+Punk zombie That what Black Metal is about, creating an atmosphere, thats why they generally dont use solos. Ive read in an Interview with Varg Vikernes, the guy behind Burzum that each song is supposed to be/work like a spell. by creating this distorting and yet mesmerizing atmosphere they did exactly that. Songs like "Dunkelheit" from Burzums Album Filosofem "will soothe you by force", at least thats how i feel when listening to it, there is now way one wont calm down if he really engages the music.
@brutalbob8429 жыл бұрын
Fischi Sounds about right. Most of the time when I listen to any kind of metal I ignore almost everything else thats going on at the moment and only focus on the music. When I listen to black metal it really feels like im in another place, like a frozen mounton top of in the middle of the woods.

I thought about this quite a lot, but never found such great words for it as you have. I would say it also linked to another important about black metal. The great thing is that, especially on this album, the lyrics often deal mainly with descriptions of majestic landscapes. In a way it's odd to capture the awe that such unresponsive landscapes impose on us in such heavy and thundering music - you would expect something more like dark ambient. But taking your comment into account, perhaps we can say that black metal somehow captures that ambience in the 'sheer saturation'. The music, as it were, is so full of speed and noise, that it actually refers to a sense of silence - the silence of a Scandinavian forest covered in snow.
@vyl67818 жыл бұрын
that is awesome . I never thought about that.
@avsky8377 жыл бұрын
I'm sure there's a subgenre of everything, but 'ambient black metal' to me sounds beyond redundant. So much about black metal is about the atmosphere already that having it purely instrumental would get exceedingly boring.anyway nice try at being tough.

Undoubtedly one of the best Black Metal album recorded. A complete masterpiece, from the beggining 'til the last song. Whoever dislikes this band must stay far away from Black metal, because this people have NO idea of what truly is Black Metal about.
@jlstuphph9 жыл бұрын
NeroHLVT Interesting enough if one bothered reading Varg Vikernes' interpretation of BM. He said that the primal idea of BM is for the artists to have their own interpretation of what the music is all about. It was originally never thought to be a closed format about doings things in a certain way. Originally it was a backlash against death metal which had its sound cookie-cuttered for semi-commercial purposes. Black metal was supposed to go against that view but then the late 90's happened. And we are now stuck with corpse paint and Satan. So much for that idea.
@Ein_krieger9 жыл бұрын
JayElStuf futSlEyaJ I understand what you say, and I don't disagree of Varg's point of view. I really believe that, on Black Metal, musicians must free their spirit and let it flows through imagination and creativity, but this condition of free and creative spirit that the musician reaches also brings him to a kind of "point of no return", or, in other words, once awakened, he is no longer the same he used to be. The old chains, which ones he used to be arrested, are now broken and left behind, and with that I mean all the kind of moral, dogmas and ideologies that stuck the spirit and preclude it from evolve. So, I may not have been very clear on my first comment, but when I say that Black Metal is a limited kind of music and ideology, that is what I actually mean. I hope you can understand me and forgive me for my bad english, man. Hugs!

@@johansld4506 Do what they all do----put down anything on tape,.....go back to it later. Jeff Hanneman of Slayer once said he didn't play guitar for 7 or 8 months at all after a tour; he just watched TV [before he died]. Then fiddles around, then goes to his basement, plays riffs over and over, records them, leaves them, goes back to them. Then tries it out with the band. If it works, they make the riffs into a song. Kerry King said some riffs were around for 15 years! before they could work them into the overall sound of the album they were making. There's no magic, just don't give up, just stop for a while. Go back. Hit record. Remember, Fenriz said, they were so impressed with Bathory, they just kinda made Darkthrone into their own Bathory---this is after listening to Bathory for 8 years [84 to 92]. Black Metal cares nothing on time---when it happens, it happens.

I feel like it's actually insane how good this album is, particularly when you turn the sound up enough to notice the subtleties in the drums (something people should do when listening to metal imo). Songwriting is superb in that each riff and rhythmic change seems to flow into another, a style I greatly enjoy. I think I physically exclaimed "wow" after the slow part of "Storming through Red Clouds" (about 18:04) - I thought "wouldn't it be great if they just restated an earlier portion exactly here" and then it happened right after lol. Shame bands don't make stuff like this and Altars of Madness anymore, it seems.

I can see why some see this as their best release. On first listen I found this a bit too discordant and chaotic compared to Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and the later albums, but once you start to notice the subtle melodies in amongst all the discordance riffing it becomes quite a unique and thrilling listening experience. It has that atmospheric occult vibe of their debut, but much more sinister, aggressive and relentless.

I got heaps into black metal about 6/7 years ago, loved malsaint, xenophobia, darkthrone, but never really gave immortal a proper listen until now, i knew of them just never bothered to listen to much of their stuff. i must say im quite impressed
