This video comment section is proof that tons of people don’t know what auto tune is or what it does, and even more people don’t know what a vocoder is or what it does, and still MORE people don’t realize how talented this woman is for being able to perform this song live with the effects she used in the studio and have it sound like this. Massive props to Imogen Heap she is an incredible talent.

To be fair, all of the settings & configurations of the various effects chains and VSTs (virtual instruments) were created, perfected and saved in files on her laptop. She isn't manipulating/altering those during the performance. And people have been accompanying themselves with complex musical instruments for centuries, and with more simple instruments for eons... In fact, it is believed that spoken language is predated by singing in humans. I'm not attempting to imply that she less talented/amazing than you opine. However, what she's doing (on the level of the physical tasks/actions she is executing) in those performance is not at all uncommon, rate, unusual or exceptional although it does show an advanced level of skill (the result of practice/repetition) and talent (natural abilities which may be further developed).

@JC-yy8iv 7 ай бұрын
@@EFNBrktt that’s what I was going to say! Caroline is one of my favorite contemporary artists, and Imogen’s influence on her singing is VERY apparent, in the best way. Caroline uses a very similar larynx position and nasal resonance to get that Imogen-ish tone, but despite the clear influence, her voice is also very much her own. Caroline has that insanely clean register flip (the move that defines yodeling) that she uses almost constantly, creating note transitions that sound autotuned or cut-and-pasted but are achieved completely with her natural instrument. I love them both so much, they’re some of the most talented, innovative, and creative musicians of our lifetime. I first got into Imogen because someone put “Rake It In” on a mixtape, and when I found her other music I was initially a little put off because back then I had a prejudice against technology in music. But over time I came to appreciate her immense talent (and get over my dumb genre biases) And similarly, when I first heard “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” I kind of wrote Caroline off as bubblegum pop, but I came to love the song and then “Desire” came out and I was just so blown away. I would love to hear them work together someday.

I have a tc helicon and it 100% has auto tune and vocoder and harmonizing function. She’s using the vocoder here. If she was using the harmonize function there’d be no need for the piano playing. Also the really dissonant harmonies she does wouldn’t work since they’re not in a simple chord which is what the harmonize function does.

She actually has a great voice, it's just really hard to sing perfectly in tune with a vocoder since it's not relative to her voice. The keys she's pressing down on the keyboard manipulate the sound of her voice into the corresponding notes, so before she's singing anything in the mic she has to know what exact frequency to sing at. That's pretty hard. Kudos!

@decafmclatte
@decafmclatte 8 жыл бұрын
No, you need to understand what autotune is. Let me get this right; Are you saying that autotune isn't autotune if the artist is a talented singer? That using autotune isn't using autotune if their voice at the forefront of the effect? If these questions sound stupid it's because they are.
@Luckyjasondrum

Both autotune and vocorders are used with a keyboard but I see your point Jason Parker. Yet the difference between effects made is negligible in this case. One is no more shameful than the other.
@Luckyjasondrum
@Luckyjasondrum 8 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. In this case, knowing her sensibilities as an artist, a desired effect was warranted. If there were no natural voice layer then, yes, it would be shameful. Have you seen the performance with her and the vocal group, Mahogany? It's enchanting. Zero vocal assistance.
@decafmclatte

I can respect that very much and in no way do I believe this song or her talent is cheapened by the use of synth effects. My only intention is to dispel the belief that autotune makes the artist. It literally is auto tuned ... It’s a TC Helicon voice live 2 or something similiar , which can be set to auto tune your voice to a fixed scale (eg C Major) or to add harmony parts at a fixed interval e.g a major third above ... Or to be triggered by midi as is the case here ... Her lead vocal parts are dry (untuned), and all the harmonies are autotuned to what she’s playing on the keyboard ... it’s not a vocoder ... A vocoder uses one signal to modulate another , e.g using a vocal part to modulate a piano part (analog) think 1970s ELO ... This effect is very digital , could not have been done in the 1970’s ... Whatever patch is loaded on the keyboard is irrelevant , could be strings , could be piano , could be banjo , it’s irrelevant ... the keyboard is silent and just outputting midi signal to literally auto tune her voice

I have to confess that I keep playing the "Mmm.. whatchya say" part over and over. Granted the whole song is beautiful and you can't truly appreciate Imogen's talent without listening to the whole thing. But that part is particularly hypnotic.

It's amazing that she can sing live and still sound like the recording. She's incredible. And Jason DeRulo took this art and ripped it apart. Hers came first.

the in between is fascinating...how deliberate each note is... when she releases the word "SEEK" 2:35... her breathing between phrases... her facial expressions says so much about what she is singing... the notes that are so soft they gently whisper... beautiful! listening to this with good quality headphones is highly recommended.

D.J. Max said to be Akai Decabuddy harmonizer triggering notes to her voice + any vocoder can do the rest. Akai has one too. Now the Electro-Harmonix Voice Box, that's the beast. Looking for a software version now.

Heap has been reluctant to say exactly what inspired this song, but most of what she's said indicates that she wrote this song about the separation of her parents when she was 12 and her father finding a new wife. "Crop Circles in the carpet" means the furniture has been moved out and all that is left are crop circle imprints. "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before" means photos have been taken down. All signs that someone is moving out of the home. Heap has called the images "a collection of childhood memories." Source: www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=8079

Some have mentioned that this isn't a flawless performance, and while I kind of agree, a couple of notes in her high register were only slightly pitchy, it really doesn't matter. Imogen is a gifted songwriter. She speaks in metaphor and translates emotions that we all feel sometimes into a form that, at least for me, gives me hope that us as a society aren't totally hopeless. We need more like you, Imogen. I feel especially in a lot of modern forms of music that we've brutalized creativity for

Correction: she does not use an auto tune. She's harmonizing with a keyboard synthesizer and using a vocoder for the distortion effects

Woof-woof! Remember when a strolling minstrel used to simultaneously play a guitar, blow a harmonica, bang a drum and sing a song? Well, Imogen Heap is one of those 21st century artists who can take a keyboard, her voice and a computer and pull together amazing sound. Here, she does it live and, I must say (in all groundhog-like humility), her combination is awe-striking. Give your self a treat, enlarge the youtube screen, hit 'play' and permit yourself to be mentally massaged

Omg I first heard this song in 2005 when I was in high school. I loved it then and still do but it’s crazy being older listening to it now and it meaning something completely different to me than it did in high school. Unbelievably beautiful voice, this is what I would go to a show to see… this is talent.
