Love the FPS podcast but the gaslighting about the series launch is incredible. The launch was horrible, no launch exclusives except a couple mediocre indie titles. Xbox one and 360 had new great games at launch. Along those lines, the average consumer does not care about Phil’s public persona. It’s about must buy games. That is evident in what Nintendo and Sony do, they don’t care about having a person like Phil and they are killing it.

I just wanted to comment and say that THIS is how you have a conversation about what's going on with Xbox at the moment. You brought on a reasonable voice in the Xbox community who isn't calling for pitchforks, who is knowledgeable about the ecosystem and he's bringing up valid concerns that a lot of normal Xbox players are having right now in this weird little time capsule while we wait for the big news next week. Parris is great as always. I also appreciated how you all seemed to empathize with what a normal Xbox player might be feeling. You didn't dismiss what everyone is feeling at the moment. You took a second to put yourself in the shoes of someone who only has an Xbox and didn't say "Why would anyone be upset at more people being able to play games?" This isn't about that. I have all 3 consoles and a PC but I prefer Xbox/PC and there are worries for the future. The unhealthy obsession of some fanboys online has poisoned a lot of the conversation going on. We can all say their behavior is dogshit and needs to be condemned. They need to grow up. They're hurting adult conversations about this stuff. Corporations don't owe us anything. Microsoft will most likely be the 1st to put their games on the other consoles and most people will admit that. Next week will sure be interesting either way! Great podcast. I'm gonna keep listening

Very well said. As someone who used to play primarily on Xbox since Xbox One and recently moved to playing primarily on PS5, I can clearly see why many of Xbox owners would feel uncertain or even worried. I may be extremely happy playing my games on PS5 now and in the future, but I don't want my Xbox digital library become the sole reason I turn on my Xbox console. MS will do what is best for them as a corporation, but I am hoping Phil has not lost all his influence there yet and can still offer a solution with Xbox gamers in mind.

40:30 thank you Ralph for saying what I've been screaming into the abyss since that Kinda Funny interview. This industry lives and dies by the GAMES, regardless of how you obtain them, how you pay for them, and how many teraflops you use when you're playing them. It's incredibly frustrating to hear Phil saying that great games won't change their situation, because great games changed Sega with the Dreamcast, they changed Nintendo's situation with the Switch, they changed Sony with PS4, and they defined the Xbox for two generations. If you can be the "third place" that buys Activision for 70 billion, you can also be the "third place" that invests like crazy in ideas from all the studios you now have, and use those games as an entry point to your platform.
@godminnette28 ай бұрын
I don't know if games changed Nintendo's situation with the Switch. The Switch was sold out everywhere with only one great game for months after launch, and it was a game available for their previous console. Many of the best selling switch games are literally ports of Wii U games, including the best selling Switch game. Interesting hardware and great marketing saved the Switch, alongside a single killer release title. I know many people who got a switch not for the exclusives, but for the portable component for playing games they could play elsewhere; a niche now better served by handheld PCs, sure, but a niche held solely by Nintendo for a while.
@EddieGDXB8 ай бұрын
Exactly. People also forget to compare this to the different streaming services. A lot of people actually pay for more than one like Netflix, Amazon or Disney....so why not just have one? And I attribute that to, not just cause they are cheaper than gaming, but because of their exclusive content
@daringintrovert8 ай бұрын
@@godminnette2 The portable factor and strong third party support was crucial, I agree. But after Breath of the Wild, they had new Mario games. Smash Ultimate and Mario Kart held them for several years. They revived Kirby, and Metroid with Metroid Dread. Metroid Prime 4 is probably a next-gen game at this point, but at least we know that it exists. Nintendo and Playstation are usually good reporting what titles we can expect from them in the upcoming years. I feel that Xbox failed on this during the Xbox One generation, and have just started doing it this gen. I'm personally interested in Hellblade, Indiana Jones, and Avowed.
@godminnette28 ай бұрын
@@daringintrovert Mario Kart was literally a port with the DLC included, Smash 4 was nearly as good of a game as Ultimate (and some would argue was a better game from a competitive standpoint, but that doesn't drive sales), Kirby Star Allies was a poor entry, and Dread wasn't released until long after the Switch was an incredibly success, so it's not relevant here. The Switch was a success even when it was just a Breath of the Wild machine with some third party titles; nothing exclusive.
@daringintrovert8 ай бұрын
From what I heard, Kirby and Dread were well received by critics and players alike. My overall point is that platform holders shouldn't ignore making games internally, and selling them on their own hardware, much less claim that it won't change the public perception of their platform. During the Xbox One generation, both Nintendo and Sony did this quite successfully, at least in terms of attracting old and new audiences: if I wanted the new Mario, Zelda, or another Nintendo franchise. I knew what to buy. Same with Uncharted, God of War, Horizon. For Xbox, it was two mediocre Halo games, and Crackdown 3. I hope Indiana Jones and Avowed might start putting Xbox on a similar track to Playstation and Nintendo

There are many, many people with great xbox memories, if great exclusives appeared on the platform many people that have been forced to switch to Playstation would buy an xbox as a 2nd console. I sold my series X after playting the OK Halo Infinite campaign as there was just no system selling games on the platform at all. And even now 3 years later we only have Forza Horizon 5 as the closest thing to a universally loved system selling game. Xbox are 3rd place totally because their games are 3rd place and well below the standard of other platforms.

