It is crazy how different the scale degrees 5, 2 and 4 sound/feel compared to Major mode. - Half of the time I immediately recognise the 4 as a dominant sus4 chord that wants to resolve as 4 - 3 - 2 - 3 (with Major 3rd) - but staying in dominant and not wanting to resolve as the leading tone to the tonic 1. - The other time I didn't recognise the 4 at all. I didn't get a wrong answer; there simply was no answer in my head. It requires a lot of humming of many of the notes to verify them. But it's really hard to be able to hum them. Hitting the notes is so strange when there is the drone as the tonal center, even if in interval ear training it is easy to recognise b3 b6 b7 b10 and even b13 b14. But it seems that humming leads to rapid progress. In other words: this exercise seems very effective for me, just what I was waiting for. And I'm looking forward to exercises that include b2 and #4.

Now, some hours later - initially with headphones, meanwhile with built-in speaker of the tablet - it's getting faster and faster. 90% correct within the given time, many immediately. Some hesitant. Some high-pitched notes wrong, so I repeat each of them several times after its predecessor to get to know them better.

@mrquick67754 ай бұрын
This is a muscle memory issue, hand ear coordination problem. Most people don’t realize that playing by ear requires more than just your ears. It’s actually two steps: A. What your ears hear B. Being able too find and knowing where the notes are at on your instrument. These are two separate skill sets and there is also a third step involved but it comes later.. Go check out Corey Henrys muscle memory exercises here on YT!

In actual music, there are many factors coming together which make things more difficult. In particular, having changing harmony/chords means that you might hear a note as being relative to the current chord instead of relative to the key. Start by hearing the melody, pausing the music, singing it back and slowly working out the scale degrees by feeling like with a drone. Once you get the right answer, listen again to the music with that knowledge in mind and keep track of the degrees. Repeat this and you'll find it becomes easier.

If we use the playback speed feature to slow these videos down, will it negatively impact the sound and therefore hamper the effectiveness of this exercise? I'm under the impression when you slow down or speed up sounds it can change the pitch or quality of the sound? Id like to slow it down to give myself for time to recognize the sounds.
@spacecash97212 ай бұрын
Maybe I did too much interval training in the past but when I hear say b3 for example, I count down in the scale "b3 - 2 - 1" or a b6 I will count up "b6-b7-1." This happens quite quickly like in the time in takes for you to reveal the answer so it works here. However with a real song I struggle a lot, is this perhaps because I'm not focusing on the FEELING as much as relying on that quick method of figuring the interval? Or is this an ok way and I will just get faster to the point it doesn't really matter and the feeling will take precedent? I hope that makes sense. THANKS for all you do it's been amazing. Can't wait for the app.
@bigalbbq848328 күн бұрын
It’s okay to do this. In my experience it is similar to having a system for colors like school buses are yellow, that has the same color as a school bus so it must be yellow. Eventually you lose said association and just know the color yellow. For real music just practice resinging the song and go slowly for identifying each interval, eventually you will get faster. I’m still new to this relatively speaking but I remember thinking I can identify intervals but not in songs, theres just more distracting content so you have to slow it down/isolate sounds until you can do it.

You mean certain numbers/scale degrees are harder than others? Or actually certain keys as in different tonics are harder than others?
@strangerting78183 ай бұрын
@@maxkonyiI mean different tonics. Another issue I have is that sometimes I mistakenly think the relative interval of two notes is the answer. Say the first one is a 2 and the following one is also a 2 but an octave above, I may think the second note is a 1 instead of 2. (Maybe I did too much relative pitch exercise in the past 😅) Looking forward to the release of the app btw. I’ve been practising with this video every day
@maxkonyi3 ай бұрын
@@strangerting7818 Yeah I know what you mean... there are all sorts of difficulties that arise in this stuff. Persitence and patience will sort them out...for the most part. Personally, I don't have any more difficulty with one tonic over another unless my mind does not swap the feeling of tonic onto the new drone and instead hears it as a scale degree in the previous key.

So far I can't help but sing the "resolution" for most degrees (for example when I hear IV I sing IV and then V automatically. Or if I sing vii I sing I automatically)
@maxkonyiАй бұрын
That's not a bad thing. But it is nice to focus on the individual scale degree feeling exclusively as well, which is what this method is all about. It will take some time to get used to if you've been using resolutions a lot.

Man would be cool if you can have minor scale with the normal scale degree as well, from 6 to 6. Maybe in a video just like this except with chord progressions
@jms1016.03 ай бұрын
I guess if in the app you can keep the narration without flatted notes then just change the drone to enter a new mode, then that would be perfect.

Not sure what you mean exactly...
@jms1016.03 ай бұрын
@@maxkonyi Well if the drone were like a bass player that can play a new bass note, and cause 1234567 to all feel different. With being able to change the drone note and keep the same scale degrees, you can imitate exactly how a song with chord progressions work, and not have to have a new note 1 for every chord change.

@@user-zn2ze2cx1o The point is to become familiar with the feeling states of each note (degree) within a key. Each scale degree feels a particular way when you hear it and this is true in all keys. This exercise plays the degree for you, says which number it is, and then plays it again to confirm. The point is to connect the feeling of the scale degrees to the numbers so that when one occurs, the other comes to mind

@@user-zn2ze2cx1o Imagine this, you’re standing on the ground ... that’s the home/drone note (let’s say C). Now, you take a step to another spot, like F. How does it feel? This step, the "distance" between C and F, has a certain feeling...like traveling from home to school, let’s say 6 km. Now, let’s switch it up. Imagine a new home base/drone, like D. This time, you step to G. The feeling of this step... the distance from D to G ... is the same as the distance from C to F. It’s still “6 km.” The relationship between the two notes (home and the next destination) stays the same, even if the home changes. This exercise is all about listening to that relationship ... the feeling of the distance ...no matter where you start. 1. The drone (home note) plays to set your ground or starting point. 2. A new note is played every time (your next destination). 3. You focus on the feeling of the step, or the “distance,” between home and that note. 4. Max is also describing the note to you, “This is the 4th” (or whatever scale degree/destination), and you connect the sound and the feeling of that relationship. Over time, you’ll recognize these distances (relationships) no matter where “home” is. It’s like knowing that traveling 6 km always feels the same, whether it’s from school to home or office to the hospital, the 6 km always feels the same. Your job is to hear and feeling these distances in music.

I have heard a tip for this type of functional ear training which is to try to sing the resolution from the note we hear to the tonic, but this tip seems somewhat at odds w.r.t. what you recommend of just sitting with the feeling. It also doesn't feel like training automatic recognition as it takes some work, almost like summing out a multiplication table exercise instead of memorizing the multiplication tables. Do you think it's good to try to sing the resolution to identify the note? And do you think this is at odds with what you mean by "sitting with the feeling"? Thank you so much for these videos!
@maxkonyiКүн бұрын
From my perspective, resolutions can be helpful in situations where you are confused but, as you say, they are too slow for real time use. Feeling-states, with practice, become immediate, no thinking. That being said, sometimes I get confused and need to resolutions or other tricks to orient myself again.
