The showrunners changed the way that the fungus spreads so that it would be more believable and terrifying. In the games, the fungus spreads through spores in the air, but in the show, they decided to have them spread through tendrils. Also, when Pedro Pascal found out about getting the role of Joel, he sat down and watched his nephew play the beginning of the game since he wasn’t skilled enough to play it himself. He was so impressed with the character, but he wanted to keep a healthy distance from the games. So, he allowed the showrunners to create the characterization for him.

Cinematically wise: So the actors don’t have to consistently wear masks. Believability wise: Spores don’t stay confided in small spaces, they go wherever the wind takes them. If the infection is caused by spores, there would be no survivors, unless you wore a gas mask 24/7.

Its not that , its the fact you could step on a bit of the tendrils and then all of a sudden a horde of infected will know your exact location and be coming right for you. it isn't, really. First, the spores would be everywhere, not just in confined spaces. Second, everytime the characters would move through areas/buildings with spores they would need to change all their clothes and take an decontamination shower because they would have millions of spores all over their body.

If you did some research on cordyceps that’s what a fungus is long leg looking tentacles that actually move and spread. The fungus infects ants and bugs and grows out of the ants heads with a long tentacle structure. The insides of the ant are slowly eaten away and it’s body is filled with the fungus. In episode 2 when the scientist lady cuts open the dead woman’s leg and it filled with fungus is pretty accurate to what happens to ants and other bugs and insects. So it’s pretty believable.

I agree, I enjoy the show for what it is but a few things are baffling. Bill being dead before Joel and Ellie even arrive, skipping Ellie having to save him from Bills trap. They skipped the dam defense level to get the dam operational. The settlement is already developed. And Joel getting impaled is way weaker in the show and Bella Ramsay’s acting during that part was so stale and emotionally devoid. They haven’t built Ellie’s character at all 7 episodes in she still acts like a child

They change things because video games work differently than tv shows. In the game you kill over 10 people to get to the other level, the action is only there to advance the story. Also in the game you heal bullet holes with alcohol and rags, so Joel falling one story on to a metal spike is more believable. But in the show it’s more grounded in reality. Nobody can kill hundreds of people and heal bullet holes that easily so they skip that and focus on the story

If you watched it wanting to see basically just the game then there would be alot of drawn out parts for a series, parts where Joel should've died, and much more content to try shove in. Bill being dead is just a side story, still making him a good character, Ellie saving Joel from the trap would just be too unbelievable, Joel wouldn't have enough accuracy and would immediately get bit if they want to make it realistic. Trying to get a scenAlso if you're actually saying Ellie hasn't changed throughout the episodes then i know you either haven't been watching properly or are just making things up.

I would say that you can’t directly translate a video game into a TV show especially if it’s for people that don’t play games. I would say that the of the changes made were for the better in contacts that you were making it for a more general audience. As for people who already play the game, I would say, its usually a much nicer experience you don’t know everything that is going to happen. A few new surprises here and there, maybe some character changes, just so they don’t get bored either.

I've never played the game(s) but I have general knowledge from the franchise itself over the years and having watched the series now... So in the game, it's cause of spread is airborne via spores as fungi is. Cinematically, in the series and for the non-fictional adaptation (all legit science though with Cordyceps, etc.) is primal and zombie-esque through biting and how other fungi operate with the use of tendrils and such to attack the host's brain (stem) to create clickers, boaters, etc.

The infection in the game wasnt just spread through spores, since you can obviously get bit. Spores were more of an inconvenience, since you can easily avoid it. Just a few brief tense moments in a dark tunnel is all they would have to put on screen.........

I think the difference I noticed between game Joel and live action Joel is that game Joel is more serious where as live action is a little bit more playful. It wasn’t huge but enough that it was noticeable. (Both are playful but the game has a more serious version of him that shows.)

This was worded poorly,they didn't show the spores since it was hard to get actors expressions to show through a gas mask. they didn't change the way it spreads they adding a extra way it can spread, where as before it was spores and blood contact like a bite or scratch, now having mouth tendrils not only is a way to instantly transfer the fungus directly to the brain, but it gives the infected the advantage of having a hive mind which wasn't present in the games, so you step on live site every infected in the area knows exactly where u are

And fun fact all of that was the original concept for a very long time into development. They didn't change it to spores until a good way through. So all the tendril stuff from the show is just old content from the game that was unvaulted. Pretty sure there's even some acted voice lines mentioning tendrils!

zombie spore idea works for the game. if it was the show people would be complaining about gas masks and why can they breath in tight spaces. my thing is they should have keep the spores but have it like a trap of some kind. like dead bodies get a spore pod that if touch explodes into a puff of spores causing the victim to choke before changing. also they could have add a scanner with beeps to test the air in certain parts which can act like those radiation scanners worked in chernobly but they have the added effect to detect infected. like the more beeps means more enemies.

The cordyceps in the show doesn't spread by tendrils, that's just a way they communicate, in the very first episode is mentioned and implied that the infection first occurred trough grains in the food and then bites
