Swamiji, I have a question, If I am a non dual practitioner and understand that everything is a part of brahman, whether it is good or bad, why no gifts, celibacy should be adopted to be a yogi? By denying something am I not giving my mind and thoughts to it? Do you mean these practices are only for yogis who want to be sanyasi? Can I not be a yogi amid my samsara? ...I am your silent disciple/student and love your talks and wisdom.
@ImmortalBliss Жыл бұрын
Namaste. All these practices are geared towards stabilizing the mind. All these understanding of non-duality is just an intellectual conviction unless your body, especially nerves, prana flowing through it, follows what your conviction is. That happens only by strict practice unless one is of exceptionally pure mind like that of Sri Ramakrishna whose convictions were immediately followed by the nerves in terms of adverse reaction to doing something opposing that conviction (for eg: touching metal would physically distort his hand). Brahmacharya is not denial of something but refusing to seek nervous pleasures by the union of physical bodies. Those in Samsara also should restrict that act only for procreation and not for seeking pleasure. Except for food and essential requirements without which one would find it difficult to survive in a body, one should do away with every other need for fulfillment in the senses. Only then can the mind, which has a natural tendency to look outward, be turned inward and realise its true nature as the nondual ever perfect existence knowledge bliss absolute. You may think seeking pleasure is natural but then nature is not here to liberate you. As Swami Vivekananda says, none has realised the truth by allowing nature to dictate your life. Hope this clarifies. With best wishes, Swami Jnanishananda

Truth is that anyone can become a yogi if they destroy the lust and greed for sensual pleasures and material comforts. Of the 2, power of desire to experience sexual pleasure is almost impossible for any man or woman to control. If that alone were so easy to control, then world population won't keep increasing beyond 8 Billion and higher consciousness will ensure humans stop "producing" children for the sake of their pleasures and start "creating" children with superior DNA for the sake of service to the creators of this universe. If you read content of many sages and saints on brahmacharya, you'll find how this one craving is unbeatable and not so easy to conquer. This is why yogis are born and live a specific way of life till the end. Humans are animals and need food and sex no matter how much their brain has evolved. This lack of self control is the reason for 100% of all world problems today. If all couples only ever had sex for procreation and never to experience cheap and selfish pleasure, then humanity would have jumped to next level species already. But, humans are devolving coz of their attachment to lustful and greedy desires. Even if a perfect couple existed and wanted to create a perfect child, the infinite karma from rest of 8 Billion humans will end up as a curse and not as a blessing to that child. This is the irony of aiming to be spiritually perfect in Kali Yuga.

I very much appreciate what he says about accepting gifts. This said, the rules apply to the ego mind. There is never a problem accepting from being or wholeness. Accepting a compliment from wholeness is not the same as needing a compliment and feeling flattered and which exposes you to manipulation. But if you accept from freedom, it is a whole different matter. In fact, even refusing a compliment could be the work of the ego mind as in false modesty. There are no rules for the enlightened one, the Jnani.

Accepting gifts may also be good, if that means paying a karmic debt, for the person offering the gift. Giving gifts also works the same way. No absolutes.

Same with Ahimsa or non-violence. Hindu historical texts are full of examples of wars, battles and conquests to convey punchlines. Importantly these conflicts are always fought out of duty to protect a higher cause, the outcome of which is for the greater benefit. In Hinduism, it's OK to be violent for the right reasons. One could argue, the duties are for the Kshatriya or warrior class and not for a Yogi and I can accept that. But not completely as the yogi could encounter a situation where he is required to go against Ahimsa. In such case he has not forsaken yogihood - he has temporarily put it aside for the call of the hour.

He is not clear, when he says not accepting gifts it’s meant for people who are living like yogis. The correct interpretation IMHO for general people is giving when you can without hoping to get anything in return. It sounds simple when said but in true absolute practice it is extremely hard. E.g. Someone one random day when to hospital and told doctor that he wants to donate one of his kidneys, he has no idea who is going to get it. It’s a gift to someone yes but it apparently comes with feeling of non possessiveness, giving but not expecting anything in return

People in the west do not understand when you ask them not to give you any gifts, not even small ones. They just want to satisfy their need to give you a gift. So, I tend to quietly pass on the gifts that are given to me, neither offending the giver by openly refusing the gift, nor making anyone else feel obliged towards me as most of the time they won't know who it is from or I will let them know that I am only passing it on because I feel they have better use for it. That way I don't have to be totally antisocial and people can do what they feel they need to do.

And, to humbly say, I feel, I have started learning a few things... But Swamiji, I have a question here that came to my mind while watching this very video, and, it goes like this: While explaining the ideas of Non-violence and Ahimsa, you cited two examples; the first of the Japanese Guru , and, the second of Swami Viekananda. I felt that these two views on the same subject are very opposed. Swamiji, my doubt is; Is there a difference in the essence of these two words, or you have used them synonymously? If not, then what is the exact difference between these two words? Swami Vivekananda's view appeals to me. I have formed this view, after reading 'Gita Rahasya' by the Great intellectual and philosopher, 'Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak'... Swamiji, do clear this doubt, if you find any worth in it...

Namaste. If you are referring to the Martial arts Guru, then it is not opposed to Swamiji’s view that the strong need not oppose or resist the weak. I have to disagree about there being less violence today than in previous centuries. We may have less violence percentagewise with regard to the population, but it ios less pgysical violence. But violence in thought and words is more today than in previous times. Previously physical violence acted as a release of mental and verbal violence But today with the all the restrictive laws being put in place the level of frustration is more and when violence does erupt it takes on a very evil and twisted form. We are definitely living in more violent times
