I asked my brother to buy me Ellipse for my birthday... that must have been 2010. I listened to all the songs on that. They became the soundtrack of my early love and loss... Its a dark, overcast day today and for some reason I absolutely had to listen to this song. I pulled it up on KZbin and put on my headphones... Its just as beautiful as I remember it. It takes me back to the nights I would stay back at work and take the metro home. Its cold and empty. Funny how music brings back memories and emotions. Thank you, Immi for all the music you gave us. Love from Dubai.

There are certain songs in life that just connect and become part of you. Ones that you would play for someone if they asked “tell me about yourself”. This is one of those, along with other greats like Thickets by Patrick Wolf, and Glorious by MUSE. This song has been part of me ever since it was released. And the cinematography really seals it for me (as an artist and backpacker, mountaineer).

“I just can’t find the strength to HAUL you up and keep you taut”. The lyrical metaphor is about “canvas”, not “a canvas”, as in a sail, that you “pull up” or “haul up” to keep it taut. The video is gorgeous but the imagery misdirects. The lyrics are about sail canvas, not a paint canvas.

Fun fact: Canvas is latin for cannabis, all canvas and most things made before the 1930's were made out of hemp. Not that it has anything to do with Imogen besides the song title but i don't think many people know what canvas actually is. So in a way, pot not only creatively inspired a lot of art throughout history, but also made the best material to put the art on.

I remember listening to this song while I sat outside in single-digit temps and heavy lake-effect snow ( I lived in Buford,GA a few hundred feet from Lake Lanier) and I was going through a *bad*/abusive relationship at the time. The whole experience of meditating and this song's depth (in music and lyrics) and how much it touched my soul brought me back to my center-place and helped me grip on to a normal reality again, away from him ; I might even say it was a damn-near religious experience. I suppose I'm back here to relive that experience and find my center again...I definitely need it more than ever now.
