I’ve been looking forever for a reasonably challenging hands free ear training program, so big thanks for this! 👏 Added bonus is the opportunity to practice my vocal pitch. By singing along, either with the answer or anticipating it

I have a very adept musical ear and can get all of the answers correct without any confusion, but for some reason, I still simply love sitting and listening along. Each interval has its own little character, and hearing them at random is like popping between conversations with friends at a crowded house party. The 1st is naturally the most unmistakable, but after that, the major 3rd always jumps out at me the quickest. It's just so dang warm and vibrant. The 4th sounds like a huge, open sky. The 6th sounds like the most outcasted without being outright dissonant. The 7th sounds like a bumble bee. The 5th sounds like the start of a 5-note descent to the tonic, very deliberate. The 2nd sounds like whistling to yourself in the woods. The flat 6th sounds like some hidden magical place. The sharp 4th sounds like the dinging noise when you leave a car door open. The flat 2nd sounds like something you're really anxious about. The flat 7th sounds like a viking chant. And the flat 3rd sounds very ghostly.

My progress has been crazy! I started 3 weeks ago with just the major scale and was only getting 20% right, now im getting 90% on the chromatic scale - I'm pumped! I had time off between semesters and just obsessed over it and put in tons of time. I've also been playing guitar while keeping a drone going, then trying to sing the interval before playing it back on the guitar, which has been super effective. Even though ive put way more time into major I still find 2 and 4 to be the hardest intervals to get.

can we expect a video for recognizing chords? I'm decent at the major and minor scale degrees as individual notes, but once they're played as chords I feel like I barely know what Im doing.
@maxkonyi3 ай бұрын
I'll be working on that soon. These videos are related to Sonofield, which doesn't deal with chords. I have some good ideas for chord-related stuff though so stay tuned...

10:23 I like the way you say "flat two." It's like even your mind was affected by flat2 as you heard it.
@jorn-jorenjorenson5028Ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Seems a lot more helpful to me, that you stay on the same tonic for some time. The usual ear training apps with intervals starting with a random note always confuse me, because I can't "erase" the previous notes and that often throws me out. I think your approach is way more musical. Will download (buy, I assume) your app as soon as it comes out. : )

After a couple minutes of getting used to the game, I was getting about 75% or more. Not bad. I've still retained something from my college ear training classes after 25 years.

The interesting element utilized here is different registers which is universal considering different music contexts we need to handle music. It also causes me a problem recognizing the intervals compared to a practice where all would be happening within 2 octaves, for instance.

Nice! Do you mean limit the range/register that the degrees play within?
@119FU2 ай бұрын
@@maxkonyi Yes
@maxkonyi2 ай бұрын
@@119FU Currently, no. The point is to train with a wide range of octaves so that you can't rely on pitch. The sooner you can place your focus on what is common to a particular degree regardless of octave, the better.

Your ear training videos have been super helpful! Just curious, is there any reason you label #4 as #4 instead of b5?
@maxkonyi3 ай бұрын
Good question. It's because #4 is much more common in relation to the tonic. It's native to the lydian mode and the chords which come from it. A mode with an actual b5 does not have stability and will give way to some other, more stable tonic. Flat fives do occur often, just not usually in relation to the tonic. For instance, a chord like Bm7b5 (in the key of C), natively contains a b5, not a #4. Also, #4 and b5 actually sound/feel different from each other. They are not interchangeable!

And I thought flat 6 sounded ominous -- flat 2 is even more so! It's the darkest sounding note to me. I know sharp 4 is theoretically the farthest from 1, but it just sounds obnoxious to me rather than ominous (maybe because it reminds me of The Simpsons? lol)
