I just don't understand why its necessary to speak English in a private conversation that happens to be in public, like do you wanna eavesdrop that bad
@crappyaccount
@crappyaccount 5 жыл бұрын
It's mostly because people are afraid you might be speaking ill of them behind their back. They think you switch languages so they can't understand your insults. I'm not saying it's right but it's the way people are. Its similar to how if one were to walk into a room full of strangers and a bunch of people began laughing next to you, you might wonder if they're laughing at you.

Now would you prefer speaking the same language as the other people an being part of one huge society or speaking your own language but having many societies which are drifting apart further and further until some societies cant even communicate with each other. I mean it s not a huge problem to speak to your family or friends in your language but you should definetley speak the language that is spoken by most people in your, too.

Abdullah Habib I don’t think most people disagree with that. Maybe not mandatory, because things are more complicated than that, but I agree it’s disrespectful and close-minded to live in a place for years and not learn the language. That said, the issue arises (for most) when people demand others speak English at all times, even when they’re just talking to each other. There’s no need for that, no reason why someone should forget their native language or only use it in public as if different cultures were a taboo and something to be kept secret in order to avoid disrespecting locals.

@@farel-168 I get that you're trying to make a point and all but I hope you know that a lot of us are more open to foreign languages than you presume. Many us, like others, try our best to learn at least the essentials of another countries language. Though, like you were saying there are people who go to countries without learning ANY of a language. Where you went wrong in all of this was when you assumed that only so called "white ignorants" Do this which by a long shot is not true in the slightest. Not learning a countries language is quite troubling when you go to visit another country, but it doesn't make it impossible for someone to communicate with the residents of that country, as there is a likely chance that at least one person there is able to speak some of your language. More english speaking people might not learn a different language because english is one of the most abroad languages out there. Along with Spanish!!!

U all speak english in the UK, US, Australia etc. but there are just different types of dialects and accents. I dont think you can consider these different languages because the mutual intelligibility is so high between these that u just simply cannot. My parents have heavy accents and it makes me so mad when people yell at them to speak English. It is so rude and condescending to say that to an immigrant and it makes me feel guilty because they only moved to America so that I could have a better childhood. Just yesterday I had to cuss a man out at the farmers market for being so rude to my parents who were just speaking quietly in mandarin. I was taught three languages aside from English so I always have some fun with people who tell my mom to "speak English". It confuses the hell out of them when you keep switching the languages up. They always assume that this 14-year-old child isn't fluent just because her parents aren't. Honey, I can tell you to mind your own business any day in any of the four languages I speak.

ramywiles go off fam! As a native English speaker, I know how stupid this language is with all its exceptions and horrible grammars and spellings. Learning how everyone else speaks is the hardest part for me when it comes to learning Spanish. They speak so fast and don’t always use correct grammar, so that makes everything hard. I know it is that way with any language, but imagine how difficult it is for English learners. Personally, I always mentally congratulate someone whose learns English not as a first language. I have a problem with people getting frustrated with me when I don’t understand their language that they insist on speaking to me with. That is what pisses me off. I have never said “speak English” and never will. But the thing that stands out in my mind is when this Hispanic woman was screaming at me when in a drive thru because I could not understand her. For those who don’t know Tagalog and Spanish have very similar words, I can usually understand about 50% of what someone speaking Spanish is saying. You can’t expect someone in a predominantly English speaking country (in the south) to completely understand you. Sorry. I try my best but can’t be perfect.
