flaws and to try to overcome them.

I went to university afte having been to yugoslavia in 93. So in 95 at univ i was appalled sometimes at how simplistic people were having just left highschool to be there. A question was posed about whether or not the class would participate in the atrocity if they had been around at the time of wwII. And i got so upset at this one kids response that noone had to make a choice like that at the time... My first response to anything in the class for weeks because i usually kept my mouth shut. Shook my head. Dafuq? Of course you have to make a choice. You either do it, or risk dying. He said, well thats no choice. And i laughed and said yes it is. That is your only choice at that time. Either join in the slaughter or join in the grave or similar words. Having talked to people in similar choices in yugo i knew what choice the people i spoke to had made...because they werent found buried in a mass grave.

One guy hadn't been paid in 6 mos. But he was happy to be there. Still looking to fight. Just came walking up to us to chat. Accepted us. And then went back into the dark. I suppose if a person just kept their mouths shut and let others do what they will without trying to stop them you wouldn't have to join in, just allow it. And then live with that.

I have 4 children. When they were young- 3, 4,6 and 7- we had a group photo made. When I see that picture nearly 30 years later I am struck by what an Aryan family we would have been. They are all blond-haired and blue-eyed, as is my wife. I am less blond but have the so-called Aryan features and whatnot. That isn't strange, as my last name is Wolf and my family had contact with relatives in Germany until the start of the war. But I look at that picture and I wonder what I would have done during the war had we been a German family. I try to imagine a sort of Sophie Scholl or at least an Oscar Shindler but I think, would I have jeopardized my family? No, I would have joined some government agency and hoped to gain honorary SS membership, as that was the fast track to success. I would have worn my uniform proudly, parading Hugo Boss like a Nazi runway model. Too bad about all the horrible stuff going on to other people. Sucks to be them.

In all fairness I have to agree. I can't say that if I lived in that time that I'd be any better than the people who ended up before war crime tribunals. We'd either follow orders because it how we are or else we believe whatever it was we were indoctrinated with. Remembering the movie Apocalypse Now, the scary thing about Colonel Kurtz isn't that he's psychotic, but how he recognizes how capable he is of doing evil by suspending his fear of judgement. In the part where he talks about the "pile of little arms" he recognizes that the Viet Cong who cut off the arms of inoculated children weren't monsters but men like him who were capable of love just able to suspend their fear of judgement.

Yes. People who deny that they have any negativity or darkness in them are completely delusional and hysterical. That is just as harmful as thinking you wouldn’t harm anyone because you live in a false reality and when some event where you need to act takes place the aftermath can be very detrimental to your future psyche and way of handling stressful situations

Is it though ? Having capacity for evil is the only thing that enables people to be virtuous. We are capable of wreaking havoc on the world, of making it a whole lot more miserable, but most of us don't. Most of us try to alleviate that suffering, by carrying our burdens voluntarily.

The full spectrum of malevolence is not known by anyone... How does one define a pure EVILNESS... Humane decisions are made for the good in an instant sometimes hundreds of times per any given day/week... Humanity and good often are the most prevalent in individuals but one small mistake can ruin a life... common, now. There needs to be a better check and balance scale in society. After 20 years of living and almost completing college (20 years of good work and good deeds) then BOOM! ONE DUI ruins a life forever... kicked out of college, no more car, jail, not able to get a job, loses family, etc.

I doubt he's denying that. Even Australia had a disgusting 'White Australia Policy' enacted after WW2 to control the 'right' sort of people immigrating as the world took in the war's refugees. Peterson is well aware of the disgusting history all humans share -- kinda the point of this vid.

I worked with German WWII veterans when living in Germany in the 70’s….”I was a man of the times” was a common theme when discussing the war and the years leading up to the war…I see the same parallels with the BLM, Antifa, woke and trans crowds today. When asked how they could support such racist and ridiculous positions fifty years from now they will use the same excuse.

How prophetic is it that he was teaching this in 2017, and the year is 2021 and we are headed that way, with the establishment demonizing at least a 3rd of the population for the crime of not worshiping government and it's mandates. And if nobody stops them, they will stop at nothing. We will see concentration camps the way things are going. (they started in Australia already)

I don’t totally agree. In WW11 we had conscientious objectors as did Germany and as far back as the Roman times there have been conscientious objectors who have chosen to be executed rather than be cruel to fellow humans, Mohammad Ali was asked why he would not be a Vietnam conscript in 1966 his reply was because I ain’t got no quarrel with them. So not everybody has that dark shadow

Only a tiny minority of people are really vicious and those people WANT to kill. Some people are able to do vicious things depending on the circumstances and out of ignorance and it needs not much more viciousness to lead other humans into gas chambers in order to kill them or drop Bombs on a major city to kill only civilians. And there are a lot of people who are against vicious things but they are not brave enough to resist and risk their own freedom, health, and life. And only a tiny minority are exceptional good and brave persons who even risk their own freedom, health, and life to save others. Everyone should be indeed aware that it is up to him/her what type of person he wants to be and what type of party/leader he wants to support.

Imagine you started off with a plan that worked out that a certain section of the population where very disruptive, and you had a dialogue with a section of that community that wanted out, and their own ' homeland' Imagine rounding up the troublesome people ( along with the totally innocent,) and, at first housing them in camps that had their own money, entertainment, physical exercise, AND yes..... postcards to send out. Now imagine a war situation, starvation, (and a few cruel people, some of them professional people, thrown into the equation) ...... Hell there's no need to imagine anything is there ?

The perfect explanation for everything. There are no people who think they're the baddies. A political conflict is not about two sides of which one claims to be on the good and the other on the evil side, it's about two sides arguing which of them actually represents the good. And with escalation comes dehumanization and a mindset of "The end justifies the means." If you're back at pointing fingers, you literally have not understood what human nature and the shadow are actually about.
