The Great Dance: At the time of Christ, the Vlachs were shepherds, isolated from everything, living in almost complete self-sufficiency; they occupied the mountains of northern Greece. They were organized into close-knit clans and driven by a great desire to develop.
They acquired new power by becoming Roman citizens, were able to expatriate and adapt to the point of becoming indispensable. They became brewers in Hamburg, jewelers in Vienna, furriers in Budapest, flour millers in Alexandria, financiers in New York, teachers in Athens... without really having lost the spirit of the clan.
“La Grande Danse” is the story of a man who lives today in the montages of his ancestors. Once a year, his village organizes the Great Dance which brings together all the Vlachs, on the evening of August 15, in the highlands of Samarina.