100%. Competition is great. Hopefully PS gets some one day. Cause Xbox peaked with 360, which launched an entire year before PS3 and still lost out on sales in the end (PS3 stayed in the market a year extra, but let’s be honest, when do more sales happen? The first year of a console, or the last?), and has gone down hill ever since. It’s sucks, but you can’t force people to support them when they release crap like Redfall and Starfield (that one is more polarizing). Personally I would LOVE valve to take another crack at their steam machine console thing. With the success of the steam deck I think people are more ready for valve hardware (as long as they can keep the price reasonable. Which was the problem with the first steam machines).

Great conversation with Paris but I really think you are all underestimating the power of FOMO. If Xbox were to move to timed exclusivity, yes there would be people that just get a PS5 but there would be a lot of people that still get an Xbox or PC so they don't have to wait. You all mentioned 6 month timed exclusivity. I think that's unlikely. I think 1 year is way more likely and that's a long time to wait to play a game you are interested in. I think if Xbox does this, it possibly could be because they've seen the success playstation has had porting to pc. There's a lot of double dipping and Xbox likely sees the value in shipping a game on Xbox/PC and then getting a brand new hype cycle when it comes to Playstation a year later. They'll get more sales via PS and the hype cycle with convert into a sales/engagement via gamepass surge on Xbox and PC as well.

Psychonauts 2, although being an Xbox studios game, is on Playstation. It's a weird one too since it's not really an Xbox original, the first one came out on PS2 etc back in the day and 2 had been in development for a long time before it became an Xbox studio. It's kinda like senuas sacrifice, they've not really developed the idea or the game just bought the rights by buying the studio

I'll tell you why it came to the ps4. It's not out of the goodness of Ms' heart. They did it because they were bound by a contract. Double fine raised money through kickstarter and promised to deliver a ps4 version. When it eventually got bought by MS, they still had to deliver on the promise they made to their investors. Do you want to know how scummy MS is? They made an XSX version but not a PS5 version for psychonauts 2 because they were not required to by law. They could have easily greenlit a ps5 version for goodwill but didn't.

People say to me that smart phones replaced PC's, and to me that's insane. I know X box is cheaper, games are usually optimized there at least, but PC is PC, I will never live without it, so I will never have to buy actual X box. P.S. I have never owned an X-Box but been playing the "exclusive" games as they inevitably come to PC. I have a PS5 I almost regret buying because very little from this generation has sparked my interest and since Sony is also slowly releasing their big titles on PC, I am seeing a future where I don't need to buy a console to play all the games I care about. In the end whatever MS decides to do will likely be a smart move, even if they decided to step out of the hardware business and maybe fold the X-Box service into an app that is platform agnostic. That would make sense with Gamepass and their x-cloud business. The tribal console war bs is really immaterial to the identity of the games or brand if people are being logical. With few exceptions you need to be online if you have a console anyway and if lack of internet was a hurdle, this wouldn't change anything. They would save probably hundreds of billions on hardware development and they are already deep into cloud with Azure, and MS are one of the oldest software devs in history so I feel like it would just be like strength on strength for them. The acquisition of so many studios recently would also just be a broadening of their focus on software development essentially instead of having to gamble every generation on if some rando is going to choose to invest in a PlayStation or Nintendo instead. In the end they will do what their shareholders want them to do and I feel like if the hardware business is a weight on their neck, they will drop it and all the console warriors can suck it. It would be a boon for PS, it would be a boon for Nintendo, and in the end it would probably be a boon for MS.

Problem is game pass, those exclusives that cost a boatload of money to produce dont really see a return of investment because of the day 1 releases on GP, I known they get a monthly fee for it but mind you there are over 100 games on tge service and most of them cost millions to keep on the service, now imagine they release on ps5/switch that would add over 100mil new potential customers and you could keep launching day 1 on GP. Xbox hardware will become the equivalent of an AppleTV box. A small streaming box that allows low price, easy entry for people who don't have or want a PC to game. Xbox is just Game Pass now, and they want you locked to it, online only, not owning any games with Microsoft controlling what is available and when. I've said this since Game Pass first got announced, and the Activision buyout was purely to feed games to it. This is why people who look beyond the 'best deal in gaming' headline realised Game Pass was and is detrimental to the entire industry and everyone blindly supporting it has only made things worse.
