Mopar Connection's barn find project car, a '70 Plymouth Fury III convertible that we named "Marsha" hasn't been running right for a lot of reasons. We tried a basic rebuild of its factory Carter AFB carburetor, but rusty linkages seized up the secondaries and choked down the engine. So now we're doing a late-night upgrade to get Marsha back on the road while we tend to other repairs and updates.

The annular primary boosters really help the atomization of fuel for better manners in lower rpms I think. I run the AVS2 800 cfm on my street driven 69 Fury III 2 door on a mild 505 stroker and love it 3.23 rear and all. These big gals love the highway.

That is an awesome old Plymouth. Our family, from Grandpa on down, have been Dodge-Plymouth folks since the 60s at least. I'd love to own that Fury droptop.

@@moparconnection I tried running the 800 CFM on it first. Car didn't like it at all. Maybe I could have tried using smaller jets. I did the calculation for CFM and it said 650 would be good up to 6000 rpm. Don't see myself exceeding that often if ever 🤣

Not sure if you're aware or not, but you want to make sure the distributor vacuum advance is hooked up to the port on carburetor that doesn't have vacuum at "hot" idle, but then gets a strong vacuum signal "as soon" as the throttle just begins to open. I.E., going into a port that is drilled in the throat of the carburetor that is just above the throttle blade/butterfly, when the throttle is completely closed and sitting right on the "hot" throttle stop screw, and "NOT" sitting on the cold choke, "high idle"... That way when the engine is completely warmed up, and as soon as you touch the accelerator pedal, the vacuum advance comes in giving you a really good throttle response, and keeping the spark plug nice and clean.
@moparconnection
@moparconnection Жыл бұрын
Great comment! And yes, the vacuum advance is connected to the correct port.

They are essentially the exact same as Carter was bought by Edelbrock and nothing really changed just the name they originally were a Carter AFB then morphed into Edelbrock carbs which work fairly well in the 80s Chrysler actually uses quadrajet carbs which are even better than Edelbrock carbs
@moparconnection
@moparconnection Жыл бұрын
At the beginning, yes. Edelbrock made a succession of upgrades, changes and improvements over the years. The AVS 2 is sufficiently different from our AFB to make a difference.

Too many people buy the Edelbrocks for the wrong reason-they are so shiny. A well tuned early Thermoquad is 10 times better carb than the shiny Edelbrocks.
@moparconnection
@moparconnection 9 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say "better" but I would agree that it's enough for most people's needs. Unfortunately, the Thermoquad is very limited in its fine tuning abilities and as Steve Dulcich says, punishes you for making horsepower. The Edelbrock AVS2 is far superior in tunability and responsiveness, especially for warmed-up engines.
