I think the Latina woman agreeing with the mum that she should speak Spanish shows she knows how difficult the immigrant experience is. She just wants the little girl to have an easier life (even if that will affect her identity). It's easy for a white person to say "just be yourself and speak Spanish", but as an Asian who moved to the USA myself, it's really not that simple.

I get what you're trying to say but problems arise when people stop sticking up for one another. Even if you try and justify it by saying "it was hard for me, so it will be hard for you". Maybe it wouldn't be that hard if people like you stopped stepping back and took a step forward to defend others in the same situation.

I'm latina. I was born in Cuba and moved to Canada when I was 9. I had a stepfather just like that woman. He forbid us (Mom, sister, me) from speaking Spanish in his house even though my sister and I didn't know how to speak English yet. If we ever spoke Spanish, he would get violent. He was abusive, and did a lot more things than that, but stripping us of our heritage and culture was one of the worst things he did in my eyes. I don't know how to fluently speak my own mother tongue now. When I go back to Cuba to visit, it's hard for me to communicate with my own family. I'm seen as an outsider here in Canada because I'm latina, but now I'm an outsider in my own birth country too. It's abuse what this woman is doing, and it's racist af. It might be on a different level from what I experienced but even if she's doing it "from love" instead of wanting to isolate and control the little girl like my stepfather attempted to do to us, she's still hurting the girl and people need to speak up when they see something like that go down. Especially so in the US because they don't even have an official language like here in Canada, so everyone insisting that people speak English and ONLY English are ignorant on more than one front. Look, I get where you're coming from. Yes, it's important to speak the language of the country you choose to live in and to assimilate with the culture there as well. But trying to erase someone's identity, especially a child's, is wrong and abhorrent. It causes damage, it leads to the devaluation and "othering" of different cultures, which in turn leads to prejudice and the propagation of hate. It is not okay, and I'm so proud of people who spoke up to defend that little girl.

I experienced this working at Starbucks, when I noticed the young girl speaking with me had a Russian accent and I began to speak Russian with her. As she started responding, her "adopting" father interrupted with "She's from Russia but she's American now." (Clearly implying he didn't want us speaking Russian). I felt so bad for the girl because I could clearly tell her level of Russian conversation was stuck at the level of a 10-11 year old even though she was at least 16. She clearly needed to practice and speak with other Russian speakers and doesn't get that opportunity. Still think about her from time to time...

I work with English language learners in the classroom. They always revert back to their old language when trying to explain something because that’s the only way they understand. It’s hard learning a new language, and difficult when transitioning into a new culture. It’s a process and a journey for them. This is not the way we go about teaching our kids. We need kindness and a whole lot of patience.

@MegaGamerboy112
@MegaGamerboy112 6 жыл бұрын
Cosmin Costea, Because you obviously can’t understand simple things, here is a terribly typed argumentative essay that will hopefully explain why I think my claim is correct, On the show, ‘What would you do?’ By ABC, there is an episode about a young girl who speaks Spanish and her mother doesn’t agree with it, and claims it is America, so she should speak “American”. There is also a person on social media that agrees with this person. My personal opinion is that anybody should be allowed to speak any language, but should still know English because there is no official language in USA, Nobody should be forced to do anything that has nothing to do with them, They may speak it a lot more often in their home lives, and they may not be fluent in English. While some people tend to think that everybody should speak English in America, some people just don’t know the language fully, so they can’t speak full English. For example, I have Family that is not fluent in English and speaks mostly Spanish. People may also claim that just because English is spoken by most in the US, it should be the only language spoken. This statement is incorrect because there is no official language in America, so people have the right to speak any language. Just as some people speak mostly English around their family, others speak foreign languages around their family, and that is what their used to. Changing that just because of a new geographical location and the label for that location is just unethical. Finally, ITS NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS WHAT LANGUAGE OTHERS SPEAK. In conclusion, I’m right, you’re wrong. Why do you feel the need to write a hate comment under somebody else’s comment? Do you have nothing better to do? Do you feel the need to drag others down to the bottom of the bottomless abyss that your mind lives in? Does it satisfy you to know that you’re saying something most people do not agree with on the fact that it is made out of prejudice and racism and not facts, evidence, and personal experience? Do you not get the idea that if you don’t agree with something, you might not have to start an unnecessary argument that makes you look bad? That’s all I wanted to say, Good Night! P.S. I love being so passive aggressive!
@yikesman6464
@yikesman6464 6 жыл бұрын
Cosmin Costea It also means the government can’t censor or prevent anyone from speaking their opinion or their ideas unless it’s illegal and if I do recall speaking another language is not illegal. So therefore, people can speak their opinions in any language they wish. It’s helpful to speak english and just because a country doesn’t speak english doesn’t not make it a “shithole”. It’s divided not majority is against. Try again.
